I have lost my 62 year old husband last year in Intensive Care after cardiac arrest! The Intensive Care team withdrew treatment against my will! Could he have been saved?

I had a Cardiac Arrest in Somerset, UK on November 13th 2022. I was found unconcious in the high street and not breathing, lucky for me an off duty nurse saw me collapse and gave me CPR. I was airlifted to Mushgrove Hospital and put in a coma for 12 hours. I woke up on a ventilator to be told i had been a very lucky man...i thank God every day that i am now back to work leading a normal life. I also have an ICD in my chest just in case this happens again. Thank you to Danni for saving my life x

My mom is 61. She had a heart attack and cardiac arrest for 30 minutes. It has been 5 days, she is awake, she is breathing on her own, she reacts to stimulus, and she will use her eyes and head to follow you. We are not sure to the extent of her brain injury but all these signs give us hope. She still has the ventilator in because she isn't following commands and the drs are afraid she won't be able to clear her pathway. We need to make a decision on putting in a trachea or "letting nature run its course"

I just went through this with my dad. Long Covid damaged his lungs. He had Covid in March of 2020, but never was able to breathe well after that. March 15th of this year, 4 years later he went into cardiac arrest because he couldn’t breathe. Ambulance came and he was out for 27 minutes. He was on a ventilator in the ICU. We made the decision after a week to take him off and he passed 4 days later! I’m heartbroken 💔

My mother just passed out yesterday in a Cardiac arrest and was taken to the hospital. I went with her in the ambulance. She is Type 2 Diabetic, and when they checked her vitals, her blood sugar was up at around 230ish. Currently, as of now, they told me through the phone that her vitals are solid, just low blood pressure, and fluctuating glucose. She is unresponsive, and it has been confirmed that she has brain damage according to what the doctor told me. They did her CT scan and it went well. They just put another IV line through her recently today too. I just hope she does wake back and will return home well in one piece!

My mother has had a cardiac arrest on the 2 April 2022 and is in ICU on ventilator support. They did a CT scan and are saying that they saw that there is a loss of grey and white matter differentiation. I don’t understand what they mean by this, they did an EEG and found minimal brain activity. She is unresponsive to stimuli and pain.

She is in ICU because she had a boil that turned septic which turned into necrotizing facitis. And they had to do surgery and 6 hours after surgery her heart stopped they also said that it stopped in the beginning of surgery but she was revived right away and they continued surgery. After surgery she tried pulling out her tubes so they sedated her and thats when 6 hours later it stopped again.

One theme I regularly see is when a family is more assertive and life support remains the doctors always say "We must wait and see" there is a reluctance to prognosticate with a survivor of brain injury. When the decision is being made however there is often pressure on the family with very definite statements of survival being impossible and hopeless. Some families acquiesce to the doctors and some assert that efforts should remain in place. In some of the more ambiguous cases survival has occured and I think the Dr's absolutely test the resolve of family where it could go either way.

I am so sorry you went through this with your mum. Cardiac arrest is very hard on the brain and body. It will take as long as your body needs to get better. Unlike being classed as clinically dead, there are apparently 3 tests they do before pronouncing someone brain dead. Do you know if they did these tests? I hope you mum did wake up and things are going good for you both now.

hello my wife had a cardiac arrest on 07/31/18 and now has an anoxic brain injury and cannot be taken off the ventilator or she can not breath. and they cant do a trech because of her neck anatomy. she has now been on the ventilator for 28 days which is a long time. they are giving no hope and suggest that i should disconnect her which i refuse to do because i have faith. she responds to pain when they do the pain assessment. she sometimes responds to the flash light when it is shined in her eyes and she sometimes will wake up when we touch her and ask her to open her eyes but it is not consistent. they say that it took somewhere around 11 minutes to come back but they are not sure how long the heart what actually stopped because the heart was gradually stopping. it caused damage to her liver and kidneys and is also on dialysis. her levels go up and down some days the kidneys are improving but some days the levels rise. they said she does not have brain swelling and is not brain dead but is in a vegetative state. she is not on sedation at all. i dont know where to go from here.

I agree with your videos to a point but the intensive care team also dislike causing suffering , I hate seeing patient's kept alive for people , seizing, being sedated to tolerate the tube for days on end for family to get a second opinion, then realise it's the same opinion, not accepting recommendations, bringing stories of other people surviving. CTB, EEG, testing all confirm severe hypoxic injury and status but still the miracle is wanted and had he died days ago it could have been more peaceful, less agony and now he will most likely breath for a half a day or die from a pneumonia after a month because he cannot cough or stop seizing. death is a part of life and needs to be respected. getting a bed is the last reason to pull out a tube, well patients should leave the intensive care. you can't force doctors to do things to patients, if it is not in their best interests and the decision to palliate is always a collaborative one with family but not for family to decide. the burden of that decision is with those who have the knowledge of what is best in keeping with their wishes.

Patrik Hutzel 7 weeks?! That’s a long time. I’m talking out of hospital arrest, hypoxia, myoclonic jerks, breathing but poor gag/cough and so the likelihood of sitting up and enjoying a crossword, which is what they loved , even at a basic non mobile level, is not going to happen. They just breath and breath and lay there when we pull the tube for another week or two until they die naturally. They don’t talk, enjoy food, enjoy seeing family or even basic things and this is when we pull the tube and they live , it’s not that black and white that people die or stay on life support . Just bring on a ventilator prolongs the inevitable and it’s not fair to the patient. I’d hate it if I were left like that
@lucyselleck6425
@lucyselleck6425 5 жыл бұрын
The undifferentiated ventilation dependent patient is pretty rare. We have those and we keep going when it uncertain but I think you are giving people false hope that their loved one is one of these mythical creatures that will wake from massive brain hypoxia. It’s great to be informed and sometimes I wish families had been more pushy and the team would explain more, there are some shit doctors , but expecting people to get better is sad when the damage is done. I wish they would improve but people die
