I don’t normally comment but, what if you built it in an old potion bottle? A little boat that has potion of storm giant strength doing knock-back, able to yeet anyone who grabs it. Be hilarious as heck. A Blood Elemental creepy version of this inside a potion of dragonbreath would be dope. Instead of a model ship it’s a model of a dragon turtle with a tiny red steam breath. You could even do this with a black pudding or something like that instead of a water spirit. A model kracken one that shoots ink that is just the darkness spell. So many fun and playful options.

Honestly Ship should be an enemy type, not crewed by alive or undead, not by anything bound to it, just a ship that has a will of it's own and decides to do what it wants. (Is that technically a golem or other type of construct?) As for Plot Ideas: In the middle of a vast desert there is a oasis that is the only hope for travelers, and the water spirit that is there wants to leave so it askes the party for a Ship-In-The-Bottle to get them out and to another water source, but given that will end the oasis many of the travelers and nomadic people rely on the oasis they decide to chase after the "Greedy" party who have "Stolen" the "Sacred" water spirit.

Spirit starts to harass the captain, but due to his high charisma, he tells the ship something to the effect of "You're my ship, and you'll be doing MY orders!" and the spirit obeyed. Over the years, they developed a friendship and became almost inseparable. Fast forward to today. Captain gives the adventurers a quest: "Someone stole my bottled ship. It's very dear to me, so if you track the thief down and bring it back, I'll pay you handsomely." Now, imagine the faces of the players when their characters track the thief's lair, open a cabinet, find the ship, and then the said ship starts yelling at them that they'll never take it alive.

I was expecting this to be this whole encounter where the party breaks a bottled ship and the water spills out and there's this whole Jumanji/Alice in Wonderland sea of tears moment where there was waay too much water in the bottle and the ship spills out and starts growing and the only way to avoid drowning is to board the ship which drifts on the ocean for days until one night mists roll in and a fleet of ghostly pirate ships attacks the players and they win but a storm sends everything into the depths and they wake up on a beach shore with this huge glass wall and they can see the room where they found the ship but HUGE outside and somehow they get out and there's probably a chest of gold or something. i feel like the shattering glass effect should be fully controlled by the type of attack hitting it. bludgeon glass shatters completely. slashing the glass bottles can split it but not shatter it. piericng will shatter it but not completely. fire damage should melt the bottle onto the ship making the ship sturdier. lightning should do the same. acid should dissolve and not melt bottle to the ship. necrotic and radiant won't damage the bottle. force is the same as bludgeon. i think i'm missing some damage types. the glass also might act as a 1 time damage shield against especially weak hits on it.

I once ran a short Pathfinder adventure in a Lich's lair. It was full of hauntings, a mansion upstairs and dungeon downstairs, all in its own pocket dimension. The party got to the end of the downstairs and the round room became a whirlpool (adding in some players from a parralel seafaring campaign) and being deposited in a room of the same shape with shelves covered in bottles with ships on them - one of them matching the haunted ship the second party had just been aboard. They were supposed to inspect and move on, but I had a surprise ready just in case. Someone smashed a bottle and the armada sprang into action and wiped the party in short order, which I immediately reset as an illusion a la Eternal Darkness. They were a bit more respectful and careful after that, lol.

I’ve thought of an awesome idea. What if a captain has one of these pestering him, but he ends up locking it up. They then learn that there is a Water Spirit possessing the ship in a bottle, so they ask for the players to obtain it to help them with traversing the open seas, and they have to obtain it by shrinking to size tiny, and invading the bottled ship. So now instead of fighting a small ship, it’s now like your on an actual pirate ship fighting a full crew of pirates. I imagine they get the spirit by either killing the full crew, or to make it shorter say the water elemental’s residing as the captain, so either killing or taking the captain will cause them to release the bottle from their grasp and turn back to normal.

One day, for some reason, he finds this possessed tiny ship in a bottle and they bond in friendship and respect. The little boat sees this giant as their captain on land, and the dream of both of them is to find a method, probably magickal, to turn the little bottled ship into a real life size, big ship so they can go to the seas together one day.
