My Mk4 Volkswagen Golf GTI 25th Anniversary 1.8T - 337 Edition - introduction and model history

Welcome to Annie!
A short video introducing you to the car love of my life, my 1.8T - 20V turbo - Mk4 Golf GTI 25th Anniversary - 337 Edition - in Reflex Silver which I have owned since new in 2002. A Concours winning car back in the day, the aim is to now show prep her to take her back to the VW car shows and document the whole experience for this KZbin channel.
The next steps will be detailing, servicing and refurbing ready for her return to the show arena.
This ultra low mileage Anniversary Golf GTI is approaching 19 years old and will never be sold. It is a limited edition car rapidly approaching classic car status.

My wife got an 02 2.0 GTI for when our first daughter was born. Such a solid car, kept it until 2017. It wasn't mine but I still miss it. Fantastic cars, which is why so many survive still.

Love the MK4 GTI's! I have a 19 year old GTI VR6 in great condition (original owner; stock), which still, and always puts a smile on my face! Has 115K miles, full leather, garaged, waxed once a year, and full synthetic oil change once a year, always Shell V-power premium gas. Still has the original timing chains, and the original 6-speed manual transmission oil (never changed- VW says to not change). Drives and shifts like new! This car is built like a Panzer Tank, and will probably outlast ME (i'm 60)! I still see some '337', 20th AE, and R32's on the road here in Ohio from time to time!

Finally some relevant Anniversary content. I've just bought 1766 silver petrol with low milage (43k) . Had 150 bhp for last 13 years and the difference is unbelievable. I'm in Spalding too! Do you still live local? Would be nice to meet up after lockdown!?

Thanks Scott. There will be a mix of detailing in here too but the cars will remain the focus at all times...shows etc. They are great cars. I moved from there some time ago but I'm originally from Bourne. I'm now over in Wales but will be returning to shows and car meets as soon as we can (and as soon as the Anni is ready)...so hopefully see you at some of those! Thanks for watching.

Great video absolute amazing example. My Vw golf gti mk4 is a 180bhp 1.8t AUQ non anniversary so they did make those engines in non anniversary golfs.

Cheers Sean. Good point, well made. From memory wasn't it the run out Mk4s that got uprated? I know at the time of the Anni launching 150bhp was definitely the top power for the 1.8T but now you've said that I seem to remember late Mk4s getting a power hike...Thanks for watching

I have owned it for 10 years now, prior to that I owned 1.4 and 1.6 which in my opinion are garbage compared to the 1.8T. I really like how immaculate your Annie is, she is a prime example of how to look after a car. I wish I had mine from new :(

Hey, great vid. I'm coming from the mk4 golf ( 1.9 tdi alh) which I basically ran into the ground. Looking to get some more speed and I'm thinking mk4 gti. Can you give a quick overview of mk4 gti? Should I go for the 1.8 or vr6? what else should I keep in mind

Hi pete. I've just run my 99 gti t (150bhp) into the ground after 13 years of ownership and treated myself to the 25th Anniversary. It's like I'm wearing running shoes now compared to slippers! The extra 30bhp and the suspension/ brakes/ 6 speed box/styling is what the mk4 Gti should have been all along. You can get some of this in the later mk4 gti's but they are as rare as the Anni. Was thinking of R32 but petrol prices pushed me towards the Anni. Got 300 miles from £60 ( slighty heavy foot but what's the point if not ) R32 would be a lot less ( but that sound ). Depends what you want but I'm over the moon with the Anni. If it's speed your after just get a good healthy 1.8t car and map it!

I think Scott beat me to it (just seen these comments - apologies). The Anni is the one to go for to get best spec and performance outside of the R32. If fuel/high mileage/running cost is OK for you it is a heck of a car. Sounds amazing, quick, great handling - it's the one Golf I wish I'd had at some point (never say never :) ) The remapping option is there but worth bearing in mind that most 1.8Ts are high mles now so care will be needed with the remaps. They're pretty tough engines though and ran at higher powers as standard from the factory in the Audi TT/early S3 etc. At their age now, watch for rot but as a Mk4 Golf owner you probably know that one already. I guess it depends what you need an everyday car to do. Most of these now are high mileage and ‘well worn’ so if you need to punch in some serious mileage, maybe not ideal as it will start to fail on you. If it’s just local running around then why not? Parts will start to become hard to get in the coming few years and I know some Anniversary only items already are. I only used mine as an everyday car for a few months when it was brand new so it is difficult to comment with accuracy

I have never found the weight of these things (337 model) can anybody tell me about this? Without the sunroof are like 50 KG less i think from the other models, aside the fact this thing has a 06 MT

Figures are from original sales brochure... Gross vehicle weight is 1750 for petrol and 1810 for the deisel 🤘

If you’re in the US none. Same model but we got the GTI in Europe 5 years before it came to North America so our 25th is the American 20th if that makes sense? If you’re in Europe our 20th is a completely different car and generation to the 25th. Thanks for watching

I think it will be yes. It's a limited edition in dwindling numbers so good examples will retain a classic status IMO. As for prices, who knows? So many factors in that one. Even now, no one can seemingly decide what they are worth with values ranging from £3k to £15k! I've been offered more than that still so it really depends on condition, rarity, originality and the market for classic cars. Thanks for watching.
