Love your channel. Long story short, I bought a dog, first time owner and it turned out to get a ddr. Today my lifestyle is 100% changed to yours. I guess I love him too much so it's fine. I suffer from ptsd so he keeps me busy. Your channel makes me happy that I am not the only ddr owner doing the same exact routines and walk. This breed is so athletic and unique I feel like I needed your channel to understand him better. Thank you. 😊 subbed

My dog and I do all out walks off leash and I sometimes let her roam but we are mostly in a heel. She gets to roam mostly when we get to our trail in the woods.

How long did it take you to teach Odin these commands? Also, did you teach him yourself? or did you hire a trainer?
@germanshepherddad85883 жыл бұрын
In the beginning I got some help for one of my friends he’s a professional trainer point me to the right direction. Teaching commands only took a few session for each command. But off leash training took almost a couple of months

Why do he sleep in a crate? My German shepherd sleeps in the living room. On her dog bed. So she can run and protect us. If she hear a noise or anything. She checks all the rooms at night. Some times she sleeps with my kids. I also want another German shepherd. I just hope I find another fabulous mix of working line and show line. My German shepherd is 9yr.

Thank you so much for a great question only reason I was making Odin sleep in a crate to stop him from building bad habit.!young dog build bad habit when eft alone unattended they start tearing up walls eating couches and the thing with Odin’s he’s a East Germany they mature very slowly but now since he’s almost 2 1/2 years old he sleeps on the couch anywhere in the house he feels Comfortable but apparently he likes sleeping right next to the door at night. And I hope you find another perfect dog like your dog right now good luck.

when do you feed him in the morning? I read that you must wait 1-2 hours before and after exercise to feed meals to prevent bloat. I'm getting a german shepherd soon and would like to know. Thank you!
@germanshepherddad85883 жыл бұрын
I fed Odin twice a day when he was a puppy until he turned one year old. I used to feed him right after his exercise that work for me in the morning in the nighttime i feed him right before he went to bed. Since he’s a grown adult I only feed him once a day at night around 930 or 10 o’clock right before he goes to sleep. Since Odin is on the Raw Diet his food stays in his stomach a lot longer and digest slowly but if you feed kibble to your dog processed through their stomach really fast

I have a working line gsd he is 9 months old 100 pounds and he gets really crazy of other dogs you think I should leave him in a dog daycare so he gets use other dogs?
@germanshepherddad85884 жыл бұрын
Hey thank you for the question. the way I would go about it I will introduce him to other dog by slowly from distance first making him comfortable of them. the way you can do that is teach your dog to focus on you so this way he can learn to ignore the other dogs.
@jakebolster79594 жыл бұрын
You said he developed his protection instincts around 15 months. What about ball drive? When did he start being really enthusiastic about chasing a ball
@germanshepherddad85884 жыл бұрын
Actually Odin was crazy about the ball since he was eight weeks old like extremely high ball crazy
@jakebolster79594 жыл бұрын
German Shepherd Dad interesting, guess my boy might not be too driven. Had no interest at 8 weeks, now 5 months and he’s moderately interested in fetch
@germanshepherddad85884 жыл бұрын
Each puppy is different some have high drive some have Low drive Odin is extremely very high drive for a DDR German Shepherd.

We looking to get our first dog n show line had. I am bit nervous about how much time will he need to be trained n time.
@germanshepherddad85883 жыл бұрын
As long as every day you work on him for at least 10 to 15 minutes and two sessions every day he should be fine. That is just for teaching him commands. Is he gets older it will require a lot more time exercising him mental and physical.

I have a question I hope you can advise & help using your experience, My working line GSD bitch is 9 months with very high drive, loves ball fetch but is currently limping on back left leg. Has Oden had any limping issues? And should i continue to play fetch? (she still wants to), Ive been told growth pains but this limping has now come back again.
@germanshepherddad85884 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question. Odin never limped growing up. I would go get it checked by a vet because that’s not normal limping. For the time being I would not play fetch with her and give her some rest.

@@germanshepherddad8588 Thanks for your advice, any advice on alternative excercise to tire her out and stop her from being destructive in the mornings?
@germanshepherddad85884 жыл бұрын
I would give her some bones so she can spend lotta time chewing. That’s one way to burn energy

Mine had some limping and the vet said she sprained her leg, so no heavy exercise until it heals...like 3 months. I would take her to vet to verify.

Why does Odin have to sleep in a crate ??
@germanshepherddad85884 жыл бұрын
Because he still maturing. His brain is still developing he still in teenage stage right now where he gets into trouble by chewing on the carpet and stuff when he’s left alone.
