Hi Alec. Coolant lines can get plugged up, so I'd start there. If the coolant isn't used often it tends to congeal. Try blowing some air through the line to blow out any globs. You may have to disassemble the line into sections and run a stiff wire though it if they've solidified.
@AbzRaz
@AbzRaz 3 жыл бұрын
There's a tap ontop of that coolant pipe too. The knurled knob, make sure that's open. If not most likely the switch has stopped working. Common for switches to play up on these types of lathes

Those facing cutters are called shell mills and I'd be extremely careful using any grinding attachments because it's hard to keep the grit form getting into places it shouldn't be. The rotary tables for the vices also take away from the ridgeability of the vice. Hope you have a strap wrench to use on the keyless chuck because at some point you will have a drill get too tight to remove by hand. 45 years as a Bridgeport machinist.

Thanks for the vid. I'm really enjoying your machine shop is growing up. The lathe runs fantastic, but the Bridgeport needs some work. I assume that the tapered spindle tooling have a rust pitting, so they need a little help of some anti-rust solution. Speaking about the grinding attachment on the mill - it can be a good idea, but only with a way covers installed, so dust and chips won't damage the ways any further.

Triangular trusses are great because every link in the structure is a two force member, so each structural member experiences no bending force, which keeps everything nice and rigid. Definitely a good choice of structure if weight is a primary concern for the application.

Hello Alec, nice to see your UK shop coming back in working order! I just came from a video of Adam Savage's one day builds where he used a collet and collet holder to mill some soft material, and it made me think of all the times you've had to fidget with something to make it stay in the mill vice. Not sure how it all works, but I just wanted to say something here in case you ever needed the information.

Alec - Cool to see you getting the shop set up. One small correction on the type of flaking you have on the ways of your Bridgeport mill. These are not scraping marks from precision scraping of the ways to ensure flatness. Those types of marks are smaller and if you look at some of the precision scraping videos on KZbin, you will see the difference. I believe Bridgeport only did machining and grinding of the way surfaces followed by an oil retention hand scrape flaking to help with retaining oil on the ways. You can tell this by the "hook" shape of the scraping mark.

Nice to see you getting back into it all Alec. A workshop is not a proper workshop without having coolant go everywhere. Have you tried turning on the stop tap on your coolant arm. If it's not that then I would say it could be blocked with old chips or the impeller may be stuffed. They are the obvious fixes on a lathe.

That grinding disc reminds me of a time that i had to machine some very hard metal in my lathe and didn't have tungsten tools at the time , what i needed was in fact a tool post grinder and not having one i improvised, i made a fitting so that i could attach my angle grinder to the tool post and voila, tool post grinder, worked a treat and cut so smooth, still use when needed too.

Hi Alec and the rest of the team. I am not a blacksmith myself or have a workspace, but I enjoy seeing how these materials are transformed into concrete beautiful objects, a real pleasure to see. And notice that seeing this awakens something for me to think out and build something for myself. So thank you for feeding this desire. Maybe a tip or something to enjoy, I am now listening to this song "Mike Vass - Cold Iron" and could have been taken straight from one of these movies. Thanks, and with a smile, Marien

When you get the coolant working on the lathe I'd suggest making a shield to cover the jaws of the chuck as they like slinging the coolant everywhere. Learned that one the hard way.

Trusses and frames are actually really interesting. I have a textbook I could recommend if you wanted a resource to refer to or read about how they work, it’s actually pretty simple. A little bit of physics, and I mean just a hair, and you can calculate the force on any joint in a truss and see if what you’re going to build will stand up to an intended load

Finally a sponsor I can benefit from! Time to see if I can find something I like more than these glasses! Btw, do most of the bigger machinists and blacksmiths on here know each other?

Keep some cat litter to hand, to quickly contain liquid spills that you don’t want going everywhere. Workshop is looking great!

Check the rotation direction of your coolant pump. It may be running backwards and they are usually full of dirt and swarf as well. This stops them pumping too.

Love the new design for the grinder stand. My question is why not put the legs and tack them to the inside of the top instead on below on the corners?

Thank god you're back to Logi-meters and make-sense-heits ! 😄 But it would be nice if you could display "alternative" mesurements on screen for our friends across the pound.

Some of those old coolant pumps loose prime. I use too take an air nozzle and blow across the tip of your coolant hose. It will pull the coolant through the hose and prime the pump.
