This is most likely a 5+ year first welding project, if you love the car then remove the engine and subframe etc and wire wheel back the rubber undercoating an inch or 2 from the rot that'll give you a good idea of how bad each area is and then you can start planning the repairs. Get your self a good gas mig welder (Rtech 180) and watch as much rust repair content on Fitzee's Fabrications channel as you can. One of the key things on these cars when welding is that you clean up the factory wax as once that starts running into the weld and gap it's a struggle from there on. Using a blow torch to heat the inside skins and wiping with a rag does wonders. Lots of patience and graft needed with these cars but worth it if you got the passion for a mk2. Hope that helps.

It’ll be worth it in the end…. I know that sickening feeling when you find something horrible that needs sorting on a car you really like, really feel for you dude! I’m 3 years into a slow rolling restoration to take a solid one to a really nice one, but it’s the mechanicals that I’m going through instead. It’s now at the point where I trust it to drive long distances and it’s amazing fun and everyone loves to see it out on the road. It can be done and it’ll make you smile every time you take it out if you can find the time and money to get the underside repaired properly. Oak green too- lovely!

Love the videos.👍 Just bought a 1990 5 door 16v MK2 and had it delivered yesterday, hope to get it on a ramp in the next couple of weeks and expecting similar rust and rot issues. Took the decision that it will be a 6 year project starting on the structural side and body work in the next two years. It will be worth the effort for me as the MK2 was the car I met my wife in and so sentimental. If you don’t have that link move it on as they are going up in price. To say I have my challenges it took 30 mins to get the bonnet catch to loosen off and open. 😂

You won’t go far wrong, I work on tractors and boats in the field so stick (shielded metal arc) welding was a requirement. If you are only doing body work in a garage or unit just crack on with mig. I also think mig is easier. I found it quicker to pick up anyway.

fella it always actually looks worse than you think, especially when it comes down to welding, once you get started on the teardown and prep work the welding will seem easy, so my advice is call it your rainy day project car, so when its hammering it down you can still be productive inside your unit. And i am sure you have enough guys around you that would be willing to do a few utube videos with you and partcipate along the road to restoration...I was around when these hit the new market place, and while not as nice looking (imho) they still kicked as over the ford xr3i's in terms of excelleration and top end speed..Dont dispare fella just crack on with the rainy day girl, she'll reward you in the end,.

I have a small bumper Helios Blue Japanese delivery LHD 16V 5 door with factory a/c. Yours seems to be the spec everyone wants, values are quite high for good ones now and will probably continue to improve. I’ve restored a number of cars. In my view there two types of cars to buy, cheap basket cases and mint cars. It’s the in-between cars that are the problem, the bodged up tarts that are no better than the basket cases and much more expensive. If you love it and can’t/won’t afford a mint one, keep what you have and preserve it until you can get to it. For goodness sake keep the bird poo off it. I love mine, Good luck!

4WheelsFactory has some hardcore MK2 restoration videos. And there are a few other guys that posted them too. A bodyshop nearby our flat had a Mk2 for rust restoration forever (whole summer). That was in Spain where rain and rust are in short supply. The shop had 2 "bays" and worked on the Golf every day. Spanish GTIs may be low rust but they got driven very hard. Ah Kerby mate, I feel for you with this one. If it were my car, I'd sell as is and find a cleaner example, but that's because rust and bodywork are a never ending pit IMO. It looks bad enough that you'd start cutting bits out and realise it's 10x worse. If this was one you'd had for a longer amount of time - say it was one of your first cars, then sure go ahead and save it, but that deflated feeling is going to stick until you've started repairing it or gotten it sold.

A fair old amount of work. I've had a fair a few old VWs but none like that with structural rust. The panels are available, and somewhere like DST Rustworx up north will sort it but I think you're probably looking at 4-5k ish in welding alone, with you supplying the panels and stripping the car back to a shell yourself. On the plus side it is an oak green mk2 16v which is worth 15k plus in excellent condition however reality is you'll be spending almost that to sort it out. You'll save of course on mechanicals. I've seen a corrado get done for c2500 in welding labour on his page but it wasn't as bad for rust. You may well find a better car if you sold it on, I reckon someone would give 2500 for it as it is. I sold an oak green 16v 3 door for 5k last year which was a project but not much rust. It was in bits though. However they are now few and far between so getting another may be hard. Either way buying a better car for say 7k, that still needs some things but is useable will be much cheaper to sort than fixing this one. When looking at a resto my advice is now to decide whether it is a labour of love, and therefore worth the effort or if not sell it on before getting in too deep.
@kerbsidemobilemechanic

@kerbsidemobilemechanic it was the same for me. I had an oak green 16v, mk3 16v and a Corrado VR6. For me it was the Corrado that won the heart. 3 oldies was too many but 1, such as your Golf is manageable over time. Dan at DST is a metal master and has fixed many a mk2. If you did go with him you know it will be done right.
