OMG, yes on the immediately need to change colors after just an hour thing. I do not understand people who complain about a manicure not lasting a week or TWO! Like how can you wear the same polish that long?

I feel you so hard on one-brand stans. They need therapy. I know a brand that cultivates a toxic fanbase of bullies gathering in wolf-packs and going after anyone who makes comments complaining (politely and constructively) about formula issues, customer service, etc. These are all grown women, many have kids. Beyond a pet peeve, really concerning behavior.

One of my pet peeves is when brands (mostly BKL lol) seemingly decide to ignore the polish pickup theme.

It’s not just chipped nails, tipwear on myself drives me crazy. I totally agree about the nail photos with polish in the cuticle area. Cleanup doesn’t take that long and it comes off to me as just being lazy.

1. Polish slopped all over the skin. 2. Orly and Zoya 'puddle' pics. I want to see it ON. Nails. 3. Stans, especially HT stans that think Cristine is their deity. 4. Collections with more than 7-8 polishes are Too Big and would benefit from editing. 5. Very long toenails or even artificial toenails in pedicure pics. How do you wear shoes with those?

I feel all of this. I definitely post pics without doing cleanup, but I don’t actually do that step. I’m not trying to be fancy, post reviews, swatch in any kind of professional capacity, etc. I’m chilling and just doing hobby stuff. I’m sure it bugs people that I post such unprofessional photos, but… like… I’m not trying to be a professional. 😅

None of us is "professional', but most have enough pride to not post pics of sloppy manis. I take that back, it's not really a manicure if you don't do finishing touch-up, it's just slapping nail polish on your fingers.

@@BrittMFH yikes. Some folks may have physical or mental barriers that make extra steps more challenging. While there are generally recommended methods/steps, cleanup is optional. It’s strictly esthetics and (potentially) longevity. Fortunately, it’s easy to unfollow or block accounts that you don’t want to see. People painting their nails fall on a spectrum ranging from casual hobbyists to professionals, which could include licensed nail techs, paid swatchers, and content creators. The expectations are different for someone being paid for their photos vs. a hobbyist.

I'd say Holo Taco and Mooncat fans have parasocial relationships with the brand owners and it translates to the obsessive way people relate to the product. Especially with Cristine because she was huge on YT before the brand existed, but Michelle also has a strong presence on the brand's social media and I see fans attaching a certain celebrity to her image.

It is embarrassing the number of times I’ve painted my nails and then looked at it an hour later and said that’s just not what I want right now and repainted them. I don’t know why I cant figure out what I actually want to wear before I open the bottle. 😂😂

Your comment about brands all releasing the same colors at the same time... Yes. So yes. I've been wearing polish for only a year and I've already gotten tired of it. Then again, I'm not a "seasonal" polish wearer, everything is up for grabs any time of year, and I don't like pastels or neons, lol.

Totally agree with the single-stan fan thing, I immediately thought of Holo Taco lol. I started my nail polish hobby exclusively buying from Holo Taco, they have an amazing spread of 'basic' specialty finishes. However, I find their mixed formulas to be usually not as exciting or well done as the stuff you can get on Polish Pickup or other indies.

Try some Dawn dish soap on the oil stains! It's my mom's go-to for any type of stain but especially oil.

I find most of the die hard mooncat and holo taco followers that only buy from them to be on the facebook/discord groups. Like, you do you people, but damn there are so many other makers out there that are doing so much fun stuff at similar or even less expensive price points.

Yes I’ve noticed this a lot with Holo Taco that they tend to be single brand people, also the collection launches that are like 4 hours long…I guess I’ve never been that into HT but I don’t get it 😂

I'm with you about sometimes wanting to change my polish shortly after application. What looks great in the bottle doesn't look great on the nail all the time. 😊

I have pet peeves about just about everything, the first one that came to mind about nail polish is when makers tell the inspiration is whatever but don't show a picture of the inspiration.

I'm with you on nail length, but for a slightly different reason. I get to "just the right length" - not too long, but enough that all the pets are really happy with their scratches. I don't break too often, but I can't file each nail exactly the same amount to save my life. I just end up cutting them all short and having an upset cat while they grow out. As far as crafting goes, you'll damage more thread/yarn/fabric by having chipped nails then wet nails. Chipped nails/polish catches on things and you'll either break the nail or the polish will chip into your project. This could also just be a me thing, but quilt piecing goes faster with a fresh mani.

I 100% agree with the "excuse the lack of cleanup" nail pic posts. It's the fashion group equivalent of "excuse the dirty mirror." Maybe just get the thing into a state where you don't have to make excuses for it, BEFORE uploading a photo and typing a caption where you have to apologize? It makes no sense to me.

I always have black holo so that I can cover chips with a french tip in an emergency (like traveling but can't do a full mani) I love wearing dark colors, so chips really show. Tip wear is fine, but a proper chip...😬

I leave huge cuticle gaps so I don't flood my cuticles Per hand I prefer the same length, but I'm not to bothered by the two hands being different lengths

I agree with many of these! And I hate having to wait for nails to dry to pick my cross stitch back up. Also I feel that I am constantly playing a game of russian roulette with my jojoba oil and WiPs and it's only a matter of time before I ruin a half finished project somehow.

I also have other hobbies than nail polish. They are a different form of self care than doing my nails. Like you, I feel the need to wait at least an hour before I return to doing anything with my hands. But waiting that hour also, I think, adds longevity to my manicures because the polish really has time to harden. So I indulge in a hands-free hobby, reading, during that hour.

Yes, sometimes I do wish to change my polish within an hour. But I wear the new mani a day or two. Sometimes I even feel sorry I took the prior manicure off as in my mind the color or stamping design was prettier in the one I removed. I also agree with you on not liking photos posted with flooded cuticles. I tend to change my polish when it's chipped.

For themoil stains, try Dawn. Apply generously and use something like an old toothbrush to scrub the soap into the fabric. Do that to both front and back, and wait overnight before laundering. You hit most of my pet peeves, although I will add what I call competition selling/buying. I do NOT buy Holo Taco because the first couple of times I tried...after seeing a youtuber spotlight a cool collection, it would be sold out. And that was it. Gone forever. Like...no. I am just not getting into that.

I feel you on the crafts thing - I'm luckily able to work from home so I do my nails in my lunch hour, then after work they're ready to go! I also have a cuticle oil pet peeve - when people post swatch photos with their fingers dripping in oil. Just wipe the excess off 😩

Yes! I also have those days I paint a mani and immediately want to change it up! If I catch it while painting I sometimes remove and start again with a different colour. But a lot of the time I’m just accepting it’s my mani of the week (I paint weekly).

I have never bought a Holo Taco or a Mooncat polish because their online fan bases are super obnoxious. Also they cost too much. I'd rather support indie makers.

Aaaah. So sewing is my main hobby, and I'm also a florist, so when I picked up nail polish as a new hobby it baffled me greatly because I don't understand why this is a thing for me when polish don't look good for more than a day of work and when I paint my nails I can't sew or craft... painting nails has become my procrastinating excuse I swear

And for your oil stains on your work shirts - pretreat with Dawn dishwashing liquid. It will cut the grease like nobodies business.

I complete agree with the chipped nails, not cleaned up cuticle area, too extreme of stan (like you said, putting down other brands), and finishing a task (that's why I leave my nail time ONLY along with being on the computer with music and not going to do anything else)! The one about the cuticle gap though, I guess it depends for me. When I see the moon of my bare nails underneath, that's when I know I NEED to change them ASAP. As for the cuticle oil, I do understand where you're coming from cus then my phone has fingerprints, so I make it a habit to get a slip of paper towel to wipe any access. Maybe this works for my peace of mind. 🤷‍♀ Also, that cowboy hat is so cute! 😆

Also everything I do seems to involve my hands, too, except I'm running a household with two young kids and a couple of cats and it never seems to fail; someone will need me to get my hands wet for something roughly every 15 minutes. That hour of sitting is painful. I have sensory problems with the oiling. I do it, but I kinda hate it.

The whole chipped nails pet peeve is also my dad's, which is why we weren't really allowed to wear nail polish when I was a kid; he knew too many girls in his neighborhood growing up w/ chipped polish and dirty nails underneath. I guess he thought we'd do that too. As to people posting sloppy manicures (no cuticle cleanup, etc.), I'm always baffled that they post AND get all these likes & comments. I'm thinking "do people REALLY like this manicure w/ polish everywhere on the skin & cuticles?"

Oh mylanta I am right there with you. I have come across people wearing polish in public that’s horrible chipped and I want so bad to telling to fix it drives me crazy. Yes to the polish brand stans, I understand being loyal to a brand but not at the expense of another. They are all trying to survive in the nail polish world. And I get the seasonal collection pet peeve. I like it when polish brands go outside the seasonal box with collections except for fall. That’s the only time I want all the fall colors. I also feel like if I put a polish on and I don’t like it after an hour or I feel like I owe it to the polish to give it 24 hours unless it’s on my toes. I wore a polish for a week on my toes that I could not stand just because I refuse to paint my toes more then once a week 🤦‍♀️ I have not experienced the oil fingerprints thankfully but I can understand your frustration. The other pet peeve I have is those people durning summer time that either don’t paint their toe nails or it’s chipped or worse have t-Rex toe nails with open toe shoes 😂 I just can’t handle it

I was having some medical issues with my toes and feet last summer, and I wore those little mini socks and sneakers all summer because I didn't want to offend anyone (or myself!) by showing ugly dragon feet. The dry, silvery skin on people's heels is MOST offensive!!

Years ago favorite lazy thing to do about a chipped nail was just add a crackle polish over it. Problem solved, laziness in tact. 👍🏿

The thing that made me finally unfollow the Mooncat and Holo Taco Facebook groups was *multiple* posts that were basically "here's a picture of an existing (probably less expensive) polish that this other brand made.. what Mooncat/HT polish is the closest to it so I can buy that instead?" out of some effed up sense of... brand loyalty? or something? Sheesh. I'm still in the groups so I can look through stuff when I want to but seeing the stans every day in my news feed was draining my sanity, lol.

A pet peeve of mine is when nail polish names have cuss words-- I know it might be fun for some but for me it's kind of a deterrent since it just seems like the creator's just trying to be edgy and the name kinda takes away from the polish. It's fine to be edgy,but if someone happens to ask what polish I'm wearing, I don't want to cuss them out 😅

I love these takes. I understand ppu thing 😅🫶 and I’m a swatcher for many ppu brands. I’m personally doing what I can (upgrading my studio lighting and photography skills to better studio light that more accurately capture a polish) to help with the issues you mentioned but at the end of the day it comes down to the individual brands with polish pickup and how they choose to represent their polishes. I’ve noticed some brands have started making changes to help with these misunderstandings and misrepresentation but as a newer swatcher I’m not all that knowledgeable of the inner workings of the indie maker world, and I hope more brands and polish pickup can make these changes to help properly represent their products. 🫶

The BIGGEST pet peeve I have every single KZbinr does! I watch you, Caitlin, Kelly Marissa, Brandy, Laurie, and several more. No one says this right! Since we are now in Daylight Savings Time, when a collection releases, you should say “this collection will release at 7pm Eastern DAYLIGHT time!” However, in November when daylight savings time ends and we go back to Standard Time, then you say “this collection will release at 7pm Eastern STANDARD time.” So every KZbinr thinks the world stays in Standard time?! Of course they don’t! It’s important to say it right because states like Arizona and Hawaii, and several countries around the world do NOT observe Daylight Savings Time and are always in Standard Time. Correct information matters. Thanks!!!
