Her husband's reaction is exactly why she took the money...because she knew she could and get away with it. This "mother" is selfish and lazy. My mother took out two credit cards in my name when I turned 18 without my knowledge and then defaulted on both. I only found out about them when I saw mail at her home with my name on it 2 years later. I called the credit company to confirm I had accounts open then told my mother she better pay those cards off or we’re going to have some problems. If she hadn’t paid those cards back, I was going to file fraud charges against her. I lost so much respect for my mom after she did that.

I don’t disagree. Slightly different situation but my Grandpa sacrificed a lot so my grandma wouldn’t have to worry about money once he died. Well she gave all the money to her son. Even her social security checks went to him, and she lives in poverty somewhere. And that destroyed the family as it emboldened that son to steal from the rest of his siblings and family members. My husband & I both come from collectivistic cultures where the elders, especially the parents & grandparents are to be honored NO MATTER WHAT. It can become a very toxic dynamic, and we both have had enough and cut ties with them not too long ago. It’s not at all easy and actually a very painful thing to do. I wonder if this is the case with this couple. Either they BOTH have the mindset to “forgive” and let it go, or cut ties, they must be on the same page together. Otherwise his mom, and probably the rest of his family will drive a big wedge between the two of them. Hopefully the husband gains some courage & sets his priorities straight.
