haha i've watched so many natural hair journey's as a white female and they are all fascinating. I learned a lot about how hair works and different types too that helped me with my own hair! One thing about the "western/eurocentric beauty standard" is it doesn't even include all western/european people. its like one very very narrow standard. The hairstyles and maintenance are basically only for thin, straight, medium porosity hair. So I am super appreciative of black women for doing the work they've done to teach us about all different hair types.

CaptainTAE but here is the thing though, her ends are really long so if she cut them off it's going to be hard to work with, so she might as well grow it out and cut the ends, it's not like her hair from the roots is going to turn straight because of her ends.

Hey Nia, when I was going through the same process two years ago, I cut my hair myself at home. This may seem very scary but your hair will grow way faster once you cut off all the straight bit. I personally transitioned until I was comfortable with cutting the straight bits off so if you decide to do the same twist outs, braid outs, Bantu knots, perm rods, etc can camouflage the straight bits and let you rock a curly look until your natural curls are long enough and you’re comfortable. Deep conditioner is your FRIEND when detangling transitioning hair. Also your straight bits may be more porous than your curly hair at the top because of damage so def do protein treatments at least once a month. Good luck Nia!! 💕

Hi Nia! Natural hair takes time to learn how to work with and that’s okay! I recommend applying products on soaking wet hair so it moisturizes it. Using a microfiber towel is essential for a curly girl to reduce frizz and breakage so if you don’t have one I recommend that. Great product selection but I found Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie and curl milk were best during my transition. Also watching you tubers like @biancarenee can help, she’s awesome. Hope to see your wonderful curls flourish one day!

One thing that grew my natural hair after it being the same length for over a year was knowing my hair porosity! I was so confused on why my hair didn't like the same products that natural youtubers with my same curl pattern had and I realized it was because different hair porosities take in and retain moisture differently.

How do you find out what your hair porosity is?
@tiff3994 жыл бұрын
Jellicious11 an easy test you can do is pluck a strand of your hair and put it in a glass of water. high porosity=strand sinks to the bottom. medium=hair strand suspends in the water. low porosity=strand stays on top of the water.
@tiff3994 жыл бұрын

What are braid out or twist outs I may try them
@bo23564 жыл бұрын
@@sierrawarren843 Braid outs and twist outs are protective styles for natural and transitioning hair. Literally the meaning is in the name. Braids out is when you section your hair and braid each section (like a 3-strands). Twist outs include twisting sections on your hair (2 strands). Before you even do these techniques, it's very important to do the LOC/LCO method while detangling with a wide-tooth comb, denam brush, and etc. LOC stands for Liquid, OIl, and Cream while LCO stands for LIquid, Cream, OIl (I use the LCO because oil is a sealant so its logical why it should be the last step in moistruzing your hair after washing it). By liquid, I mean water simply water. Some people have suggested using diff waters depending on where you live and the temperature there. For Cream, it can include a leave-in conditioner, a cream moisturizer, and etc. For Oil, it means olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, and etc. After you apply all these three for each section, then you can braid or twist it. Then after that you cover your hair with a bonnet or a silk scarf and you can sleep on it overnight (what I do) or some people wait for a few hours and take the down. Twist outs, flat twists, braid outs, and etc are important! My hair gets tangled if just left out like that so its a bonus that I get to do the LCO method and then twist it and keep it protected. Lastly, you can even keep these twists/braids out for a whole week (I've done that) because some people don't like constantly doing this everyday. Sorry one more: Don't forget to re-moisturize your hair after wash day! By that I mean, just because you fully wash your hair on a Sunday doesn't mean wait till next Sunday to get moisture in your hair again. Every 2-3 days, do the LCO/LOC method and re-braid or re-twist then the cycle continues :) Hope this helped xx

Aw, I love how you’re trying to regrow your natural hair!! Some tips from me to you ❤️: 1. Create a healthy routine and be consistent with it. You’re already almost there. Pick a wash day (mine is every 2 weeks) and shampoo your hair, followed by a deep conditioner. Then you want to put your hair in a protective style! My go to is always a braid out! After I rinse out my deep conditioner, I go straight in with a leave in, followed by a twisting creme. And then you always want to SEAL that moisture in. I use african shea butter that I melt and it leaves my hair moistured for WEEKS. Then I just braid my hair! And take them down and wear my braids out. It’s easy, consistent, and keeps my hands out of my hair. 2. For your dead ends, I would recommend a protein treatment. I know aphogee is really good and you can get your mom to help you with it. Im not sure if you wanting to cut them off, but if you’re not ready to just yet, that is completely ok! Putting your hair in box braids to grow your hair out some more before cutting it is a good way to keep your hair healthy! 3. It looks like you have type 4 hair. I would look up girls on KZbin with similar hair as you and see what kinds of products they use and how they take care of their hair. If you want to do like a braid out/twist out, look up twist out on type 4 hair. KZbin has a lot of videos that help 4. Lastly I just want to share some cheap products I like to use on my hair. For deep conditioners, I really like african pride heat activating masque or carols daughter rassoul clay mask. For leave in, my go to as of now is african pride moisture miracle leave in. For twisting creme, I really like creme of nature pure honey. For a sealant, like i said, I really like african shea butter. I just melt it and put it in my hair. But some other good sealants are grapeseed oil or castor oil Hope this helps. Good luck on your journey!

Hey Nia, the Shea moisture deep conditioner you’ve chosen is good, you can use it with Jamaican black castor oil. Once you’ve cut your straight ends off, use the oil predominantly on the ends of your hair. You can also use it to massage into your scalp to stimulate further growth. Don’t use pillow soft curls, and those sorts of light leave in conditioners. You have beautiful Afro curls which need something thicker and yummier. Try Shea Moisture curl enhancing smoothie or LottaBody leave in (very cheap) or Creme of Nature’s leave in (can’t remember the name but it’s orange), or Maui Moisture Curl Quench. The braids are a good choice, be sure to still moisturise your hair when you have them in, and don’t keep them in too long. When your hair is tired of them, you’ll know when to take them out (6 weeks is usually the max, I can only handle 2 😂). Congratulations for getting into UCLA, smart girl. You have been through so much, but look at you now. Shining like the star everyone’s always seen you for! (Dance Moms fan here lol). You are a credit to yourself and your mom. We are all very proud of you! May God bless you more each day. P.S. my hair used to be short but it’s now hip length and my hair texture is just like yours (pre-damage). You can do this girl!

Nia Sioux of course! ☺️😁 Also, once you’ve cut your hair, keep the ends of your hair well sealed going forward. You can do this by applying an oil/a heavy butter (which ever works for you). Keep the ends of your hair tucked away the majority of the time and don’t wear it out often to where it brushes on your clothes. Your hair is oldest at the ends, so you have to baby them 💛

I'm been on this journey for about a year now and got some tips: I recommend getting the demnan brush rather than the cantu brush because the cantu brush is much wider and literally breaks my hair while the denman doesn't. But it is still that shape to define your curls and stuff. A wide-tooth comb is your detangling best friend. Always deep condition especially if you have low porosity hair like me. You need to test your hair and it's porosity. Lastly, Shea Moisture is the way to go. I was also glad you didn't pull out some deva curl products from your bag.

tips from when i was transitioning from heat damage: twist out and braid outs were my best friends, but i noticed that my straight ends still showed through. as a fix, i bought a few packs of perm rods from the beauty supply store and each time i did a twist out or braid out i’d wrap my ends around them and it helped blend them in and make them look uniform. i highly recommend them 🥰 i also recently invested in a hooded dryer to cut back on my drying time because my type 4 hair takes forever to dry, and twist outs usually frizz on me if my hair isn’t 100% dry. i recommend figuring out your hair’s porosity to determine how best to moisturize it. mine is low porosity, and so if i’m not applying products with some form of steam or hot water, they don’t penetrate my hair shaft as well. google “porosity tests” to look into it more if you’re interested. good luck!!! 💕

I see a lot of comments saying cut it off but don’t if ur not ready. I did mini chops throughout mine transition bc that is what I was comfortable with. Braids out and twists helped a lot. Get to know your hair more before you chop it all off is my best suggestions (which it seems like you are doing). I wish there was more ppl like you willing to show there natural hair journey ❤️

I love that you're going on a healthy hair journey!! Some tips from someone who transitioned years ago: 1. Cut out the heat, do styles like twist outs, flexi rod sets, braid outs, etc. 2. Do the big chop(cut off dead ends) or transition for a few months until your new growth is long then cut off the ends. 3. Try some natural hair brands like shea moisture, camille rose, or design essentials 4. Deep condition once a week Good luck!

I started my natural hair journey when I was 12 years old and I’m 16 now and one of the most important things I learned through the years is always style your hair when it is completely detangled and basically soaking wet. When you start your natural hair journey you should try lots of different products from all different types of brands to see what products will truly work for your hair. Those are the two most helpful tips I ever got while first starting my hair journey and I hope they help you.

HEY NIA! I’m a huge fan of yours and have watched you grow up so much! And I’m so proud that you are now learning to care for your hair because as a curly hair girl myself, it ain’t easy.. at all! Just giving you some tips and trust me, I’ve watched about a million curly hair videos. Some tips I would say is to cut off your dead ends. Once you cut them off, the growth process will go so much faster! Next, find your hair porosity. It’ll help you know a lot more about your hair. Also, I would get into oils. Some goods oils are Jamaican Black Castor oil, coconut oil, and more! They all promote shine and hair growth. Other things I suggest is keep your hair protected and left alone. Hair works best when you let it do it’s own thing. Don’t get me wrong, I do crazy hairstyles all the time but I would say, every once in a while, moisturize it and keep it in a twist! As far as deep conditioning goes, make sure when you deep condition, your hair is SOAKING wet! That way you save product and really soak in the water. Lastly, trust the process! Don’t stress if your hair don’t start to grow immediately, it’s okay ❤️ I BELIEVE IN YOU AND REALLY HOPE U TAKE ALL THESE INTO CONSIDERATION! I know I wrote a ton but it’s useful in the end. Search up KZbin videos about things like deep conditioning, oils for hair growth, and Hair porosity (FIND OUT YOUR HAIR POROSITY NOW BECAUSE I PROMISE ITS HELPFUL). Anyway, love you Nia and wish you best of luck on your hair journey! ❤️❤️❤️

I didn't see anyone say anything in the comments. I would recommend when sectioning your hair start with your middle part, then go from behind your ears to the top of your head. It makes things easier to manage when putting in products. I would also recommend using the Cantu kids curling cream, and I do mean the kids version. I always find it gives a better hold than regular Cantu. Its a thick product and exactly what I used when I was transitioning a few years ago (can't lie still use it daily in my life) it moisturizes hair very well and helps define the curls.

She doesn’t have to cut off the straight ends right now, she can let her hair grow out more & then cut them off.
@ghenellejames27734 жыл бұрын
Tip when I was going back natural I chopped of my straight ends after a huge portion of my hair grew back curly. So how your hair is getting back to it's natural curls whenever quarantine is over you should ask your hair dresser to chop your ends because it would not go curly. Also don't blow dry your hair leave it to air dry. By blow drying it all your natural hair moisture would be removed leaving it dry and short

Hi Nia. I wanna give you some info for your continuation of your natural hair journey. First of all, you need to find a detangling brush. The brush you were using is styling brush and should not be used to detangle your hair because it can cause breakage and it hurts. Also, the four sections are great. This allows you to be able to better manage your hair and be able to apply the product to each strand. I see that you are tired of your damaged ends and want to get rid of them. You can just cut them yourself if your are up to it. If not then you can transition. This is when you let all your natural hair grow long enough until you want to get rid of the damaged ends. Also, you could just go in once every month or two and cut your ends. You will not be able to really see your curl pattern because those ends are weighing down your hair. I would like to direct you to Natural Reign, IAMTRAEH and Jasmine Brown. They are natural hair influencers who have similar hair textures to your hair. There are other KZbinrs but that is too much typing 😂😂. I wish you luck with your natural hair journey. From one natural to another ❤ P.S. CONGRATS ON GETTING INTO UCLA!!! WISH YOU ALL THE BEST.

I know how you feel Nia, I've been wearing braids , crochet , weaves pretty much all my life. When This quarrentine started I decided to go natural and this is the perfect time to go through that awkward phase of your hair growing out. I told myself I'd only be doing this for a week but it's been 3 weeks and my hair has grown so much and just feels better. For curl definition I definitely recommend the Aunt Jackie's Curl boss gel it's amazing. Anyways good luck in your hair journey Nia!!!

Nia my hair is also the same since I stopped Competition dance. What I have been doing is Washing my hair 1-2 times a week and then doing braid/twists outs and experimenting with different ways i might like to do to my hair while its recovering. Also before I would wash my hair i put coconut oil in it for about 10-15 minutes then wash with shampoo and conditioner. Im still doing this and continuing to do this even when my hair revives completely. I also plan on only straightening my hair one to two times a year. Hopefully this helps you and I cant wait to see the results of your hair journey. Love you ❤️

Been natural my whole life and it seems like we have similar textured hair so I’ll share what’s working for me in hopes it works for you! Since we’re in quarantine this is the perfect time to heal ur hair. 1. Wash and deep condition 2. Prepare a batch of warm olive oil 3. Prepare a spray bottle of green tea/or matcha 4. Separate hair in sections and apply green tea and warm olive oil and leave in conditioner/moisturizer of choice 5. Braid the hair, wrap it in a silk scarf and leave it alone The best thing for natural hair is good creams, warm oil (or water to open the cuticles) and low manipulation styles!

I've noticed that with a lot of hair products they have different smells to them. Different brands have a couple of different smells that come in all forms of hair care products. So if you're using two different brands you may want to get the same smells eg. Coconut, mango, in both brands.

Getting recommendations is a great start but you will soon learn that some products don’t help hydrate your hair like they do for others or it doesn’t help like it does for others. Your hair could do great with Cantu products but one day it could stop helping as much and that’s because your hair is constantly changing.Test out products here and there and use oils like jojoba, coconut, argon, etc. Testing different products is fun but frustrating lol. Good luck on your hair journey!
