Nosebleeds in manga are a direct 1:1 replacement for what they used to draw - raging erections on manga characters. I shit you not, pre-war manga frequently had male characters showing visible arousal with oversized erections sticking through their pants. After the US government came in and started changing societal norms as part of reconstruction, they lost that trope from their art style, but the manga artists still wanted to use it, and at some point the bloody nose became a stand-in for that gag. However! In Sanji's case, the bloody nose gag is taken to the next level since it's exaggerated and it isn't just a stand-in for an erection, otherwise he wouldn't get so messed up..

The funny thing about Return to Sabaody is I saw it way later, after I had already seen plenty of post-Time Skip material. But when I finally did go through the arc, I still fucking loved it. Seeing the Straw Hats come back together, more confident and competent then ever, is still immensely satisfying. And you're right, the arc really does capture this feeling of "This time, the Straw Hats ARE ready for how big the world is.." I do wish Nami and Usopp's newfound swagger carried for more of the post Time Skip era, but it comes back in flashes.

As a target of the joke with the transphobia/homophobia in this arc: I do see Oda as an ally, I think it's just that he thought the scary gays trope would be funny with Sanji specifically. That's my opinion too, my reading of One Piece with respect to queer characters is "He's a bit confused, but he's got the spirit" - he means well but at times lets a lack of knowing he doesn't have knowledge get in the way of his intent, especially if he thinks it's funny. That being said, I also thing there's a clear trajectory of Oda getting better as time goes on with the trans representation in Wano being amazing, with the one nitpick being it seems like he flinched a bit with declaring Yamato as a trans man officially.

Great to see you guys back! Just wondering, when the Pacifista attacked, why did Mama D say that only Luffy and Zoro took them down? Luffy took down one by himself, Zoro and Sanji took the other Pacifista down together. It's significant that the first Straw Hats Luffy meets here -- both fake and real -- are Zoro and Sanji. The dramatic reveal that Luffy's back and way stronger than before is immediately followed by both Zoro and Sanji showing their strength and Oda putting the Monster Trio back together. Leaving Sanji out of that equation feels like ignoring Oda's intent.

I have a theory that what happened to Zoro's eye is nothing more than an embarrassing accident. Think about it: if it was a cool story, he'd tell the crew. He would at least tell Sanji to make himself sound cooler when they're arguing. But he hasn't said anything. Clearly he thinks the scar is cool but not how he got it so he leaves the mystery to maintain maximum coolness.

I also regret Zoro's lost eye, it makes me feel bad. In real life this would've been an undeniably horrible loss. Luckily in OP we can just lose an eye and it makes no difference whatsoever to someone's capabilities/ depth perception. At the very least though, Oda definitely owes us an explanation for how this happened. We can't just pretend this is a wardrobe change like Nami's longer hair or Franky's box arms. about no one addressing Ace, I think there's many reasons for it. One of them is that not all the straw hats knew Ace so maybe Oda didn't know how to deal with that. But in my opinion, Luffy is always trying to be strong for the crew, not because he's insecure or anything. That's just what pushes him to be better. Luffy does deal with the "weakness" of grief, but the crew are not the ones he goes to for that and that's why having Jimbe in his worst moments was so important. Also I think Oda not mentioning Ace here was a way to save it for later.

There is, in one of the fan books that came out information, pictures and notes that Oda had for himself about early drafts of various characters, including the crew. I wouldn't suggest googling them, because they contain spoilers. They originally didn't, but that's because Oda edited some of the rough drafts to erase some things. Anyway, originally there was no Franky. Franky was created by Oda, because he liked the voice actor for Mr. 2, so he created a character for him to consistently have work with. Chopper wasn't cute, he looked a bit more like a depressed Bullwinkle. Brooke didn't have an afro. Almost everyone carried a sword and/or gun. Usopp was a 40+ year old man. His concept was that he'd be a failed pirate captain who hung out at a bar and told tall tales and sucked. He'd be recruited and become Luffy's vice-captain, because he actually knew how to run a ship. He'd fight with just normal weapons, like a typical mook/goon in the series. There were also two other characters that were clearly cannibalized for Usopp. One was a botanist, who fought with various exotic plants, which obviously became the Pop Green weapons Usopp uses now. Another was a (seemingly the proto Franky) a guy who made weapons, but didn't know how to use them, which came into Usopp as the Clima Tact and a few other early gags with Usopp. Zoro was originally going to be a henchman for Buggy. I think he was going to be recruited by Luffy after beating Buggy, but that's just suspicion. Nami's earliest drafts had her with a giant axe and a cyborg arm. Probably not really Nami so much as a generic lady pirate, but Oda really liked the design apparently. Sanji looks like his post-timeskip design, weirdly. It seems like Oda originally intended the age range to be all over the place, but then concentrated the first few crew members closer to Luffy's age.

anyone else notice that luffy's new waist sash is strongly reminiscent of the waist sash usopp used to wear? luffy's relationships with all the strawhats have their unique flavors, but with usopp it always felt like they were true-blue Best Friends just getting up to stupid juvenile shit. luffy is usopp's biggest fan and supporter, and usopp is luffy's wingman and social obliviousness translator, and they just understand each other SO WELL so for me, luffy's outfit change felt like a nod to his best friend on top of keeping a piece of amazon lily with him.

Honestly, every reactor I've seen on KZbin has always been incredibly positive about the One Piece fandom, usually commenting on how absolutely supportive and downright wholesome they are. I honestly think that the indirect perception of the OP fandom has a rap that's mostly undeserved. Sure, there are some power scalers (like there will be for any shonen series that has fights in it), but by and large that's mostly contained within the series itself. The only times I've ever heard of a One Piece character being compared to others outside of One Piece for power scaling purposes have been discussions on who's the best sword fighter in anime ... and though he SHOULD be included in that conversation for legit reasons, I want to think Zoro's ACTUALLY there because he got so lost that he's now outside his own continuity and just wandered into it (which is one of my favorite meme jokes ever). But yeah, I think the perception of OP fans being toxic is largely from being associated with Naruto and, to an extent, DragonBall, which DO have fairly toxic fan bases. Honestly, the only thing I can think of that's kinda toxic about One Piece fans as a whole is how rabid they are in trying to get other people to watch/read One Piece. And, yeah, they ARE objectively correct that most people who haven't experienced One Piece SHOULD, but OP fans do tend to get a bit ... much concerning it. But other than that and the fact that every group has its jerks, I can't really think of any behaviors that are "common" to OP fans that are toxic.

RE Breasts growing on Nami - It does make a lot of sense since she hit a HELL of a growth spurt. Consider that she came from a poor and stress-filled childhood where food was a worry, others lives were being carried on her shoulders and her early childhood was filled with poor diet, too. She was malnourished and overstressed. Then she joins a crew that takes all that away, is being fed properly and allowed to just chill - her body is bouncing back from the damage done to it in her early teens/childhood. I've seen it happen in real life so I know it's actually something that does happen - one day a friend of mine was a b-cup and now she's sporting a DD. She had a shit childhood but around 17 she got into a good place, with good food and no more worries and just blossomed. Robin? Uh.... I guess delayed version of this? I assume she had the genetics for it but only after she managed to find peace with the crew did her body start 'coming into itself' after stress of running forever and having a safe place to live for a while happened. It's a little odd for it to happen when older but I'm gonna assume it's the same.

I don't dislike chopper's new design, but I really do miss his old proportions. He looked more huggable. New chopper's limbs and neck look so thin that I feel like he'd break if I were able to hug him, even after witnessing his super human durability. On the flipside I kind of do like that his head is so large compared to the rest of his body given that this is his brain-point form. As far as franky is concerned it took me many years to figure out what I didn't like about the new design. I miss the pointier sunglasses he had before.

I like Franky, Robin and Nami's post timeskip designs, with the exception of their haircuts. I just prefer their haircuts pre-timeskip more. Meahile I prefer Brook's old outfit, and HATE Chopper's new design. He was better when Oda wasn't trying to make him cutesy, and gave him a more simplistic design. I also hate every aspect of Zoro's appearance post timeskip. Don't like the outfit and I don't like the missing eye either.

This series motivate to rewatch the archipelago and what mama drawk said about how everyone the strawshats trained with coming back to help them escape is even more clear when you compare it to how fake luffy just tried to use luffys name to recruit the most dangerous crews and thinks he can get an easy path to the new world. Only for caribou and everyone else to just fail to fall in line and follow him. He manages to motivate them but every other aspect of leadership was failed. He couldn't organize them. caribou didn't care to listen to him. He then proceeded to try and run away and that just demotivated everyone. A direct comparison to show the true power of luffys and his crews friendship vs... just hiring strong people and hoping they do the work.

i feel like the crew couldn't bear to bring up ace's death cause that's their greatest shame. luffy was there for every single one of them and got them through some of the worst moments of their lives and protected them and everything they cared about, but when luffy needed them most, they were nowhere to be found. he had to face that shit alone. you kinda see some of that guilt and shame shine through in the dressrosa arc the instant luffy deviates from the plan to go get the meramera fruit. at least a few of the crew would have kvetched at him for messing up the complicated plan in the past, but absolutely nobody so much as talks about it now. they understand his reasoning but they also can't bring themselves to acknowledge why it's worth the detour. it's just too painful to talk about.

32:00 so in the interest of no spoilers i will speak only as what I saw in the community when the eye was first revealed. Alot of people were concerned about the loss of the eye but also curious about the implications, are we going to see a neat backstory? wiith an epic battle? did Mihawk do it to keep himself ahead of Zoro after training him? is he hiding some kind of secret eye power. The Mystery of the zoros eye was so intriguing that no one dwelled on "oh no this poor guy lost an eye" very long .

Y'know even though Shanks said he got his scar from Blackbeard I still want to think he got it from Buggy. The scar matches the shape of Buggy's fighting style of using three knives in one hand and I can't think of any attack that Blackbeard has shown that would leave a scar like that. Plus Buggy getting a lucky shot against Shanks when they were younger (thus when Shanks was weaker than he is when he meets Luffy) and parting ways kinda of fits Buggy's whole deal (and also fits with him being the only to damage Luffy's hat). Perhaps Shanks had some other reason he thought Ace going after Blackbeard was bad news, but figured the scar story would be more convincing? It is probably not going to be a popular theory and I admit I am not 100% sure on it myself,
