Nope. First job is to clear out the lot of all that. It's an outdated idea that an alotment must look like a council dump with a failed recycling plan. My plot has nothing at all on it. Nothing besides the beds, with a neat grass border, the barn and 1 compost bin hidden discreetly behind the barn. My plot first looked like this when I took it on.

I bought allotment last year and my family and friends saw the state of allotment which was really bad. They told me to gave it up as believed I couldn't do it. I refused to gave up cos I want to push my limits with my vision of allotment. Few tidy up and move about, pick up and destroy weeds. Now this year, building plots and cutting grass all ready for first sowing. My family and friends are surprised that I can do it on my own. 😊 you can keep your dream to come true. ❤

I agree, with such big waiting lists they could just keep passing these plots on from one careful owner to another so they don't degenerate into this, somethings not right here.

Wow! Definitely a lot of work on your plot but it’s totally worth it! I had a lot of rubbish, about a ton of glass and some asbestos too on mine. Large glass sheets all over and also buried deep into the ground along the length of the fence and small pieces everywhere going 50 cm deep into the soil. It took me 3 months of every day work to clean it and about 20 trips of full car boot to the tip. Still finding pieces of glass to this day…

What a project. I took on a plot which was covered in weeds, brambles to above my shoulder height. Once we got rid of the weeds we found a green house so full it it was a cupboard of rubbish. Then we finally cleared that and started to dig it over, whereupon we found bags of buried rubbish and a carpet. Underneath the carpet was very interesting. We found rubbish dating back from WW2. There was also the remains of an air raid shelter. It was such hard work. Don't be disheartened- rubbish removal is not gardening!! It is so worth having an allotment.

Invest in a sheen flamegun and a good quality rotavator. Salvage compost bins etc, but clear the plot of all debris, burn the scrub clear and then you can see what youve got. Rotovate to get the ground even and level, put your paths and infrastructure in, and grow away to your hearts content. Dont compost any of the weed off the plot, burn it, get rid of the bath/pond.

Looks promising. weeds = fertile soil. My plot was just as bad. The first year is best just clearing the rubbish, testing the soil and making a long term plan. With a large plot I covered most of it to suppress weeds at the beginning, working a little bit at a time, double digging to remove perennial weeds and incorporating organic matter. We now have a polytunnel, fruit cage, top fruit area , extensive composting and have moved to a raised bed system (easy to work and manage). Gradually moving to a no-dig method as compost becoming available. Weed killer and covering would have made life easier but I garden organically. Worth the effort-now mostly disease and pest free. We are mostly self-sufficient on veg and the freezers are packed with soft fruit and chopped tomatoes. One tip would be to grow spuds in large buckets as the crop comes out clean and is easier to harvest (you could place this over covered areas in the early years).Home grown tastes so much better!

Tips for composting, whoever needs: Make sure you don't just yolo chuck all the grass and things in your compost bins, you have to get a good balance of green and browns otherwise you will just have a random bin of grass that doesn't do anything (what happens to most people), add in shredded paper and cardboard to increase heat (also counts as browns) as well as coffee grounds. Try and keep it balanced and less of 'this is garden waste so it can go in the compost bin', it does seem counter intuitive sometimes NOT putting the cuttings/grass in the compost, but sometimes you have to in order to keep it composting properly. Keep it as hot as possible and moist (not waterlogged), most peoples composting fails due to it being too dry. If it looks too wet you will need to turn it to dry it out more. You can get compost insanely quickly if you get the right balance.
