So what do you think? Have I made the right decision 🙈
@ninemoonplanetАй бұрын
Probably one of the better decisions. If you can, strim that one area as close to the ground as you can, keep it extremely short over the winter and it should be much less work. The plants will be losing a lot of the root systems. Notice where the winds come from, it helps ensure weaker plants are sheltered more. Get your soil tested. It could be too alkaline or acid, which should give you what amendments you need to put down now to get the PH better. You have the time.

Hi Kerry, My allotment is on the edge of the Chilterns in Hertfordshire and is heavy clay over chalk with enough flint and stones in it for our prehistoric ancestors to knock off every Mammoth in Britain. I have been “no dig” for about ten years ever since I went to a talk given by Charles Dowding and it has transformed my soil. I have just watched an earlier video of yours about planting potatoes in wood chips and although I have not done that I do use wood chips a lot. Our allotment site gets quite a lot of free wood chips from local tree surgeons and I am currently spreading good compost made from wood chips that I put into several of my Dalek style compost bins in Autumn 2023 and then refilling the bins with this year’s donations. As an experiment I have also used a thick layer of wood chips as a mulch on one of my beds and after two years it had broken down to a lovely friable tilth. If you can obtain a free supply it is certainly experimenting with it on your own plot.
@dogontheplot26 күн бұрын
Oh that's so interesting to hear about your longterm experience. Our woodchip supply is very sporadic and honestly the only stuff we've had in the last two years is what I've sourced when I've happened to see a local tree feller and gone and asked if they would like to get rid of it on the allotment. The last lot that we had - the lot I did the potatoes in - was lovely ramial woodchip so great for making into compost. I'm tempted to get a chipper - esp now as the new plots are further away from where deliveries are dropped.

Hi Kerry, you and \mark gave certainly landed on your feet with such a gorgeous plot. So lovely to have the plots as a family too. Will be well social and a motivation gardening together. I have just taken on a new plot and it looks more like your plot did in teh spring before you worked ot. It is so overgrown. I have started by strimming it down and now have it covered on weed membrane. Didn't really like to do that but it seemed the most practical way of getting the soil ready for planting next year. Mind you, I have already put 2 raised beds on the plot as I wanted to feel like I was growing something, lol. Happy growing 🙂

Oh it is so motivating to have a friend allotment next to you - we've been moving the plots down this weekend and it's so much nicer having someone to do that with! Best of luck with your new plot. Yes, I still want to garden no dig but I might rethink exactly how I'm doing that for the new plot. I think putting on so much grass clippings and rabbit bedding did the old plot a lot of good, but also encouraged a lot of weeds - so might hot compost those first before adding on this time round.

@Gemsurbangarden29 күн бұрын
@ ahh yeah dilemma but I agree, it would be a shame if it weren’t used to the max. Maybe it would fit on one of the front beds or across two of them at the front of the plot, shift the paving stones a little bit to have a path in the middle with growing on either side and the back? I am going to try luffas this year 🤞🏻 I hadn’t thought about doing them in the greenhouse, what a great idea! Ill do some research ☺️ Maybe your sister could get a small poly tunnel instead 😊 or someone may kindly gift her a little greenhouse 🤞🏻
@dogontheplot26 күн бұрын
Mark has 3 (or is it 4??) greenhouses in their garden so if she wants a greenhouse on her plot she can have one of those! The trouble with the front of the plot is that it is sloped and we're not supposed to have big structures less than a metre from the edges of the plot.

This is beyond exciting! The well-developed soil, the slabs, the poly - I cannot wait to see how you work it next season. Ooh, and the strawberries! They may need some tidying, but after that you have berries enough for a factory 😅 Some unsolicited advice: I’d work the bed over time to become a «proper» strawberry bed, and clear out the raised beds. You are a great story-teller, had me hanging on to your every word when you shared how it all came about 😊 And very smart, sharing it like you have. It would be devastating to lose a part if someone needed out for some reason. But you have to let us know, is Mark a glutton for punishment? Or just an all-around nice guy? The overgrown plot looks punishing to work up for flowers 🌼🌸🌹
@dogontheplotАй бұрын
Ah what a lovely message!! Bless you. To answer your last question - I honestly do not know what Mark is thinking!! And my sister will want it to be perfect and easy - he's gong to have so much work to do!! He does enjoy a project. I think if it turns out to be too much we can just pass it back and the committee will prob just be happy it's not still all overgrown. BUT what's more likely to happen is (and we already have the go ahead if this happens) - the person who has the back part that is covered in plastic will go and then Mark will take on that back part as well!!!! Good call on the strawberry bed. I think I'll do that 👍

You have 100% made the right decision! So exciting! Don't know if you ever watch Hue Richard but he interviewed a guy called Joshua Sparkes and he was talking about natural farming works for him but encouraging beetles which feed on slugs amongst other things. So interesting. But the modern way of getting rid of slugs is why we don't see as many of the good insects as the chemicals I'm the soil deter them leaving slugs with free rein . Anyway maybe worth a listen whilst your busy doing other jobs. Have a great week x

What do you think you’ll do? I’d dig out the aspargus after harvest in the spring, add hügel, soil and sand almost to the top of the bed. Then replant and add more aspargus plants. I have such great experience with filling raised bed with a lot of hügel and soil that I recommend it to everyone 💕
