That weed membrane at 4:56 is my worst nightmare. I took on an allotment this year and underneath the grass/overgrown bits was all that membrane. Took forever to get it all out, and I am still finding long strings of black plastic in the soil. People should stop leaving membrane down and reduce plastic use.

Congrats on the new plot! One thing I’ll advise is with bindweed, don’t chop it all up into bits and then leave it as mulch like you said in the video, it’ll produce all new plants even with just an inch of plant left! I personally pull it to get the long vines of it in one chunk and then put in waste bin, not compost (you probably already know that but thought to add just in case sweet)

Good luck with your new plot, back in April last I was involved in a cycle accident, spent a lot of time in pain and lost interest in my allotment because of it but watching your clips inspired me to get back in to it and now my garden is thriving again and so am I so thankyou

You probably know this already but the tree overhanging your new plot from the private house, can be cut back to the fence line if they cause you any problems.

Congrats on the new plot, massive task. Personally i think the ground cover is a blessing. I always advise new plot holders to lay it down and smother the weeds and just pull back where you are working and re-cover until you are ready to plant. You will be surprised how clean the soil will be underneath. The bindweed will be one of your biggest problems. Don’t chop it up! Pull as much out as you can and dispose of it at your local tip. A good strimmer or hire one might be worth while to clear all the top growth and give you a really good idea of the layout of the plot. I am sure there will be a few surprises under all that top growth. Good luck!

Congratulations on your new plot, how exciting! Yes you probably are crazy but we love you for it 😂😂 please don’t take down all the trees, Einstein needs somewhere to shelter from predators. Now you’ve got a bigger area you can think big - asparagus beds, fruit trees and soft fruit cages, wildlife area, things that won’t take so much maintenance but will still provide you with a harvest so it doesn’t become overwhelming. There are lots of plants that love the shade, hydrangeas, fuchsias, begonias, primroses and foxgloves, just to mention a few. I love your enthusiasm. Hello Emma. My opinion. Hire an industrial Brush Cutter, cut everything down to ground level. That way you get an idea what’s there and can start from scratch. Burn the lot if allowed because you don’t know what’s diseased and isn’t.

Congratulations on your new plot! If it’s a council run allotment, then you may be able to reach out to them for support in clearing and removal of all the old green waste. Failing that, burn the lot. Have a big bonfire in the middle and keep feeding it. You could add your blighted tomatoes to it too! Good luck!

I also have 2 plots and it’s been my 4th year.. it’s been hard at first and gradually it’s so wonderful to have a system going in terms of prepping the beds etc. and the best thing is I have so much different types of vegetables and fruit trees in my allotment just because of the extra space. Petrol strimmer is first on list, agree with others regarding the membrane, the soil underneath should be fine. The weed fabric is woven so it lets water through so thr soil wont be dead underneath it will be fine. I use that woven fabric on my beds and i just burn holes through so that the fabric doesnt unravel

Fantastic....will be hard work but I think it will also be good to show the realities of taking on a new plot. Just don't overdo it. Thought (as an early educator) maybe you could let your children have a bed so they can grow their own stuff too (now that you have more space). My boys had a raised bed on my plot and now the eldest is a homeowner he already grows his own....keep that circle going.

We covered up a couple of plots after ph died.. the cover was a bind weed fest but underneath was fine. Let it breathe underneath and the flush of weeds will go mad... cut the tree overhanging if you can ..and it'll be a great time!! Get a hand scythe .. some of the japanese are great... make heaps as you go ...

I was jumping with joy for you Emma, the best way to get rid of bindweed is to coat the leaves with glyphosate, this will take it down to the roots & kill it, when I got a plot it was in July so plenty of time to get it ready for spring, good luck ❤

In the U.S., we either burn the bindweed or bag it up and send it to the dump. It multiplies times 1 million if you compost it. And even worse if you leave it piled on the ground. Also, blackberry canes mean blackberries next year. Please don't dig them up.

Morning, how bloody fabulous. If you can get the membrane cleared of weeds then maybe just remove it where you want your beds and leave the pathways... depends if bramble has got underneath and pushing it up (it's a bugger for it) and that flippin bindweed will carry on growing under it waiting to be exposed to the light. I love you channel and your enthusiasm and being an older member of the allotment community you are a breath of fresh air making me smile everytime I watch. Wow I can't wait to watch the new plot be uncovered and see your plan going forward and wow it will be so much better as you say with no fence down the middle and cut them trees down to have one large plot and why don't you knock at the house with the over growing tree and ask if mind you trimming the branch back by law you can do this if you offer the branch back to the owner but most the time if you offer to cut it down and dispose of it then there more than happy for you to do so as it's free for them

The fox 🦊 poo is marking territory. Lovely big plot should keep you busy and fit! The soil should be ok under the membrane as worms etc are still able to live and aerate the soil. Please keep as many trees 🌳 as possible,you’ll be glad of the shade and wildlife will thrive. Good luck x

You are lucky that you have a start on the allotment when I got mine it was full of brambles and willow trees all over the place still trying to get it all out good luck hope you have better luck then me
