Don't forget the stern gland, it needs to be twisted a few times to keep forcing grease around where the prop comes into the boat and that stops water leaking in.

Having a slight panic attack for you, we all have to start somewhere, would be helpful if someone could help you with the first few locks, wish we lived closer to you, keep clear of the lock ‘Cill’ looks like a step should be a line that the boat has to be over before going down the lock…. don’t forget to check your oil, water, filters & fuel & secure your batteries before setting off. You will pick it up pretty fast and there will be no stopping you!!!

I definitely recommend paneling up that hole through to the interior of the boat from the engine bay. That is definitely not supposed to be there and can lead to carbon monoxide and other emissions getting into the occupied part of the boat. Good luck sorting your boat!

The handle for locks is called a windlass and you have to have your own. Some locks also need keys which you have to get from canal and river trust who manage the waterways. You can hire people who move boats this will be safer if you aren't a practical person .... locks can be dangerous.

Oh f me. I just got done with my comment of a book in epic proportion and one of my dogs jumped on me, my phone wobbled and now it is gone. Crap. Okay lets see if I can get a shorter version together on helpful stuff you may have not thought of. On your keys, make sure you have those bobbles on em, so that they float on the water& dont sink. They are a life saver and are pretty cheap to buy. You need a plank, a pole, mooring pins, chains, a windlass and the CRT (Canal and River Trust) keys for swing bridges. Make sure you got your paperwork handy. Insurance, CRT form displayed in the window, your BSS is current etc. Fill up your tanks (water, Diesel, gas), empty trash, toilet etc. Have a drink water grade hose with various connectors as they don't all take the same one, plus extras, cause some will be left, or lost. Make sure you have an extra Drink Water graded container (with those tablets keeping your water from going stale in them), just in case. You need to know how to lower your scratch/crotch cover of your boat. See if you can find out who made it, contact em for instructions, if you don't know how to do it without breaking it. You may need some WD 40 to ensure the knees of the cover move easily. Also you will need to remove any large boxes etc from the top of your roof. The bridges are pretty low & will often take out your chimney & trust me Bridges don't care and will always win the fight. Buy some diapers for oil spills in your engine room. If you can have a small pump, or a way to remove water as well you will be thankful if you need it. Turn your stern glands regularly and make sure you have grease for it. I assume that may be how the water got in. Pls make sure you check your oil, and all fluids before and after every cruise. If that crotch cover isn't water proof, it may be that the channels that run under the board that cover your engine are dirty and plugged up, and are not allowing the water to run off properly. The YT channel the Narrowboat electrician is very good. Contact him, if he has no time to check your electrical system, ask him who he would recommend. Many need some time to schedule you in. But it is better to get a health check up for your boat, before you set off. This way you know ahead of time if you are facing any high upcoming bills (battery replacement cost for example), and how to Baby your system along, til you have the money again to fix it. It means the difference between being stranded somewhere & not even being able to charge your phone & knowing ahead of time the challenges you are facing & not being for example unnecessary wasteful with lights etc at night. In case your system isn't healthy or has some charging issues. You will need to keep an eye from here on out on your Battery charge, Water levels, etc. Most ppl need to run their engine an hour or so per day if they aren't traveling and esp if it is cloudy or raining (if you have solar). If you have a compressor make sure you have what you need for it. Cause they don't run with air. So you need some gasoline or some. Pls do a search on YT, google and the CRT website and potentially even places who rent boats, to find the info material and videos on how to be a single boat operator, how to work locks & tie your boat up while a lock fills, the dangers etcetera. Also pls learn some knots, and how to tie your boat up for storms or rising water. More below my comment
@BellaTrix0707

You will need a center line that you should keep close to you (meaning unroll it and lay it towards you on the roof) while you operate your boat. So when you jump on land, you have the center line rope in hand, ensuring you can pull the boat in. I am sure there are videos on how to free your boat if it ever gets stuck (with that long round pole I mentioned you need)& how to set mooring pins properly. You will need a hammer to drive the pins in. And it is nice if you paint a few cans in bright waterproof colors, setting them over the pins so people dont fall over them. If you have a lock close by, ask if someone from your Marina office is willing to travel /help you through it, or a boater that has recently arrived with their boat. That way it isn't as nail biting for you. You could also ask a nearby boat rental place if you could watch their training video they have available and make ppl who plan on renting their boats watch. Unless you ask ppl, you will never know. The worst people can say is: no. No biggie, just ask someone else. SM & Apps will be your friend. Places like F/B, Telegra*m and What*App groups can be a godsend for a new boater. Look at posts with high responses. Look at the time of day& day of the week they posted. Emulate their post to ensure a higher rate of responses to your posts. Check with YT channels that have had their fair share of issues with their boats. Contact them, ask em for trades people they can recommend. Keep this list handy. YT channels such as: The Boat life, the Pirate (Lady) Channel, the Taylor's channel, they all have needed outside help to fix issues. Sorry, but I am no good with names, I am sure you know who I am talking about. When was the last time your boat had an oil & fluid and filter change? If you do not know, then it has been too long. You can always write with a permanent marker on your filter the day it was changed. It makes it easier knowing when the next time is. So between filling everything up, (I think I mentioned Diesel, Water, Gas) And empty everything & toss stuff out you dont need .. its again, I cant streas this enough to make sure you change everything, so all the fluids can do the best job they were designed to do. Esp since your engine hasnt seen much action. Clean everything, stock up on everything as well. I always say keep a bundle of wood, a bag of coal and one of those cheap bbq grills on hand. Generally speaking breakdowns never happen when it is convenient. They happen when one is short on water, low on gas, and a full shitt*r & one is miles away from the nearest place. Pls also check your fire extinguisher and blanket. A drink water filter (even one that only filters 1 L at a time) ensures consistent good quality water for your dog and your tea or coffee. Make sure your horn and navi lights work. Also some great mud-resistant boots, and have something to cart your groceries and laundry on/with, and even your cassette if you have that type of toilet. Next make sure you have a decent map app of the water ways, or the books for the canals and rivers you plan on navigating. As well as which routes you want to travel. Make sure you check regularly or get informed on upcoming or current closures, that may hinder your progress. Check also if there are any places along the way where other boaters say you shouldn't moor at (either due to break ins, stuff stolen from boats or unfriendly people nearby). Make sure you have a tie down for your dog, for lazy days or a long leash so he can run around a bit. Food for wild life is good to keep on hand, just be warned they may annoy you wanting more or come back every day & often arent super friendly in asking for it on their 2nd visit. They know you will be there a while. Hahaha. Get any doc check up done before you set off, incl dog doctor and any shots for your dog. Make sure you know who accepts packages or is willing to accept packages along the way you travel, so you can get packages easily.. Dont forget to forward your mail to a family member or friends house. Wash your clothes before setting off. If you plan on filming while you travel set up your cameras before and check on different camera angles etc, so you wont have to think about it while you are a bit nervous in the beginning. A decent microphone is a must due to engine noises. It also helps a lil when you got someone (even if its just the camera) to talk to (besides your dog), even if no one ever sees the footage. If it helps your nerves -do it. Many small cameras dont cost a lot and are amazing at recording B roll (filler footage). Plus plenty of them come with extras like waterproof cases (Go pros for example). You can also check and contact diff companies if they want to collaborate with you. Your channel may still be small, but its nice if you can get, for example: a security system, or proper WiFi etc for free plus a lil money to live on. And dont let comments who complain about this, get you down. We all got bills to pay. No shame in it (and btw I say this despite paying for YT, so I can avoid advertising as much as possible). But in-ads done by ppl I watch, to help em pay their bills, I usually let run, unless they got like 2 Million followers. More in the next comment. (yt for some reason had an issue with my comment tonight)

Last and least for now (if I remember more I add an extra comment under this one) Have a blast. Enjoy, this is a new adventure! Embrace it! Being nervous and feeling maybe a bit sick, is natural. That is what will keep you on your toes. Dont worry about making mistakes. It's how we all learn. We can't get better or proficient without them. I can't wait for future uploads. I will still recommend (no matter how much you want to go against an algorithm set by AI and YT & dont believe anyone but yourself), that you need a separate channel from the history one. A Narrowboat cruising one. Even your lil added in-stuff inside your videos, wont change it. It simply wont be pushed out to people. No one beside who is already subscribed to you now, will see the videos. AI doesnt care, that you think you will "be special" or proof to YT that it is possible to have multiple channels combined in one. You can't win against the algorithm that is set that way. It wouldnt matter if thousands of channels suddenly did this. It is set, it is how YT works. Pls & for the love of all that you put into creating your content and for the future success of your channel/s.. you saw the numbers drop off yourself. Pls create an additional channel. You can always promote the "other channel" in any video you post, no matter what channel you post on. It just keeps the subject separate, kinda like how it's in school. Plus, you will gain new people and more people will be able to find you. Esp. if you add meta tags / hashtags asf. Anyways take good care! I am very happy for your new exciting journey ahead. Even if you do this, just to move to a diff City to ensure you will have better job prospects. (I dont know) Oh I jist remembered, check out the naughty Narrow Boat channel. The guy just started traveling recently as well& he seems really nice. Ask him if he has any advice for you, how to make it through the first few nail-biting days?! Hugs to your dog. Til soon :)

I know I recommended these books before.. the 12 volt Bible for boats (used cause its an old book) And the Boat Owners Mechanical and Electrical Manual are incredible books to own. Not sure if they have a newer one than the 4th Edition. They will help you be able to learn about your boat & any issues that you may face will make you more confident in knowing what is wrong, and needed to fix it.
