In this episode, watch Marc Daniel Nelson break down his personal Pro Tools Template. Marc walks through his in-the-box chain all the way down to his analog chain. Marc has been asked about showing more depth about what his digital template looks like, and he is going to show us that, along with what his out of the box chain looks like. For his out of the box chain, he will be talking about the summing, the compression, the EQ, and the conversion, because even with the conversion it is going to make a big difference on the sound.
People talk a lot about why they designed their templates the way they did, and for Marc, is was about making it easy. He wanted to make it so that anyone who opens the session is able to navigate it and understand what is happening. This goes all the way down to labelling auxiliaries, sends, and more, and colour coding everything so that it is basically identical from song to song.
Marc will be demonstrating what in-the-box vs out-of-the-box sounds like on a rock song. He uses a song he just mixed that was Geoff Emerick's final project before he passed away. This song is “Aimee” by Lena Anderssen, produced by Geoff Emerick, and Niclas Johannesen.

Thank you all for the great words, feedback and emails. A little Disclaimer: I am reading a handful of comments stating that the ITB mix could in fact be better or that the OTB destroys the ITB mix. This video was put together to showcase what MY personal template and OUTBOARD chain does for me. I still mix ITB a lot and in fact can beat my analog mixes. It just depends on the style of music and what your end game is. There are so many things that come into play when mixing ITB vrs OTB. For me, I cant find anything plugin wise that gets me the certain values that I have in my hardware. But, I can say that my OTB when used right on the right content is way better. But not always is the case. The point in why I use a template isnt so everything goes through the same plugins, it is to get me a head start to be creative. So most of my time is not spent on setting up mixes and I can then focus on the creative side of mixing. Once its close, there is a whole new world to hyper focus on the small details. Its really fun!

This was a great vid. It’s come at a time I’m debating on weather to stay hybrid or go fully ITB. You can clearly hear in the examples here that the ITB sounds less defined and flatter than the OTB. The OTB example has real front to back/ left and right depth. That being said I think taking this into consideration when approaching a mix ITB, you can generally get most of the way to an OTB mix. I think part of what maybe makes Marks OTB sound great is his choice of gear and him himself. I’ve done many a mix ITB where I’ve beaten out other mixer to the job who’ve been using “quality” outboard. But nothing is a magic bullet.
@Skykingsound
@Skykingsound 3 жыл бұрын
@@tiekumark @producelikeapro here are my questions, was the OTB processing with tracks mixed in the box and recorded without outboard gear? Or was everything recorded with outboard and that was only a comparison of master bus ITB vs OTB? Id like to hear the difference of a track fully recorded ITB vs OTB including master bus processing. And then a comparison with hybrid.

I run my stereo bus through a pair of Heritage Audio 1073. They have a "line gain" knob that drives the transformer. I keep all the EQ bands off and just drive the transformers into my elysia compressor. I do this on literally every mix.

The difference between the Itb mix versus OTB summing whit SSL sigma and all analog compressors and EQ,s is huge. Daniel points out some of main differences between ITB summing and OTB analog summing and that,s wider Stereo and more depth in the sonic image. Thats something you can get with cheaper mixer or passive summing mixer like SM pro audio PM 8. A Very interesting video would be a compression between emulated analog summing ITB with Waves NLS / Slate digital virtual console collection and OTB summing with SSL Sigma.

Great video but I'd like to point out one thing. In my humble opinion, it's not the fact that he's using outboard analog gear in the mix bus that's making it sound so different from the ITB version. It looks like he's not doing a lot to his mix bus channel as one would do when mixing completely ITB, which makes sense since he's doing it with analog gear. That's fine, it's just a different way to go about it. Having mixed a lot of records in the box and a lot in a hybrid setup, I can definitely say now that you CAN make a mix sound just a great with plugins - the path, however, is quite different. I can see now that it's pointless to compare analog gear with their emulation plugin counterpart because everything will react differently. I find myself using two, three compressors on something whilst in the box and perhaps only the one when using a great analog compressor like a Neve 2254/E or an 1176. Another good example: a pair of 'real' distressors with the British mode engaged on a drum bus sound a certain way that it's difficult to replicate with plugins. You will, however, come very close by probably using small doses of several compressors in series. I'm done with the whole Analog VS Digital debate. Main advantage of analog? You go from A to B quite faster!

*Gigantic* difference between the two. It would be interesting to see how close you could get the ITB mix to that OTB version by AB'ing and mixing toward that goal. Surely there are things that can be done to open up the ITB mix fuller and wider if you aimed for that with the OTB version as your reference. If nothing can be done and this is as close as you can get, it would be a devastating blow to ITB, and the phrase "It's not the gear, it's how you use it" should never be used again. So I'd love to see that challenge met if possible.

Ohhh thanks alot man! I'd be really interested to see that DAC interface thing you where talking about possibly doing! As every DAC/interface has their own sound, I know it, and so does anyone worth a salt in this business. But many don't talk about that! And nowadays getting further along into this, that, along with the utilities of said interface...are more important in the long run than they used to be for me. Especially since I need to upgrade in the next few years, or sooner! So please do that DAC/Interface shootout, or whatever...! I can really hear the massive difference the OTB stuff makes on your tracks! It did the same for me working on an SSL9000J! Everything....was exactly the same, but I couldn't figure out why it sounded so much better at my work! Well it turns out(what I didn't realize when I was doing it at the time, being a somewhat noob to mixing on a desk, years ago) that the mix was going from the computer out through the 192 converters, through the desk, and back into the 192 into the computer! So just running it through the system was making it sound way bigger(without adding any FX, plugins or anything at all)and giving it a bigger soundstage, separating all the instruments, and also giving them depth of field as well! All by just running it through the SSL900J console! That's the ONLY difference! Oh and the bass was deeper and tighter, and the highs where more airy, and higher! All that by just running it through the desk! If that's what the Sigma does....by golly I want one! Otherwise I want a mini SSL900J like they made with that SSL Six mixer! Please SSL make one!

Wonderful video, and an amazing song/ mix. I listened to your journey with hardware and started to smile. Which Burl did you use and why did you make a move from using it? I've been eyeing the B2 and heard some amazing reviews. But then someone like you say that you swapped it out because things didn't translate correctly over genre's!!! That's a huge statement, and good for thought. I also noticed that you have the DW pres in your studio. Sooooo it looks like you have gone from having a ton of analog tone to a much cleaner recording and mixing experience. Do you miss having the weight of some of the tried and true analog gear or outboard pres like vintech, BAE, etc? Do you miss the tone that Burl adds, as well as, the weight of the tape emulations/effects on all your mixes? Please educate me!!! I love this video by the way.

Marc, Amazing Video, thanks for sharing your insights. I also feel there is a difference when out of the box. Maybe it's the 5 % and the feel you get when interacting with the gear, that gives you a greater feeling of engagement than a sterile mouse. I am hybrid, with my 2 bus or summed mix Analogue. I've never been able to match it in the box 100%. Do you ever look to clip your AD converters or is that an in the box process for you?

Wow... The difference OTB vs ITB. Well to answer your question. My everything is limited to the size of my wallet so not much outboard mastering gear on my rack. I have an Orban 424a stereo comp, but I use it for drum room mics going in, with de-essing, few KT76 and EQP-KT... you get what you can afford. I think most of the time it's down to using your ears, cheap is not always bad and expencive is not always great. It's how you apply those.

The OTB version sounds amazing compared to the ITB one but you have to consider that he has built the mix into the OTB chain and when you rely on a masterbus processing during mixing when you deactivate it at the end the mixing process will always sounds different.

This is golden, thank you. With your OTB i can clearly show the difference to someone else. Before i could only explain it as: ITB you are listening to the band from in front of them, everything may be perfect technically and sonically but it's still missing something extra. OTB is when you are still in front of the band listening, but you get closer and the music finally embraces you.

I have a question, I agree the OTB is so much better, but when you compared the 2, did you just turn off the analog chain (for the ITB mix) or apply extra stuff (ITB) to emulate that analog chain?

Analogue mix is so much better, its brighter, more depth, separation, 3D, dynamic, and most importantly it “Breaths” its “ Alive”, which is what ITB mixes often lack and sound claustrophobic and suffocating. I wonder, which of your Hardware pieces actually adds the most dramatic improvements, if there is any one or two pieces that really make a huge jump. Is it the JCF? The Sigma? Teiglar? API??? Sounds great👍

Thanks a lot for this great insight ! Would have loved to hear how you use the Tegeler Schwerkraft e.g. what you like about it. From the reviews i've seen, i found it not too exciting soundwise (the motorized knobs / plugin control seem awesome though). The reviews used it mostly on drums, had it acting as sort of a transient designer, but not much unlike the many available plugins...so i was surprised to see it in your master chain. However, thanks again and cheers from germany !

Thank you as always! great video. @marc daniel nelson Why would you put your Print AD as a Hardware Insert? Why not just output the Mix Bus to the JCF then come back into Pro Tools Digitally? Wouldn't you avoid double conversion this way by not using the Orion Hardware Insert to bring the JCF into play? If I understand your routing correctly it is: Orion - Sigma - Outboard - PRINT AD - DA - MON.

Here's one I don't get: when you've got all these plugins sitting there, ready to go on a bus for drums, lets say. Are these plugins engaged from the very beginning? Because my instinct would be to build a good sound from the sources and then add in these plugins as they become necessary? Otherwise, I would feel like I'm trying to EQ something that is getting compressed elsewhere? Thanks.
@friedrichvanzandt
@friedrichvanzandt 3 жыл бұрын
I think he just used it as a sound he likes to mix into. Like it’s the sound of his desk. The way you would always use a specific channel on your desk for, let’s say snare, because it’s sounds just a tiny bit better than on every other channel, because it has just a bit more high mids and a little more controlled lows than any other channel on your board.
@creeker90
@creeker90 3 жыл бұрын
I’d agree with Friedrich. In addition since he is so familiar which what plugin adds, he already has the sound in his head what it will be like when he engages certain things on the bus. So when he’s adjusting the snare he’s probably like "oh I think I want some more smack, but that’s probably what the distressor will do anyways".
@TomBelknapRoc
@TomBelknapRoc 3 жыл бұрын
@@creeker90 But Chris: that sounds like he's engaging the plugin AFTER he's already mixed, hypothetically, the drums pre-bus? Then click it on when you're ready. That's where I'm coming from, if you take my meaning? I would leave all the bus plugins off, level and expand the drum channels individually. Now they sound "good." Once that's done, time to punch in my bus compressors and my Pultec EQ, etc? But in the video it seems like at least some of those plugins are turned on by default. I know this is probably a bit pedantic, but it's those details we're all after here, right? Anyways, thanks to both of you for the discussion!

@@TomBelknapRoc Hi Thomas.. Good question. In my template, I have ALL of the plugins inactive when starting. Including my Analog chain. When I build a mix slowly I start adding different engaged plugins and it helps heavy hand certain things like eq. I don't have to add a ton of eq to all tracks of drums if I add a slight bit of over all. I have three or so different compressors I use on the drum buss. and they change depending on the song. Same as most other instruments. Once there is a good balance in the mix, I then engage the summing, compressor and api eq and continue adjusting and mixing THROUGH everything while making changes in real time hearing my print back after conversion. As well as the two plugins on my Master. This sounds like a lot but really all of them are doing very very little work. I mean very little work. But the insert quality of each thing combined adds a certain texture that I haven't found on anything else in my 20 years doing it. Really happy with the results.
