I hate many of the novelty songs from the 90s, such as “I’m Too Sexy” and “the Macarena”. Another song I can’t stand is “Sweet Caroline”. When people sing along with it and add the extra “So Good”s, it makes me cringe. In the prog rock realm, I am really put off by those “honky-tonk” songs by ELP, such as “Benny the Bouncer” and “Jeremy Bender”. What is up with those? And then there are plenty of Genesis “hits” from the 80s that are so bad that we don't even need to mention them. But I do I like your gom jabbar reference.

You and I remember The Firm very differently! My paraphrase of Clint Barton just signifies that I am old and recall them being a band partly comprised of Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers, so... Otherwise, you know music worthy of hate that is unfamiliar to me (except Love Shack - and I fully agree, though I could easily come up with 10 or more that I hate more), which is something for which I should likely be grateful. I'll mention my girlfriend flies into a murderous rage over "What's Up?" by 4 Non Blondes, and who can blame her, really.

Nothing to beat the absolute horror of that JMJ clip (I truly sympathize), but mine is probably "Marcia Baila" by Rita Mitsouko, a French pop duo from the late 80s that my then-friends at the students' club absolutely loved and tend to put on repeat. This aside, pretty mush 80% of the French "variétés" are a sure way to make me leave a room.
@RhymeSignatures2 ай бұрын
I'm not familiar with that one! Curiosity got the better of me, I lasted about 90 seconds before it bored me haha I don't hate it, but I lack the backstory with it that you have!

@@RhymeSignatures I have the feeling that 99% of the loathing we have against songs is not due to the song itself but to the context.
@RhymeSignatures2 ай бұрын
@@StephaneGallay oh absolutely agreed! A bad song is easy to avoid, we can just remove ourselves from it, but a song we "hate" has history, has context and meaning, and it makes it all the more fascinating how we apply the label of hate to a piece of music

My worst song? Pink ft. Nate Ruess - Just Give Me A Reason I know this is a bit personal, but it came out during a time in my life where I was in a relationship and a victim of domestic abuse. Thankfully, I've since gotten out of that situation and despite the issues in my personal life this year, it's still miles better than it was back in 2010-2012 when all of this was going on. Anyway, in a similar twist as your #1, I was unable to escape hearing this song at work, sometimes upwards of 10 times per shift, and its lyrics and tone were so completely antithetical to what I was going through that I absolutely resented this song and would leave the room if I possibly could. Pair it with a melody that sounds like someone who's played music for the first time in their life, and I just couldn't escape hearing it even in my own head. I hated it and I still hate it. It still brings up some really terrible and tragic memories for me and I'm so glad I'm no longer suffering through those times.

To me, if i had to pick something to vehemently dislike, it would have to be particularly icky, and i sadly have no stories with this. 1. Kidz bop adaptations of literally any song. Add in changed lyrics, vocals that disrespect the original artist, and music that can only be described as vehement electronic nightmares. This was picked out because of its disrespect for the artist and is a broad category because it's all like this. 2. Electric callboy as of recent. Due to seeing it on a hard rock Sirius XM channel and the music simply being fake and electronic. It's weird to me how that works. 3. Bass loops. Vibrating bass loops. How to abuse speakers and vibrate the brain. I only know it because of my brother's obsession with rap and it's vibration. It's why i hate fake bass used in excess. I can tolerate it but in small doses. 4. Paul McCartney - wonderful Christmastime. This turns me off because of its boingy sound. It is something I've listened to in the past considering it's popular in the Christmas season. I don't mind the rest of its instrumentation or vocals. The boings are so annoying to me. 5. Any Taylor Swift after Look what you made me do. It's all not unique, more off putting. And the ten minute tracks of music that is so overstaying its welcome. It's crazy to me that people with no taste in music would listen to something who's length is comparable to prog metal and is yet fake and gross.

I absolutely cannot stand "Take On Me" by A-ha. Not only is it just an overrated, overused, generic 80's track that pops up EVERYWHERE, but I have a personal anecdote here. Shortly after graduating college, I nailed an interview with a big, well known company. I made it to the final round of interviews where myself and the other finalists were thrown into a gauntlet of four interviews. The first three were excellent, I feel like I nailed them all. The fourth guy had a completely different demeanor and I could immediately tell we did not gel. Somehow we got into talking about music and he asked me my favorite band. At the time it was Pink Floyd and I said as such. This dude said A-ha was his, and I was flabbergasted. Anyway I didn't get the job and I solely blame that guy and I've hated them and that song ever since. Also Don't Stop Believing is utter trash and I hate that everyone else loves it.

Preach!! Take on Me is grotesquely overrated, and a monument to the sickly sweet, overproduced guff that would dominate the 80s. It's one of those unavoidable songs that was never actually any good, but due to oversaturated radio airtime, we've been conditioned to think it's good. It's trash, it's always been trash, and it's a hard "skip" any time it comes up on a playlist. And agreed with Don't Stop Believin', Journey have MUCH better songs!

Man, I remember when it first dropped and everyone was going nuts for it Now it's the song I associate with terrible wedding receptions, middle management who think they're "relatable", and the tragically late aunt / uncle who thinks that by liking this song, their nieces and nephews will think they're cool Terrible terrible garbage haha

I also cannot stand the B-52s. Never heard Lazy, I don't think it ever crossed the pond. I do love David Byrne but I can see how that song could get very irritating very fast. 'Jessie's Girl' for me. Insipid, misogynistic lyrics, an earworm hook that won't get out of my brain for three days every time I hear it, and inclusion on every "best of the 80s" compilation ever put together put it to the top of my personal list.
