@MerlotandFamily6 жыл бұрын
I agree it does sound like that! I only know how we say it to him, which is the following sequence: Us: "Goodnight, Baby Bird, oh goodnight." Merlot: "Goodnight?!" Us: "Oh! Goodnight!" And then when he says it during the day, we say: "Oh! Goodnight! I didn't know it was bedtime already, but goodnight I guess." So since we aren't really using full sentences we just assumed he's not as well, but you never know because he talks to tons of people every day and has a few babysitters.

From what I've gathered in my research they have never been a very popular bird until extremely recently. Avian enthusiasts are only just now realising these birds are not too loud, quite good for tackle snuggles, eat ANYthing (which is rare for parrots. Usually getting a well rounded diet down a bird is next to impossible) are somewhat more clear of voice than their cousin the ring-neck parakeet, don't imprint on a single human being if properly socialized- and the list goes on. Honestly given all that, I don't know why Moustache parakeets haven't blown up over night as some kind of sleeper hit. There's next to no info out there research wise, and hardly any videos of Moustaches for Merlot to watch, hence the birth of this channel. What can I say? The kid's a diva, and he likes to watch himself on the big screen.

Merlot and Family yes I will let you know when baby arrives! Should be 12 weeks roughly as breeder says babies are 2 weeks old right now. No DNA sexing so I guess it’ll be a surprise whether male or female. Hopefully mine will be as outgoing and fun as Merlot!
@MerlotandFamily5 жыл бұрын
I'd say it took Merlot about a year to show his gender in his beak color (boys are orange, girls are black). But my DNA test was only $20 at my local pet store. They trimmed his toe a bit short to get a blood smear and then stopped the toe with powder. I even got a little certificate with both ours names on it stating he was a boy. I tell people it's our birth certificate and sometimes they believe me. Lol. Totally worth the $20 bucks for that.

@@bethanybouley6679 I hear that. I worked in pet stores for 5 years Nd was the "Rat lady." I took in rescues like crazy and would try to rehome them through the store where I worked, then sell them all the goodies they needed through my store. It was a nice gig while it lasted. I'm relieved to be out of that situation though. It was very emotionally taxing. I think birds would be at least three times as taxing as rats though. My fur kids are pretty self sufficient. Birds, in my limited experience, seem far more emotionally needy, though my rats are in a colony (a Mischief) while Bird only has me.

I would pinch his upper beak very gently between two fingers and move with his face when he tried to bite so that he'd realize it was futile and give up. @MerlotandFamily5 жыл бұрын
It is for Merlot. He tolerates head to shoulder pets, but absolutely no scratchies. However, that doesn't mean he isn't one of the most affectionate pets I've ever had, it just means his affection language is different. He loves to be on my shoulder every second that I will allow him to. He's ADDICTED to beak boops (which are his greatest weakness) and he's a kissing fiend. He's also never bitten (okay, not never, but he's only draw blood twice and he was going through his hormonal phase. We don't hold it against him).

If something disruptive happens, or if he thinks we've magically managed to forget about his presence, he makes sure to remind us. However, there's no routine to his shrieks.

So how could I approach more friendly to free it out of the cage?
@MerlotandFamily3 жыл бұрын
@@EastStarCompany Sure! Let's see what I can do. Merlot actually went through the same thing. At the age of one, Moustache Parakeet's (MPs) go through a "bluffing" phase. Think of this as puberty, or their birdy teen years. That is most likely what's happening, and, just like with a human teen, how you handle this stage of his/her life is important. With Merlot, I just put on a glove and let him try his worst. Two feeble attempts at bitting at usually led to me scooping him up and smothering him with kisses. When I didn't withdraw or flinch, though, he gave up and let me bring him out of his cage. As soooon as he was out of his cage there was usually a huge personality shift, though two whole times ever he bit my cheek for no reason. Another follower asked me for advice here, for the same thing, and she took a different approach. For one, she'd been covering her bird cage. MPs don't respond well to covered cages in most situations, so she stopped doing that right away. Then she'd sit by the open cage and read to her bird for at least an hour a day. Then she'd ask the bird to step up. At first the bird would strike, and she'd pull her hand away and keep reading. Eventually, the bird started to step up in the csge only, then she started flying around the house. Now those two are besties. Feel free to keep updating me on the situation and I'll do my best to walk you through day-by-day. The good news is that the bluffing phase is usually only one year out of 20+ with MPs. Some birds, like African Greys, are in their teen phase for a full decade just like humans.
