My mom wanted to be the perfect stepmother for her stepson, so she tampered with my food on my birthday to teach me a lesson. But now my stepdad and dad have seen the video, and things are getting messy for her.

Doesn’t help your case when the cheater is more of a saint than the woman he cheated on. Lady just lost everything because she couldn't stomach being a good mother to her daughter. Truly a pathetic specimen.

My daughter has amazing qualities, and all I want to do is nurture that (same with my son). I don't know why some parents don't do that.

Honestly given how toxic the mom is... I honestly can't say I'm surprised he cheated. I respect that he admitted it wasn't what he should have done and is making sure his daughter is cared for.

The fact both the father and Dave (the new guy) respond the same way, but her behavior proves she deserved to be cheated on. She is a much a Dark Triad personality, perhaps even a psychopath. Dave has every reason to be worried she would do that stuff to his son or him. It also perhaps means she did things to the father as well. I am glad the OP got out of the house away from the mother. Matthew and his father actually keeping contact with the OP shows Dave is a good man, and he raised his son right.

Happily, OP's father was loving, kind, and generous to her. AND he advocated for her--refusing to let Mom browbeat him into compliance. I agree that Mom must have issues from childhood; HOWEVER, I experienced both abuse and misogyny throughout my childhood, and I could never act like OP's mother. I love and cherish my only daughter. In fact, when we were surprised with my first pregnancy, my husband and I were HOPING that the baby was a girl. (Of course, we would have loved a boy to bits--and did when the subsequent babies were boys. My husband actually glowed, when we finally agreed to a sonogram two weeks before the baby was born, and the doctor said, "It is DEFINITELY a boy!") I think that we just loved our little neighbor girl toddler so much--in all her fluffy dresses and Mary Jane shoes, that we were looking forward to parenting a little girl. Children--both girls and boys--are a blessing. I believe that, while they do have individual personalities and bents, they each will blossom and grow, if they are loved, cared for, and nurtured with patience. (Yes, I do think that there are sociopaths, who have had wonderful parents; but I think that there must be something physiologically and/or neurologically wrong with those folks.)

I think it was strictly for practical reasons. Her mother's house was closer to her school district, and she didn't wish to change schools and leave her friends behind. She got to visit her father every weekend, though.

When I first read the title, I thought poison would be involved. So it's not as bad as I thought it would be - but, yeah, it's still bad. It still shows how cruel and vindictive her mother is.

I am surprised and THANKFUL that Mom didn't slip in a flavorless emetic. OP could taste the salt and spit it out. A flavorless emetic would have gone undetected. It would have made OP violently sick, ruining OP's special day.

Mother has serious internalized misogyny. She dumped all her issues on her own daughter. No doubt issues that stemmed from her childhood. The OP should have went stay with her father went the parents divorced. Mother was toxic AF. Father should have dumped the mother long before he fell in love with someone else. OP should have left when her mother gave her bed away. Where was the bed Mathew slept on before moving in with the mother and OP? She went too far messing with her food at her own party. Exposing the mother was years past due. She got everything she deserved. Permanent NC.

That makes sense. Not that it's ok but I bet she was hurt bad or mislead by some females (or males) in her life. Still doesn't mean she should treat her daughter that way. I have a deep rooted fear of men, although I did manage a relationship and have a son. I know that's my struggle, and I'd never take it out on my son. I just encourage him to be a good person.

Lol why would oP be such a martyr for a mother who never gave a shit about her? She could have told her dad years ago before shit escalated. When they moved in should've told him about the mattress. And the stepdad who was complicit for years acting all innocent in the end is hillarious. I can see this AI too has a bias against women. Gotta make them the biggest bad even when the men are clearly at fault too. Hillarious though that it all came to a head with a bunch of salt. Like of all the things she could have done she just put some salt on her plate. That was the final straw. Why OP didn't expose her in front of everybody at the party is beyond me. They had cameras. She could have told everyone what she did and proved it in one go. Didn't have to wait to move out, lord knows her dad would have kicked her mom out anyway. Tell him you don't feel safe and you want him to stay at the house with you until she moves out because you fear retaliation and your mom smashing/throwing out your things. Didn't need to drag it out. Also I'm still mad at the stepdad over the mattress. He was gonna buy his son one so why did he think swapping them over would be a good solution? Did the daughter get the new one then? No. He was being a cheapskate, he never cared about her and now he's leaving her mom because she's getting kicked out and he can't sponge off her anymore and he doesn't want people to know he's with someone who did this shit to their own kid. He's just as bad. There's no way he was so naive he didn't realise what was going on. Same as the father. They're all complicit and they all failed this kid.

“I think her ego was deeply wounded by the fact my dad cheated on her.” WTF? The guy you dislike and refuse to even touch, stopped getting in your space, stopped trying to touch you. He clearly is the greatest of all assholes, then. I mean… he did exactly what you told him to do. And he did it in another town, so as to not saddle you with the social stigma.

Now don't get me wrong dad was scummy for cheating but jeez if there ever was a justification for pushing a partner away op's mom trying to make a case for it. At least one of the parents can take responsibility for their own actions.

Other than complaining about the mattress he got (which actually seemed justified), he himself never seemed to have it in for OP. It's great that he and his father choose to keep in touch with OP, even after divorcing her mother. That being said, however, they should've recognized the red flags early on. After all, when choosing who to pursue a relationship with, you should make sure that you share the same values. ETA: Oops, I just realized you meant the mother - and not OP. But, yeah, I think both he and his father decided that they did not approve of the mother's morals or values. So it's not just an issue of safety.

literally who cares. she was a literal child and her parents adult relationships is not her business like at all. thats her dad and she's allowed to love him. his cheating is, frankly, not her responsibility. and that goes without saying that she never even defended him. this whole damn story is about a child being tortured by their mother and you're mad because they don't hate the one parent who's actually good to them.
