Watching this in May 2024 and I can feel your pain. I am so glad you saved yours. I bought a very small one and when the rot started I was unable to cut enough off and still have nodes. We didn’t make it. I spent a bit more the next time and got a more mature plant. So far no issues. Thai Cons are prone to root rot it seems and I am so glad you were able to stop it. I will check your channel and see how it turned out. Edited to say monsteras can live in water indefinitely.

The first mistake was putting the plant in a big pot. The pot size corresponds to the root size not the leaf size. Overall the video was great for informational and learning purposes. Thank you for sharing with us all.

I had the same problem a year ago, same size Thai. Same terrible soil from a grower. Mine had 4 nodes with roots, the bottom two had root rot the top two were good. I completely cut off the bottom two nodes roots and all. You have a great node higher up on the plant. Use that one to root. Also, it's very important...i let mine grow on top of the soil with just the roots under the soil line. When they grow naturally, they extend along the top of the soil or attach up a tree. When you water, just water for 2 seconds, don't saturate the soil and don't rewater until the meter reads 1-2 for a few days in a row. Also, lots of bright filtered sun, I think that is key as well. I can send you before and after photos of how mine is now. Amazing. I saw at the end you water rooted it and it looks good. When you plant it in dirt again, just put the stem on top the soil and the roots just below the surface. Also...very small terracotta pot initially, like 4". Let it out grow that and then bump it up to 6" and so on. The smaller terracotta pots will dry out quicker and thats what you want in this situation. You need a chunky soil mix. More Orchid bark and also you need to let it wilt and dry before watering. They're very hardy with dry soil, but it will most likely rot with wet feet. You kept referring to the soil bein dry when you touched it, but it looked quite moist. Just make sure when you put it in soil, to allow it to wilt and water lightly only. I had a similar problem with mine when I first got it I think I reported mine about5-6 times. I was cringing when you kept using the soil that it came in, I did that mistake. I ended planting both mine and now most of my indoor plants in a mix of 40 some cactus mix, and 60 orchid mix, so they all drain freely, ever since I switched all my plants much happier. Soap is not for rot 😱 soap is for pests and leaf cleaning. I’ve literally never ever ever heard anyone recommend or use soap for rot. Peroxide or bactericides are for rot and generally only once most of the rot has been removed. Ideally, you don’t bring more water/liquid into the mix until a majority of the rot has been removed because you can spread the bacteria to more areas of the plant. I know there’s a zillion plantubers and anecdotal stuff on places like Reddit or random blogs, but the best place to get plant care info is from people who have been gardening for decades. Like an independent greenhouse in your area or the little old lady down the street with a flower garden. Half the stuff I see on Reddit/the internet is bunk and no, neem oil is not always the answer for every problem and it can be largely ineffective depending on the processes used to produce it (cold press is the only kind that has any active ingredients left) and the purity of the neem oil. Not even sure if neem is mentioned in the video bc I’m only halfway through, but it’s something so heavily pushed in the modern plant care community that I find to be incredibly obnoxious and unhelpful since it’s presented as basically a cure-all. Sorry for the rant and I hope your Thai made it!!

I always check the roots a week after I bring it home. I repot it too just because I've had experiences with root rot, gnats, soil mites, even centipedes in the nursery soil. So basically, I don't trust anyone's soil but mine and checking it after it had time to acclimate allows me to catch any problems right away, especially during the refund period. It seems this monstera was in too big of a pot then went to an even bigger one before water. I find most big-stemmed plants like smaller pots because it keeps us from overwatering them. Maybe try leca after it has grown enough roots throughout the bottom of the plant? Monstera seem to love leca and transition to it quickly, plus it's easier to monitor the progress.

when you have to root rot like that its good to cut it but at the same time you have to cut the same amount of leaves(in your situation 2 or more) because the plant doesn't have that strong of a root system to maintain those leaves, and that's why they are browning. The best you can do to recover this type of plant is with 100% perlite, it dries fast but like that, you will have more control of the rot. In the end, putting it in the water was the best option because the plant was already just like a cutting. plus you don't have to put it in the potting mix when it has rotted, the nutrients in the mix will make it worse with eny plant with that problem. it's like kinda open wound. i am happy that you saved it.

It’s an old video and maybe others have commented on this already but I want to mention a few things: 1. Soil composition for the greenhouse is almost 100% not going to always be the same needs for inside your home. Lighting/humidity/temperature will change the rate at which water is moved in the substrate. This does not have any bearing on how “professional” they are but instead how knowledgeable someone is on proper plant care and transition and acclimation (no offense). 2. The moisture meter may also be defective. I bought two from Amazon that were recommended from fellow botanists on KZbin and no matter if I stuck it in sand or a cup of water the moisture readings were always the same. Recommend to always check the meter before blaming the soil and moisture content. You did good to create a new chunky potting mix that works better for your home. I haven’t checked the rest of your channel for an update video but I hope it recovered well!!! 😄

The moisture meters are seriously not fit for use. They just measure conductivity, they aren't really giving you a genuine moisture readings, so different soil compositions can give you completely different readings, even if they had the same moisture content.

As for a rooting hormone you can use Honey or Cinnamon! I do it and I mix the two and I get new roots all the time.

I’m sorry that you’re going through all of that. That is very sad. I know as a plant Owner it’s a big worry. One thing I wanted to share is miracle grow has very poor quality soil, and I suspect they put way too much fertilizer even in their pumice/perlite. I only use bonsai jack gritty mix and I use at least 60% of it mixed with 40% Espoma cactus succulent mix even in my Monstera Thai. I had one like yours and it was wilted and it didn’t look very good when I first got it but after a few weeks, it’s really gotten taller and leaves thicker, so good luck!

Growing roots in water is always better. You can see exactly what's going on then. When the roots get a couple inches long it's ready to put in dirt. Keep it moist for the first week or two then start letting it dry out between waterings. Once you put it in dirt you can cut off dead leaves leaving stems and that will help it push out new leaves quicker because it's not feeding the dead ones taking all it's energy. I had to do a variegated peace lily that way and now it's doing great.

You did a great job by repotting also cutting all the dead roots at the end and puts her in water for neq roots. I think on repotting you did a great job with the chuncky mix, but you gave a way bigger pot for the tiny roots. That's why those roots got more rot? Please give your plant a smaller pot when you repot her again. Good luck and I hope she'll grow more faster and beautiful than she used to be😊

So glad she’s doing better :)! What I would’ve done is obviously like you did cut off all root rot and then let the roots dry for a bit and then place in semi hydro perlite. Keep the perlite moist and gives opportunity for lots of growth also with the root grow nutrient solution :)

You did great but some mistakes were done 1. Green house with non chunky mix was already a red signal ... 2. After knowing the root had a rot the first thing to do is cut everything mushy ... and treat it with hydrogen peroxide and try water propagating the stem for close inspection of roots . 3. The chunky soil u mixed was percect but pot was way too big ...even 2nd pot was big... i recommend 4 ich or smaller pots untill rootes revive. 4. The leaves closer to rot must be removed completely since it drains of the energy and plant cannot focus on root growth. 5. I am not a plant expert but if i were you i would chop it in two halves in that way i would have greater chance for a plant to survive . Anyways u did a great job and finally plant had roots. I had my thai killed with a rot and i hope no one experience it. ITS really heart breaking .... Now my new Albo and Thai s are rocking .

I made a huge mistake by moving my Thai from Pon into coco! The roots were gorgeous! I had just given me it's biggest leaf, but the roots were so thick and gorgeous that it was crowded. It had rot on the stalk and all of the leaves are gone. I lost most of the roots. Some roots (bigger ones) and a part of the stem with what looks like a bud is all that is left. I put it in Fluval soaked in Mycote, fertilizer and Thrive. I stuck it outside and put it in a prop box after soaking in Hydrogen Peroxide. I am praying my expensive baby comes back. I will never put it in soil or coco again.

@@plantheartbeats UPDATE! Hi! I purchased another plant and all of the soil it came with plus the roots fell off. It had a tiny bud. This plant was stubborn and as tenacious as I am. I popped that thing into Fluval Stratum and today I have a plant with big, beautiful leaves and another coming in. It was so amazing, I had to show pictures to the vendor who didn't know what was happening to make the plant act up. These plants are temperamental, but once you get it happy it shows you love. I purchased an amazing aroid mix from etsy and my plant loves it.

Some mistakes made. First never repot into soil after so much root rot. Second, if you have rot on the stem, cut out the rotted area, but that doesn't mean you have to cut the whole stem. Next, it's better to put it into hydrogen peroxide/water mix, instead of using soap to kill the rot bacteria. Next repot into perlite or leave it in water for re-rooting. I'm only halfway into your vid, but wanted to leave notes. Ah good, you decided on perlite. Good choice. Take Root or Rapid Start are both really good root hormones. Oh man, why did you go back to soil???? Perlite is your friend!!!!! Even water would be better than soil at this point. Okay, that's better that you finally ditched the soil. Let the roots grow out, and grow it in Leca and perlite. It will do so much better than in soil.

Im hoping my thai will survive like yours its been 11 days ive needed to unpot her from perlite and cut more rotten roots and now finally decided to just put her in water and pray for the best. I was wondering did yiu let her dry out before putting her in water ? If so for how long ? Do you happen to remember when you started seeing 1st sign of roots? Thank you

Hi! I so sorry it’s so nerve racking…and no I don’t think I let it it dry out before putting in water. I cut right above root rot…which was all my roots and placed in water. I think it was 2 weeks when I started seeing signs of new roots. Do you still have a good node?

@@plantheartbeats thank you for the reply! :) i had 3 small roots left but i checked today affer putting it in water for 1 day and its rooted. So i decided to cut it all off now its soaking in hydrogen peroxide but im still not sure if im suppose to let the "cut" (the area of the stem where the roots were attached) to dry. So far the plant still has 4 leafs but no root 😭😭

plant would have made it but the pot was way to big from the beginning, the pot should be really small.hope everything goes well for the future 🤞

Hey! Not sure...I just know that white big areas always have a bigger chance of getting brown and some is almost normal..from what I have gathered it’s best to keep them where they get bright indirect light...because they have so much white the plant will need more light for photosynthesis but also be careful that’s it’s not too close to a grow light or harsh sun rays that’s can burn the white part. It’s definitely a learning game.

Ohh I feel the pain. 😩 My M. Thai has thrips. When I bought it, it had 6 leaves. Now only 3 and I spotted it very late, because I was on vacation I thought someone watered it too much and this is why is browning. So I let it dry and repoted it and ignore it. Until one day it clicked in my head, that it might be some disease, because it was not getting better. And I was right, it has thrips. Currenlty saveing it and I hope it will work out. This plant is top 5 in my collection and the biggest investition among my collection. Nonetheless I think soon it will push out new leaf, so my hopes are getting a bit higher. I know you had a root rot, but it's kinda similar hurtful experience. Wish you all the best! 🌿🌻❤

Hi! Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m sorry for what your going through! That is the negative thing about having “rare” plants...they can bring more stress when something happens to them... But the good news is that Monstera’s are fighters...so now that your treating your Monstera there is high changes it will make it: I really though might wasn’t and now I even have a beautiful new leaf!!!! No I didn’t, I actually washed off all the rooting hormone very good and placed it in only fresh water and it’s going great! Lots of roots and there a new leaf opening up now! I’m so happy it’s been successful!

I'm watching this while my TC is soaking in hydrogen peroxide/water, I was wondering if I should chop up my TC today and water prop before putting it in leca? Or is that too much stress at once for the TC? I could just do what you did and then water prop when it's recovered from root rot, I think.

Hi, well cutting all the rotten roots is a must and the hydrogen and water bath after is a good idea. Now to grow new roots, I really liked doing it in water seamed to be the most successful in my experience. Hope this helps!

@@plantheartbeats Yup, I chopped all rotten roots! Ended up leaving the plant in perlite/spaghnum moss/leca/orchid bark as is, without chopping the nodes since I don't want to risk losing the part that doesn't have enough node. After successfully rooting in water, in your place I would've put them in leca to avoid rot root, for me I was too scared to chop off all roots :-D

Please also do not use cinnamon, this can contain substances that dm roots do not do well. Hydrogen peroxide is the best... I also think the pot is far too big for so few roots. I wish you every success in pimping up the Monstera

My opinion only, you are going to have trouble again going from water to soil! I would transfer to moss for a while then eventually soil.

Thai constellation is propagated from tissues of the mother plant. Not uncommon to rot. I forget what it’s called but it’s a bacteria once it has it it will always have it. Psyllium (so?)or something like that? These plants should be in charcoal, cactus, soil, orchid, mixture, Never dirt & A smaller, smaller smaller pot

Not necessarily. I've had regular Monstera's for years with no issues. I have qualifications in Horticulture and BSc as well. I recently got a Thai constellation, and detected root rot today. No amount of expertise is guaranteed to prevent shit happening to plants. I cut off the rotting roots with sterilized secateurs, dabbed the open cuts with hydrogen peroxide, drenched the roots in a low concentration of bleach, let them dry, dipped them in Trichoderma, and then potted it up in a sterile perlite and vermiculite mix. Fingers crossed I can save it. It didn't look as bad as in this video, so that is promising. Anyway, knowing what you're doing isn't always enough when it comes to nature.

You shouldn't use a water meter. Those things don't work, plus you just need to rely on your knowledge of the plant to know when to water it

My water meter has helped me a lot! I have heard not all work correctly. I use my judgment as well but I am very happy with my water meter too! It actually alerted me that the soil it was in was staying wet for too long....it was an indicator something was wrong....I should of changed the soil it came in sooner!

Double check the water meter with a wooden skewer or chopstick. If the results are the same for both, you can be confident in the meter reading.
