My Mom's 2013 Hybrid Toyota Camry is down again! The check engine light is on and on start-up the engine is trying to escape from it's engine mounts. Let's do some troubleshooting try to figure out whats going on, and get this XV50 Camry on the road.

Where can I keep up with you off the bike?

It would be an absolute honor to have a father as cool as JR's dad! Not only is he one hell of a mechanic but I'm willing to bet he's the one who has showed JR the basics, probably while he was a child thus peaking his interest in engines and ultimately giving us the WatchJrGo KZbin channel that we absolutely love.

My father was the same, started as a car mechanic in his youth, then educated himself to a carpenter/concrete worker, then plumber, then a electrical engineer and construction manager. And instead of childcare I spent my childhood helping him at work, playing around at sewage and water processing plants. Would cause an uproar today though 😂

I'm a simple man. I see Mom's Camry, I upvote. I finally replaced the spark plugs in my Sienna at 200+k miles. The gap was still fine but I figured I wasn't going to put the old ones back in. Computer control ignition and fuelling is impressive.

I've worked on hundreds of these (and own several) one thing that this era of Camry suffers from is an issue with the throttle body gumming up. It was most prominent from 2002-2010 but even these have a habit of the throttle body getting a little gummy and over the years the ECU learns to adjust the idle to the "new" lower idle due to the carbon keeping the butterfly valve just slightly open. This results in the idle dropping below 650RPM and it will cause these to shake when cold or from a start so that's another thing to be aware of, just unplug the battery before cleaning that TB or you'll be sorry lol

You dad is absolutely right about how he’s building that Perkins engine. People think you need to replace EVERYTHING when building one. It’s simply not true. When I first started building engines I thought the same way. When you don’t have a lot of money, you figure out what’s necessary and what is not. I’ve built many engines and never had a failure.

Priuses of this vintage often have micro coolant seeping from the head gasket causing exactly those symptoms. It can seal up quick once the engine starts and you see no apparent coolant loss. A quality borescope in the cylinder will usually show a cleaner "steam cleaned" piston.

Could be 2 items or combo of the two: 1) Could be EGR valve 2) dirty throttle body My wife’s Corolla shakes at idle but I clean the throttle body when I change the oil and it stops until about the next oil change I clean it and it’s good for about 5k miles. The first time I cleaned it it was shaking badly, now it starts to shake just a little by the next oil change.

I messaged him on other media because I too, think it might be related to the EGR system. If the EGR cooler, valve, tube, and EGR ports of the intake manifold have never been cleaned, there is a strong chance this is the source of the shaking and clatter. Plus, it can lead to overheating, and I believe blowing the head basket. I just cleaned the entire system of my wife's 2013 Prius 3 with 160K miles. Along with replacing the water pump, thermostat, PCV valve, cleaning the throttle body, MAF sensor, replaced the spark plugs, and thoroughly cleaning the intake manifold. It all needs to be done.

I didn’t change my volvo wagon’s spark plugs until around 280K miles give or take and they didn’t even technically need them at that point, wasn’t misfiring or anything I mean so normally I wouldn’t touch them if their working. But Pulled them out one day when I realized I not touched them ever and decided it’s cheap and worthwhile since thinking about it. Pulled them out, measurable difference in the gap vs new plugs I had on hand. Like I’m genuinely surprised they ran with as much wear as they had on the electrode, almost none left. Staggering to think it was running so well. After switching out plugs my fuel economy increased a bit I think. Spark plugs these days last forever effectively in a well cared for engine.

Hey JR, i sent you a message on Instagram. Your issue could be related to the EGR system becoming plugged along with the EGR ports in the intake manifold. If this is the 1.8, they are known for this. I just cleaned my wife's 2013 Prius Three and it was nasty. The PCV systems on this engine are a bad design. When everything becomes plugged they are known to clatter on startup and start shaking when it gets really bad. Get a hold of me so we can talk.
