I still have the album. Beautiful Day sound was special. Sad about David's loss. I heard back then Burt Bacharach had a son in the band. Back then this type of music, Hard Rock was played on FM radio stations. Main street music was on the AM radio dial.

It wasn't called psychedelic rock for nothing and White Bird was a fairly big hit at the time.

I was not living in the 60's but I have a great appreciation for this type of music. I would consider it psychedelic in style ala hippy San Fran. I heard White Bird for the first time on some university radio station a few years back and just loved it I'm glad you had the chance to experience it.

After high school in the early 70s, I took time to hitch around America, doing the hippie tour, if you will. On my first oasis, at my first hippie house, where I took respite, this album and song was playing, and I sensed that all was well, and all would be well. It was, in some way, a main part of the soundtrack at the beginning my personal hero's journey, which would lead me to Mr. Campbell and other great teachers. This may also be a part of yours. Surely.

Its been a while since I've checked in with you John but when I saw this vid of you doing the full album you know I had to stop in. I love, love LOVE this album and my favorite songs are Hot Summers Day and Girl with no eyes but all of them are just magical. I'm glad you give this one a spin and know you'll just love it as a reminder where this album came from and what time, for some of the mashes, you need to bring lucy in the sky with diamonds...uh wink wink to fully experience this band.

Me thinks this is one o' the greatest albums-beginnin' to end-o' all time. It was my soundtrack to 1969. I was at a friend's birthday party many years ago when the musical concept was for everyone to pick a single album side to play. I chose side 2 o' It's A Beautiful Day which everyone loved hearin'. They were surprised I chose side 2 since White Bird was the hit but side 2 is fantastic! Nice to see yer reaction now.

They were regulars at Winterland and the Filmore, and even better, at the Frost Ampitheater at Stanford University. Frost was entirely surrounded by tall trees and once inside you had no feeling of being near a city. The shows were epic, Santana, War, Beautiful Day, Sons of Champlin, Cold Blood, Tower of Power, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Elvin Bishop...good times;)

I used to visit my grandparents on Capitol Hill in Seattle not long before this came out, and they lived a couple of blocks away from Volunteer Park, near the Victorian home this guy was talking about where the song was written. My cousin and I had some of the best times of our lives playing in that park. And the Victorian mansions in that part of town are still there, and still incredible! A few years later my family moved to Hawaii, and interestingly, I think the band also had connections to the Islands.

One of the best albums associated with 1960s San Francisco music scene, along with Moby Grape's first albums. IABD's second album is a step down, but still has some great songs and music. Their first album is close to perfection. When this album came out, it was as marvelous as you are experiencing it now. There's something for everybody in there. And we were all haunted by "The Girl With No Eyes." Most parents didn't even listen to their kids' music, so they wouldn't have had much to say about it.

I still have it too! A very cerebral album, not really for parties! I would bet 99% of the people who have heard of this album never got past White Bird.
@guyobhf62739 ай бұрын
I've always loved this album. I'm 72 and I only have one friend of my vintage who even remembers the band. He has White Bird as his ring tone when I call him. Here is an Easter Egg for you in the form of a bit of trivia about the band - or more accurately, their fate. At the beginning of this reaction you mentioned they had a connection with Santana. Leading up to Woodstock, the promoters thought they needed one more band to fill out the bill. They reached out to a band manager in San Francisco for another band. He had two in mind. It's a Beautiful Day and Santana. The promoter watched/listened to both bands and couldn't decide between them. So, they flipped a coin and Santana was chosen. Maybe that chance event was prophetic in that Santana is still an active band over 50 years later.

Wasted Union Blues is about sex, drugs and rock and roll;) Union is another word for intercourse,,. "wasted" is another word for being high, and while getting high can enhance the experience, getting too high or for too long can get you to the point where you're "so high I don't know if I can make it" (making it is another euphemism for sex). The instrumental climax at the end of the song is, of course, the climax;) There was little connection between we hippies of the day and our parents...we couldn't do what we were obviously doing with their approval and so of course we hid it as long as we could and then for the most part endured the rupture when they found out. I moved out at 18, a rented house with a couple of friends and within a year or two we had scattered to the country, to other states, to other countries, to "cool" places where we could exist more or less in the open.

I still have this album. It wasn't a big hit in the UK possibly due to lack of exposure but it has certainly stood the test of time. I remember reading a review and had to go out and buy it to see what it was all about. Strangely, their second album, 'Marrying Maidens', is completely different with almost a country vibe. I suspect their fan base, built off their first album, didn't take to the second and this may have led to their demise.

I haven't read the comments but one thing you haven't mentioned so far (no offense, this is just after the first transition) is the blending of each and every song into the next. There is no album I know of that compares with this in that way. Forget Side 2 of Abbey Road - not even close. These songs are not a collection of singles, they are each an important part of the whole. Enjoying watching you experience this album. One of my few all-time favorite albums - from 'back in the day'.
