It’s been now 11 days since Davy joined my household and I’ve been reflecting on this time, what’s going well and what’s a work in progress. I don’t have any expectation of him being trained yet, rather I’m pleased with all the things that are going well, so let’s start with that:
What’s going well?
· Sleeping through the night - check!
· Potty training - acing it!
· Gained 2 lb - good!
· Coming when called
· Settling in the house -boundary games training works like a charm! Not sure why I’m so surprised how quickly he’s catching on, LOL!
· No more need of the visual barrier in front of his crate in the evening and a lot less crating due to over-excitement (the witching hour is real)!
· Puppies are typically very busy but they can learn to be calm in the house... long before they reach 2 years of age!
· Fitting in with my gang - they are starting to see him as more than a nuisance
· Spending time in the dog run with the other dogs - I get little breaks while he’s having fun!
· Loves to play with me and learn stuff - always nice to see in a pup!
· First walk on leash in town was a success - pretty much a non-event, just the way I like it!
· I love his drive for food and toys - always nice to see in a pup!
What’s a work in progress?
· Chewing on MY things
· Mouthing me & my pant legs
The only thing that has decreased from when he first came to live with me is snuggle time as he’s all about mouthing me and my clothes... so I’m not even trying that right now. “This too shall pass” is the mantra of every puppy owner ... or at least it should be.
Bottom line: the positive by far outweighs the rest of it ... having a plan with how to deal with XZY and being proactive in my training approach makes raising yet another puppy a lot easier than it could be! I’m looking forward to him growing and growing up as there are so many things I want to teach him, experience with him.
I’m super excited to continue Davy’s Puppy Diary in my membership program, so other puppy owners can get guidance and support for raising their own puppies... kind of a “How to raise a confident, well behaved puppy” manual.
There will be lots and lots of training videos showing Davy learning about Recalls, Impulse Control, Confidence Games, Toy Play, and all the fun stuff I like to do with my puppies!!!
