Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games kzbin.infoUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

I absolutely agree with this. The only thing is the “I don’t know anyone who would beat a dog for fun.” We rescued a gsd when I was younger, we went to a park with a creek, and this lady had her gsd standing in the water and her and a bunch of kids were throwing rocks and cans at him and he was just standing there. Then she walked over to her car when we parked and we went and told her her dog was beautiful and she was like “thanks do you want to take him for a walk?” So we were like sure?? We walked him on a trail and when we came back she was gone. So we kinda had no choice but to keep him. Poor boy got scared so easily but he was such a sweetheart, and he lived with us until he was an old man. So there sadly are people who will harm animals for fun

I also have to disagree with how much and genetics matters with temperament (90%) and experience being only 10%. The fact of the matter is, humans have more influence than just whether or not they beat a dog. Training matters SO much with any working breed or intelligent breed. They need so much mental and physical stimulation to be happy and have good temperament. This guy makes it sound a bit like if your dog has issues, that it’s most likely the genetics’ fault. Experience does not = training. I’ve even met inexperienced dog owners take on a GSD and bond amazingly with it and give it a great and fulfilling life because they researched it, trained it every day, and excersized it regularly. Excersize, training and research should be stressed over genetics. This guy also makes a mistake praising breeders so much. You’re kidding me if you think the German showline German Shepherds are just fine with those arched backs compared to a much more natural spine. Humans mess around with nature and then want to act like they’re in charge of what’s a good dog or bad, forgetting that the dog didn’t breed itself. Shame on him when he called the American show GSD a bad dog. Call out the BREEDERS, not the poor dog. If a dog is a rescue GSD, hats off to that. Don’t shame the dog, shame breeders is all I’m sayin’. Peace out and love your dogs, whatever type they are. They deserve good lives. Humans rock when they take care of dogs’ needs-end of story.

You absolutely wonderful person ❤ ive had a woman hit my Staffordshire bull terrier, and my cousins Greyhound with her handbag, because they walked behind her whilst she was sitting in a dog park, idiot. Again my Staffie has been hit by another woman because I walked past her, shes nearly been kicked when she went to say hello to a man reading his newspaper, he called the police on me saying i couldn't have her off leash and took photos of her! Then walked out the park, when the police arrived i still had her off leash and called her to a heal and then sent her to the officers which she gladly did with wagging tail all officers bent down to give her lots of love and attention!! Then told me they were not going to report this and that some people just don't like dogs. But really some people don't deserve dogs, so glad your boy found his rightfull home. Ive had 3 staffies all rescues, my nan has had 12 Italian greyhounds all rescues and now has a little crossbreed shes 88! And fitter than me! Seriously though you're story really touched me, as a German shepherd is a breed id love to have, plus i work with dogs as a living!

Rofl thats the 4mo old that I adopted now. 😂 This dog jumped back a few feet and ran away yelping like he was injured just at the sight of my cat... running away from him. He went to a corner, peed all over himself and was shaking. I've owned several GSD over my years but this one is all "chicken". Lol funny though, if chickens were larger, humans would be in trouble. They're actually brutal and ballsy things accounting for size.

Respect your opinion man. Just saying objectively as a fact-checker; German shepherds weren’t originally bred as service dogs/police dogs (as this man indicates). They were originally bred as their namesake indicates; as shepherd dogs for livestock. I think knowing this can clarify the personality traits of some non-“bred” dogs i.e. pure rescue GSD or “farm dog” or European GSD. He kind of glosses over the fact that they had other jobs besides K9-type work.

I thoroughly researched my dog and his lineage before I got him. His parents are both imported. Ma is East German tan/silver sable, 85 pounds big boned lady. Dad is Czech and is darker, has the wolf mask and 105 pounds. My dog was the darker puppy of the litter. He and his litter mates were enormous. He is 75 pounds at 6 months. Lean, muscular and eager to work. I’m training him for personal protection. But you should see him with my HF Autistic son. This dog melts when he sees him. Without training as a youngster he would sleep at the foot of my bed facing the door. He is always looking out for us. His nature has won over my whole family. Even my dog hating Ma 😂 brings him toys, treats and gets down on his level to tell him “Nannie loves you”😂 However. He naturally is extremely protective since 4 months. He is distrustful of men. I think because im a female. When he sees one he stands diagonally in front of me and stiffen up, very alert. He will not move from this position until they are out of sight.

I picked up a show line from a woman who had to move from a bad living situation. I have two sons with ASD, and my WL GSD is alert as can be when anyone else is around them and my wife. He seems to have an issue with full beards (probably because I can't grow one) but never a nervous or timid reaction. Very confident and sometimes he has a little too much energy for my boys 🤣. I hope your buddy is around for you and your boy for a long time. 😀

Sorry, for my bad english. Please be patient: 10:48 Here in Germany, alot of breeders are still working their German Shepherd. Probably all of them are organised in the "VDH". The VDH is an association, that ensures breeding standards, by controlling the studs and dams for health and character. There you'll find the serious and "offical" breeders. However, they are serious about choosing their "clients" too: You need to know, that the demand for "official" puppies in Germany is higher, than what the breeders can "deliver". As an official breeder, you may only have puppies three times a year, to avoid multiplying for profit. That is why breeders dont need to sell their dogs, at sight. They can choose, whom they are selling to, carefully. E.g. GSP's (like mine) are sold to hunters, only. They have such a strong prey drive and will to work, they are not made for laying on the couch half a day. Its almost animal abuse and they will start crawling up the walls, pretty soon. Normally, you have to visit a breeder several times, so that he gets to know you. None of them will sell a puppy at the first meeting. The better the pedigree, the longer the list they can choose from, from all the people being interested. A puppy costs about $1.200 - $1.800. There are 10.000s of breeders being a member of the german "VDH". However, every 5th household in Germany owns a dog and the most favourite breed in Germany is.. ofc the *German* Shepherd. The VDH is a non profit organization and its main goal is to ensure "health", "character" and "original looks" of breeds, in that order. www.vdh.de/ (The english version doesnt even offer the possibility to search for breeders and if you wanted to export one of these dogs to a foreign country, you need to do alot of paperwork) -- Apart from that, you'll find breeders in the newspapers, etc. A puppy costs around 500$. About none of those meet the pedigree standards and the controlling of the VDH. Those may be the family dogs, you are talking of. In Europe, most money is made with: 1. Weapons 2. Drugs 3. Dogs Espescially in eastern europe (Poland, Czech, Romania, etc..)alot of dogs are just bred to breed. They never see light and when they cannot give birth anymore, they get wasted.

Great job illuminating the bad human side of dog breeding. A GSD/Malinois cross is better off than a poorly bred, inbred pure GSD. It’s not all in the certifications or name; it’s got a lot to do with breeder irresponsibility, buyer irresponsibility, and owners giving inadequate mental/physical stimulation and training. This guy isn’t wrong but he could certainly clarify some things, as he did with his one edited sub-caption.

Have a party the next day? Down to party and have a good time. Never really had to worry about the high energy stuff as they matured. Great video, you're so right on point. As a gift I had gotten a beautiful male Show line GSD, who was a bundle of nerves and very insecure no matter the amount of training or sensory exposure. Years later I adopted a 3 yr old black Working Line male GSD who had 2 male owners prior to myself. He was on the verge of being put down due to his apparent aggression. I didn't think he would respect or bond with me as I am a soft spoken petite female who weighed about the same as he did. Turns out he was not aggressive but a very self confident, highly intelligent boy who wouldn't hesitate to put a human in it's place in order to protect. He loved kids. I got rid of the prong collar and little me was able to get this big boy to heel beside me perfectly. I used to run with him on trails and even when we confronted a bear, his confidence and self assurance was right there. No nerves, he always made me feel safe because he was so mentally stable and handled every situation like a "Boss". I will never forget him and will be forever grateful to have had the honour of being his person. There was a huge difference between my Show Line and my Working Line to the point where they didn't seem like the same breed. Thank you again for your honest and informative video!

@Ikon55_
@Ikon55_ Жыл бұрын
Ma'am. I've seen your situation many times. You just happened to get a show line dog that was flawed and not a good representative animal of any lines. Being a professional breeder like in Germany, doesn't guarantee that every single dog is a good representation of the breed. Show or working lines. They both have the possibility of a bad puppy. That's why you should visit different breeders and the one that you like more than once. Learn how to evaluate a puppy especially for your purposes with them. I think that it's irresponsible for anyone in almost anything to take the action of one or two dogs and make that work you think that line does. Find somebody reputable, knowledgeable, and check on the dogs lineage and if the breeder breeds for healthy dogs or not. I have seen dogs from both German lines and have seen a dog here or there that has major problems. And the so-called American German shepherds you couldn't pay me to take one! There's absolutely no restrictions other than they have paper! So anybody who has a male and a female can just slap them together and sell the puppies for money! And probably 90% of The offspring are just terrible dogs. If you get a dog from Germany or responsibility in the states of German lines you will notice a difference right away! And also the public or the want to be owners aren't always educated and they believe whatever a breeder wants to tell them in order to sell them a puppy! So I hope that you and other people of his opinion and concern would recognize there are bad apples everywhere. You should really get involved to see which line you would best fit with and understand! I wish you and any other owner the best! If you get a proper German Shepherd there is nothing else like it!

I know this video is old, but I had to comment on choosing breeders who have working line dogs who sell them to families to be used as pets. This happened to my husband and I - we got a Dutch shepherd without really knowing enough about the breed and ended up needing to rehome him because of fear, aggression, and extreme reactivity. I own that we did not do enough research on the breed- in fact, after looking at KZbin videos on this breed it was then that I realized we may have made a mistake. Looking back though, I wish the breeder would have been up front and honest with us that this breed does not make a great family pet- which was what we were clear about when we had spoken with them. Thankfully we were able to rehome our dog back to the breeder, but it would have saved us from a lot of heartache.

I had the opportunity to meet most of the siblings of my working line's litter. My dog just really stood out to me. I specifically told the breeder I DID NOT want one of the most dominant in the pack, but I wanted a confident dog. That's what stood out most the first time I encountered this pup. The breeder kept & trained the pups until 16 weeks old. I met my pup when the breeder was teaching loose leash walking shortly after shots. The pup was unflappable around other dogs, distractions, just very calm, no fear. I KNEW he was THE ONE. When I met the rest of the litter, my boy and to a slightly lesser extent one girl were the most social with me, most responsive to me on a short walk. My boy was jumping on me after the walk. His sire is not particularly affectionate but loves to work. His mother is a working Service Dog. My boy and I are super bonded, he's neutral to other people, but so affectionate with me. ❤ Dog.

I've had backyard dogs for years, but with 30 years of dog ownership experience (including 2 papered show-line GSDs) & basic vet skills, so I can spot a decent dog in a litter, I always like confidence and engagement to be shown because they will take to training easier and where I live is very busy so a nervous dog would just be a nightmare for us and with us having adhd too, it wouldn't work cos we have a burst of energy just like the dogs do (works well when they sync).

I'm new to your videos. I won't be breeding but I also won't spay/neuter until growth plates are well established - minimum 2 years. Do you have a video on that? There is a ridiculous push to do this before maturity in the US. Most boarding kennels want it done before they will board here and the vets push it too.

Out of all the videos I've viewed, YOU make the most sense on the different Lines of German Shepherd Dogs. I like the fact that you broke it down to only Thee categories, make a lot of sense. I'm not ready to purchase my dog just yet, though I've narrowed down to the German Shepherd Dog Breed, and favoring The Working Line, still have a lot more research to do. thanks for this informational videos...

I have a mix of German/American bicolor that structurally looks closest to the third dog shown in this video but the breeder has a high standard and care for the dogs (health/temper/drive) that they produce/provide and I’ve never had a better GSD/dog in general in my life! She’s lazy when we want her to be but when it’s time to get up and go she’s ready. She has zero quirks, problems, behavioral issues and I couldn’t have been more blessed I trained her basics because she’s smart and I dread the days she won’t be with us anymore. Good thing I got her from a breeder who consistently breeds puppies that grow into the best dogs and every family that has gotten one from her has confirmed with hundreds and hundreds of reviews and testimony 20+ years of experience and third generation family business and breeding.

In Germany we devide in Langhaar and Stockhaar . Owning a working line German Shepard I l last week went to a show competition last week. Not surprisingly me dog was on the last position for not walking elegantly enough. Nevertheless I love the working line. This dog has a lot of power an intelligenz!

Excellent explanation! Anyone considering becoming a first time GSD owner should definitely watch this. There are so many misconceptions in the general public regarding GSD'S and so little understanding - some people just want a German Shepherd- they don't consider temperament and training. Thank you again for being willing to share your knowledge and experience!
@Jet_Threat

Temperament is mostly depending on training + exercise. Then again, training + exercise can’t fix inbreeding. GSD owners need to keep in mind that it’s mainly their actions + their bond with the dog that influences temperament and well being.

I have a white working line German Shepard and he is fantastic. Even at 10 weeks old loud noises ,fireworks ,storms , machinery noise did not faze him at all. Lots of energy, lots of drive and super calm in the house. Very receptive to training and always follows commands. He is a perfect example of what a GSD should be , and he’s white

He is an exception to the rule, and there's nothing wrong with that. This video didn't go into much detail about the white gsds, but as a matter of fact, people who owned white dogs started their own dog shows over fifty years ago, due to the fact that the AKC has never allowed white dogs to compete in show. So they started their own show circuit. White gsds are always directly related to these show dogs. There are not any working line GSDS who have white close up in their bloodlines. You would have to go back to the original first few dogs to find the white color in a gsd.( associated with working line dogs.) I should add that these are all American show line dogs.

@Makado14 the breeder I went to said to get white it has bad bloodlines? Not sure if that is true or not, but have now had a couple breeders tell me that? I liked the look of all white and pure black. They didn't have anything bad to say about pure black only pure white. Not sure how much truth there is to what they said

You really lay it out w/o being bias or crapping on the other lines. Great video for those wondering! My family used to trail working confirmation dogs. I just picked one up from a breeder in TX. Father was IPO 3 and Mother was IPO2 Great looking dogs, that also have drive and work! Family dog for us, but I do love the hard core working lines.

You are completely right about nervy - this is no.1 issue. Temperament has been the most important feature of decent GSD Breeders even back in the 70’s in UK. I have two rehomes- love ‘me, but they have been such hard work - the reality is a lot of time, money and effort.

An eye opener for sure. The dog that got me sold on the breed was a hybrid. He had few of the good qualities you mentioned but we loved him until his 15th year (hybrid vigor so it's said). Such an intelligent breed always willing to learn. Looking forward to my next experience.

Very informative! Thank you. And you are 100% right about genetics. My first GSD (WGSL Coatie) was by an FCI world winner who even impressed German WL-fan surveyors with his structure, and temperament yes, but also his drive. She was versatile, confident, and needed a lot to keep her occupied. My current Coatie WGSL is a male whose father actually had decent drive, but he takes after his maternal line- He’s a big softie who bites a jute like an ear of corn, startles at frogs, but has a GREAT nose, focus, and drive for scent work and is so calm and lovely to be around as a pet and companion. Dog reactivity DID come as he matured, but with stronger handling he is getting over that. He sounds vicious when someone approaches my door, and for my purposes that’s fine 😂. I adored my strong female, but I was much younger & more active, and now, my sweet, beautiful albeit dumb August vom Haus Juris “Auggie” is perfect for my lifestyle.

Yes. People reading your comment gotta remember human actions are just as important to the confidence of a dog as breeding. Any dog, no matter how well-bred, will be anxious without proper physical and mental stimulation. Kudos to you to providing your working-line GSDs the stimulation they need. Nobody, I repeat NOBODY, should get a working dog without being able to provide training/work/stimulation. Thanks for drilling home this point for these great dogs.

You nailed it on the mix of Show and Working or it could be Pet and Working or a combination of the 3. Got an 18 mo old rescue GSD 2 months ago. I’m her 4th owner and lucky for her, she was at a good GSD rescue..for a long time. She’s a Panda with papers that appears to be German stud lines and American whatever lines in the Panda bitch 🤔 My girl knew nothing when I got her, not even fully housebroken. Definitely unusual looking but she had a curious, cautionary and nice disposition and she wasn’t reactive when we brought out our young Pitbull so I brought her home. She learned how to play ball the first week when she saw one of our other dogs do it, she was pretty easy to housebreak and she’s is a fairly quick learner of French Ring and English commands, she’s not consistent yet but getting there. She learned how to play tug this week and dragged me all around the yard..omg..what DRIVE! My husband and I take turns playing ball and she is nearly impossible to tire out for more than half an hour, we LOVE IT. We’re retired (old..lol) and she is a joy to play with. She’d never been socialized so I put her in beginner obedience…ohhh…those first few weeks were painful as she exhibited zero food drive and mentally shut down. Sigh..I was worried, BUT this past week she was acting like a much more secure dog 😮and remembered commands for the first half anyway and did take some food. So I disagree when you say lack of socialization doesn’t play a role, it does. She is a mix of all 3 of your dogs in this video, it’s amazing to see this. I will eventually know what percentage of her fear is hereditary and how much is lack of socialization and I will let you know..lol. I’m working in my class with a long time breeder of working lines who gently said I may be disappointed that I don’t have the dog I’d like to have for ring work. Heck, I’m an old lady who’s never done it before, it will be a freaking miracle if we both are even allowed to enter a beginner class 🤣🤣 the point of my long comment is to say, I appreciate how you are educating the public on breeding the best, it’s important for all dogs and other animals, I also like how you break down the differences so we can ultimately work with what we have when we rescue a poorly bred but deserving GSD and make that dog the best he or she can be. Can’t speak for anyone else but my rescue GSD girl is worth it!

My GS has an Argentinian sire, Russian dam, both have allegedly great pedigrees, my pup is a handful at 10 weeks, he just stood his ground with a gigantic wolf dog, made me laugh out loud, just planted his sturdy little legs and barked in that giant boy’s face, no fear at all....the father seemed like a very nice dog, the mom had some grit to her. Can’t wait to see how he turns out..I’m in training already with him, both me and at a local place to me..

This video made me nostalgic. I had a male working line from a police dog breeder ( I'm not a police officer though ) that looked exactly like yours, except for the head and ears, that were much darker. I can only confirm what you say about them, I had mine doing dog-agility and I'd take long walks every day where I included playing / searching for a ball, a stick, or simply running back and forth, which he found to be fun I think. Never had an issue with biting or other nervous behavior. Just a great dog and a friend, who's deeply missed now.

We have had German Shepherds for over 40 years. Here in Sweden, dogs are really expensive. Which is good. An expensive dog is well taken care of, not let out on the street because the owner got tired of it. The last one we bought cost 25,000 Swedish krona = 3,065.80 Canadian dollars. He is almost all black, square working dog. He is trained in protection, tracks and of course obedience, otherwise other training will not work.😁

I have owned 2 male show lines and multiple pet lines. Most of the pet lines were terrified of thunder. The show line dogs didn't seem to be phased by thunderstorms. Both lines are hit and miss when it comes to home protection. Fortunately most humans are afraid of GSD, so just their presence in the yard prevents strangers from coming in the yard.

My GSD can just go all day if I let him. Him and his brother. It's insane the amount of difference where you have working lines vs. show lines in the same area, doing the same thing, and see which one doesn't want to continue to do things.

My sister has a chihuahua that is super skittish and darts around like a dog that was "beat". He never was, that's just how he is. I have his sister though and she's supper confident unless she comes across a large farm animal. She's not around them usually so she's unsure of them. Also she's 6 lbs and people ask me all the time if she's a "teacup" chihuahua. I usually just tell them that it's a term coined by byb and that the ideal weight for a chihuahua based on breed standards is between 2 and 6 lbs. They can be bigger as long they are proportionate but "teacup" chihuahuas aren't real. It's a way for a byb to get top dollar for a pup that is going to be the correct weight but usually has some form of deformity or defect that should drop the price significantly but doesn't.

Here in EU we divide GSD into beauty and working line. I have had both. And from my experience, their character, courage, defensiveness were the same. Even the energy level was the same. The biggest difference was the health levels. Even with all the pedigree certificates, the beauty line ones always ended up with some kind of health sensitivity. Anyway, GSD are my favourite dogs ever! Edited to add we always had dogs in our farm. Meaning, kind of companion/defense dogs. I have no clue how to have a GSD in a small city apartment :D

Welp.. this video just made me realize my GSD who I thought was working line, is a pet line. Now everything makes sense. I'm kinda sad. He gets sluggish about work and can't stay engaged, kinda small (male) exactly like the 3rd one. Skittish/nervous but I built him up and made him as confident as I can. But without me, he would have been a whiney scared reactive mess. I was hoping I had better genetics, but now it all makes sense. Thanks Haz even if it's bad news for me.
