I learned this from you, 5 days before I turn 52, so I guess better late than never as far as the difference between casserole and hotdish, so thank you. I live in MN 95 percent of my life, born in NYC like Andrew, and also like Andrew live in the Twin Cities but unlike him I can't cook and as awesome as he is, I get nauseous watching him eat like bugs. My native Jewish Minnesotan Mom doesn't make hotdish, I was like in my 30's before I tried it and no fruit salad, either but I knew it was a thing as most of my friends when I was younger were Christian and I absolutely love this kind of fruit salad, too. Happy Holidays!!!
@hollyheikkinen4698 Жыл бұрын
I am a lifer Minnesotan & I saw Andrew Z say that too - but that's not necessarily how it works, at least not up here on the Iron Range in Northeastern Minnesota. My Mom rarely made a layered Hotdish. Sure, the original recipes for most casseroles say casserole on it, but most Rangers write Hotdish when they copy the recipe for themselves - or at least everyone I knew when I was growing up in the 1970s & 1980s did. We have entire sections of church cookbooks that are dedicated to Hotdish (there's a few casseroles in titles, but not many). My dad's sisters do actually call it Green Bean Casserole, but that is what the can of soup calls it 😂

Cranberry fluff/salad! I grew up eating it made by my grandma from Green Bay. It's not quite a fruit salad (if/when I have make those, they're mostly just actual chopped fresh fruit with some citrus juice squeezed over it to prevent browning) but cran salad is a MUST! Traditional is to use a tub of CoolWhip, a bag of mini marshmallow, sugar to taste, a can of drained crushed pineapple and 1 bag chopped raw whole cranberries with optional sweetened coconut flakes, pecans, etc. I use freshly beaten whipping cream (whip until peaks form) and/or yogurt (Greek is best for firmer texture- some ppl use mayo and/or cream cheese in a pinch). Then light sugar sometimes even stevia along with pineapple (sometimes fresh depending on price/availability- pineapple canned in own juice without added sugar/corn syrup is fairly healthy). I love cranberries and sometimes stock up to use in smoothies throughout the year (just toss bag in freezer- cranberry production is amazing and very farmer friendly so nice feel good ethical purchase). I forgo coconut unless can find unsweetened which is usually expensive and I'm only one who likes nuts so skip pecans. A little spare cranberry for garnish is cute. Ok so now I'm going to have to make a video of me making mine tonight lol thx

I keep watching this over and over again. It's hysterical. At the end when they're both clapping, it sounds like they're chanting "Holy Spirit Activate".

O. M G!! So my grandma was born in Chicago (Midwest) and would often make this “fruit salad”. It Had canned fruit cocktail, and canned peaches, drain, toss in a bowl with sour cream. No marshmallows. When I was a kid I loved it and when I’d tell my friends about it, even as an adult, there would all eventually say how gross it sounded. I still love it, it’s comfort food. But I always wondered where it came from that no one where I lived (Oregon and NC) every heard of such a thing. This has got to be some version of it! Thank you! 💜

I live in Rhode Island and when she said miracle whip!😳!! I've been a server for 21 years and watching them cut the grapes individually is killing me.

No cap, all midwesterners KNOW that Miracle Whip is “mayo” but also that the two are NOT interchangeable. That one second made me snort laugh.
@honolulublues55483 жыл бұрын
No it isn't. Even Kraft (the makers of Miracle Whip) know it isn't because they also make Mayo. Yes, there are similarities, but finitely are not the same. I grew up in the Midwest and never called Miracle Whip Mayo.

When I moved to western Pennsylvania from north New Jersey, I discovered Ambrosia salad (which is what you two made), Cherry Delight, and Strawberry Pretzel salad. I wasn’t a fan of Ambrosia (Miracle Whip?? My NJ grandmother only had Hellman’s. I didn’t know about Miracle Whip until my PA grandma made me a P&P sandwich…which was another new food). I adored Cherry Delight and Strawberry Pretzel salad.

I think you two making Mississippi Mud cake with the Milky Way Bars would be hilarious. The Midwesterner would admit it's a desert and Kim might think she's going into diabetic coma though.

My family has a Christmas fruit salad that was from my great-grandma's family. It has changed just a little bit, I heard that it originally had like the jelled candy fruit slices but it's a salad served cold so they got a bit hard. And there was also chopped walnuts in it, but that has been changed to having them served on the side so if anyone wanted them they could add them. It is still made with fresh fruit cut up, no canned fruit. Heavy whipping cream and cherry jell-o with regular marshmallows cut into quarters. Mom passed the recipe down to us kids and we have passed it down to our kids. My middle son even included the recipe in his 4-H project Recipe File. He still has it, started it at age 9 and added to it until 18 for the fair. He is mid 20's now and has recipes from both grandmas, which means a lot to him since they have both passed on. Sorry for the ramble, but our family is quite proud of the family Christmas fruit salad 😊 and we are from the Midwest, too 😎 Edited to add that SO's family is German-Russian AKA Rooshin so our family has quite a mix of recipes to choose from. Middle son loves baking Dina Kuchen although his version is not a dense coffee cake type, but a fluffy more cake type that his grandma S. called 'Wyatt's Dina Kuchen' 😉

That salad is great! And yes it's a salad!! Our family adds chopped walnuts to that mixture for a nice crunch here and there.

My mom is from the western state of Idaho, and she still thinks of this kind of fruit salad when she hears fruit salad! She's also a casserole mom, so Idaho must be similar to the Midwest haha 😆 relating to this lady!

I'm about to make orange salad for Thanksgiving! Cottage cheese, orange jello, mandarin oranges, crushed pineapple and cool whip. May have to try some marshmallows this year!

Here in Southern manitoba. This is definitely a salad!! A family gathering is not a family gathering without aunt Connie's "pink stuff". Whip 1L whipping cream with one pk pink(or red) jello powder(yes. Just the powder). Add grapes, banana, orange segments, berries, and whatever other fruit you have on hand. And whatever you do... DONT FORGET THE MARSHMALLOWS! Definitely in the salad bar at the potluck.

Okay this has been at every Lutheran church potluck I've ever been to, along with three bean salad, tater tot casserole, deviled eggs, cheesy scalloped potatoes, some form of baked eggs and multiple noodle casseroles and fruity jello mold. Also that miracle whip salad with the shredded cheese and peas. With KoolAid in styrofoam coffee cups to drink. Yummy memories!

Southern girl living in the UK here and my aunts always made this salad for thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year's, but just a dollop of mayo and also nuts, no cool whip or marshmallows. Other southern relatives made ambrosia as well which had marshmallows I think (though I didn't eat that one because of the coconut.. always smelled divine though). Hilariously I'm literally getting the ingredients on my grocery order for this while I'm watching this because my daughter lamented the lack of "that fruit salad you always make" when we had our Thanksgiving meal.

So, my work had a pot-luck and I was to bring 'whip cream. So I, foolishly, brought a pint of heavy cream, powdered sugar and vanilla, and proceeded to whip, by hand with a whisk, to make 'whipped cream. It took forever, since not chilled enough, and everyone was giving me the eye. One co-worker said I should of gotten 'cool whip'. I had no idea what that was. I looked later, at the grocery store and saw it was not made with any dairy. It's not cream at all. I was so sheltered by a make-from-scratch mom and grandma. There is a whole world of food that's not even real food! Who knew? 😁
