I love how confident makisi is w/ herself, and I hope this confidence stays w/ her because loving yourself and being happy w/ the skin you're in is a great feeling. She has a good voice to, and w/ some work she'll be really great.

+Rvyna I think what helps is she was born in Liberia (where she has a strong foundation) instead of Korea to Liberian parents. Those who are born to a Korean and race of a darker skin seem to have such a hard time with identity.

+Cherish Adventure True but even those who are born in African and stay in Africa lose their confidence in their skin colour, bleaching is everywhere because of the most mainstream media (Europe&America)). This girl is a powerful being, i wish i was like that when i came to England, i only learned to love my brown skin colour 5 years ago. I am already 22.

Angolana Keep loving yourself, you wouldn't be here if you weren't worthy of being loved. Will never understand why a mother will do that to her daughter, then send her out into the world. It never makes her stronger, but set her up to attract people who will treat her badly and she will accept it, because her mother treats her like she doesn't deserve better.

Instead of helping the family survive in Korea, Vivian is more of a dead weight that needs to be offloaded back to Liberia soon. If she's not working yet, she could help clean up their apartment rather than wait for Makisi to do it. No wonder Amiata is more stressed than ever trying to support all of them. Makisi is such a sweetheart .

+preettyE I think she feels overwhelmed because she can't speak Korean and it's hard to get a job without Korean. If I may give a suggestion to the family, I think Vivian needs to step up and take care of the baby and clean the house and cook. Let the schoolgirl go to school, and the mother to go out there and work to bring the money needed to feed the family. In the meanwhile, Vivian can start learning Korean from home, by self teaching on the internet. This should be at least until the baby grows up a bit. However, there's a danger that Vivian can get isolated and slack off on learning Korean. But at this point, I don't think the family has very many options here. The Korean government do not give out welfare to low income families unless there's disability or old age involved. Looking at Vivian, I think that's not really a bad thing, because it encourages poor people to go out there and work, instead of sitting at home and living off of tax payer funded welfare checks.

Here’s the thing, if Vivian is unable to work due to the language barrier…then she should definitely help around the house. And the fact that she barely tries to learn is unacceptable. She can’t expect the mother to forever pay the bills and take care of her. The mother is already under so much stress, Vivian needs to step up and independently do something to help the household. Yes she was helping out in selling the socks but that’s not enough to pay the bills. Its unfair for the daughter to go to school, take care of baby and do the chores mainly by herself. Vivian needs to do at least half of the chores if she’s gonna stay the way that she is. The mother on the other hand is doing a good job. She’s constantly trying to find work and be a good mum to her children. I hope Vivian improves on her Hangul and pushes herself to work harder.

Makisi is the cutest person ever. I am especially proud of her confidence. It's admirable. What I don't understand though is the mother. I'm Black and I think it's just really common with almost all Black cultures, but children are considered less than their parents. We are very rarely shown love, and parents will say "I love you" in situations where they have to (they will never randomly do or say something nice, unless it's in front of others or when asked to). Of course I don't know them personally so maybe Amiata is a great mother, but I saw in her what my mother used to be, and what most Black mothers I've met are. I felt for Makisi even more when she said "My mother loves Joseph but not me. What did I do wrong?" The worst is if you doubt the love of your parents, they'll blame you for that, call you ungrateful, etc. They think giving you food, shelter and an education is all they need to do. That's the basics. Looking after your child doesn't make you a good parent. Makes you a decent human being, but we should have be decent human beings. However love, respect and affection does make you a good parent. Ugh. I could go on and on about this so I'll stop now. Anyway. I'll be rooting for you, Makisi. Hope you thrive in Korea :)

@silpae 8 жыл бұрын
Cherish Adventure Exactly. I think we put up with it. Also parents make us believe that without them we're nothing and we're scared of being abandoned. Or beaten until we bleed. Whatever threat they choose. So we say nothing out of fear. I hate that most Black cultures think making your child fear you is a good way to raise them. Because of that personally I still can't love my mother. Can't love someone who has treated me like a dog, has faked her love and has made me fear her through threats and actions that still bother me to this day. I'm glad Makisi has a better heart than me.

I completely understand Makisi. By the time I was 13 I had to look after not one but two kids. & my mom is almost the exact way her's is. Endless housework. She's a good singer, she just needs to calm down and open her mouth. But lol I understand why she was nervous, they asked her to sing on the spot. I would have died. I'm very happy to see that she's proud to be in her own skin. The names those kids called her are probably worse than anything I've ever heard in my life. I really do applaud her.

I feel bad for Amiata. She can't even look for stationary for her daughter without having to question whether it's worth the money or if it is too expensive.

What that girl said about being a baby again..the first time i heard that analogy and it's soo right..you do want to scream and yell and you know that would be immature and you judge yourself for wanting to :/ I'm 30 and i can relate.
