During the 7ish years I worked as an assistant engineer at a commercial recording studio, I had the privilege of working alongside and learning from some of the greatest producers and engineers alive. I learned a ton from them, from how to mic up drums to how to compress and EQ a vocal and so much more. Yet one of the most important lessons I learned wasn't quite one I ever would have guessed. It came when I was assisting Joe Blaney, the producer and engineer behind bands such as the Ramones, Beastie Boys, Prince, and my absolute favorite band, The Clash. When he was telling me stories about working with The Clash, something started to click in my mind, something that would completely transform the way I approached every recording and every mix I've done since that day, something that made my mixes more impactful, emotional, and a whole lot less boring.
