The new set up looks great. I recently did my interview at the Embassy of Japan in the UK for JET. Hearing your experiences over the years has given me a lot of insight! It's great some of the OGs like yourself and Victor are back!

Congratz on that. That’s a hard program to get into but you pretty much won the lotto on that one. Great pay and great schools!

Great setup and awesome lighting. Much better than the old format! As for your story: a classic. Japanese is a very hard language, it's context based and there are many words which sound super similar. It's just a matter of time until you make your first big mistake and people start either giggling or looking away in discomfort. But hey, that's how you learn not to make this mistake ever again. And the good thing is that you can get away with maaany mistakes as a foreigner. :)

Hey Scott long time follower here, I knew they couldn't keep a good man down. I still remember the story you told about when you first got off the plane in Japan and not long after how sick you got and not knowing a ton of Japanese how you had to communicate in a non verbal way..good memory. And I will NEVER forget the tamago song... Lol

Oh wow that brings back memories lol. I lost my voice in the first week and Japan had all these crazy iodine mouth washes. I remember thinking I just want some goddamn DayQuil. Which they had their own version of but i had no idea wtf I was doing or saying lol.

My sister had a similar story when she was studying at Kansai Gaidai, she went to karaoke with some friends and when she was a bit drunk, she ordered "shoyu" instead of "soju" and although the waiter gave her a strange look and asked if she was sure about it, in her state, she was very adamant that that was what she wanted... But I think possibily every gaijin that's ever been to Japan could tell a similar story of messing up between two words that are somewhat similar or close in meaning , orthograph or sound... The camera and mic settings seem fine to me, BTW!
@unrested5 ай бұрын
I never did this but I remember hearing stories of gaijin at nova buying miso paste thinking it was peanut butter and making sandwiches with jelly and after biting in understanding what a critical mistake they had made.
@LadyDarkSunMoon5 ай бұрын
@@unrested Wow, that sounds like the only way you could make this worse tasting is with marmite or vegemite instead; that would be WAAAAYYY too salty and much less smooth that peanut butter (especially if you're used to the very sweet type we have in North America!)

I love you, Scott, but you made some big errors here. 蜂蜜 (hachimitsu) means bee nector, aka honey. 鼻水 (hanamizu) means snot/mucus. I think you're mishearing みつ (mitsu) for みず (mizu). If I'm misunderstanding, I'm sorry. Also, I'm including the romanji in the parenthesis for the potential readers; I don't know your Japanese level. Regardless, thank you for the story. I enjoy hearing about it.

@@unrested water should be mizu, but my point is that you are pronouncing it kinda like mitsu which means "three". I could be wrong though, I don't speak japanese.
