For the skeptics: know that Spielberg and Hitchcock have always done detailed storyboards. And that Mad Max: Fury Road benefitted by being so visual and dynamic in part because they created the storyboard first and the script second. Film is a visual medium; I think it's smart to make a visual plan before filming or animating.

Dude, great tip! Even tho i feel like ive heard this already, its the way u explain it and visually show the premiere timeline that makes it finally click for me. Will definatelly integrate this to future projects.

Okay, you've convinced me to do this for my next film I'm planning, which is lighter on dialogue and heavier on visuals (and vfx). I've dreamed of doing this, but got too overwhelmed with pre-production in the past and thought the work wouldn't be worth it (also doesn't help that I'm terrible at drawing ). It's time to graduate to this though, seems immensely helpful.

@obscurity_films2 жыл бұрын
@@Selrisitai I'm in pre-production on a feature right now and am leaving some time for storyboards in the schedule. The project has a lot of 3D virtual environments so i sort of get to play with angles and framing with the virtual camera in the process of building out the environments, which is nice.

That’s a great tip! I never thought about it in that way. I’m definitely gonna do that in my next film. Thank you.

I’m hearing the phrase “animatic” for the first time as of six minutes ago. Thank you - This could allow me to preview the film to others to get feedback before shooting a single frame. (If I have time) Awesome! Plus people are more likely to watch an animatic than read a script. An animatic can help me learn if people are getting lost in the story, or if they are wanting to see more of a character or more of what happens with a relationship. This is great! Thank you! 👏

Love this. Something I did on my last film that might be helpful to you and your subscribers: I started using my iPhone to actually shoot the shots beforehand with either myself or my husband as a stand in for the actors, and then I edit it together in premiere. It helped hugely when working remotely with a DP in LA while we were in NY. We shot a sequence in our front yard, edited it and uploaded it to our DP all within 20 minutes and he was able to really grasp what we were looking for.

What a fantastic suggestion. I'm working on a short film at the moment. And I've already started storyboarding it before shooting the scenes. I'm about to shoot another scene, but, now I will try this animatic approach before shooting. Thanks so much. This is just the inspiration I needed to fine tune my skills as a filmmaker. So glad I subscribed to your channel. Cheers.

The problem with this is that in animation they edit the film and make the montage before animating, and with live action you don’t because it doesn’t give you space to improvise

If anyone hasn't, go check out the short film. I just watched it and it's really good. It's sort of weird that a video about the making of it has almost as many views as the film itself.

Accept that anamatics work even BETTER for action! Mad Max, fury road made a detailed anamatic. It helps with pacing and timing of the sequences. It also gives your sound department more time to work on soundtrack instead of waiting for the final cut of the film. ...only a dialog heavy, one location shoot might not benefit from an anamatic. *Shrug* ... but it also might help in ways I haven't thought of

It would be even more evolutionary to use Unreal Engine 5 for it! That’s what I’ll be using to make my films, since a no-budget wouldn’t be good enough for my vision, so I have to turn to UE for the production
@StandardStoryCo Жыл бұрын
Unreal is amazing, I used it to create a set for my stop motion animation project during lockdown. With tools like that and a little help from AI, in 5 years or so I think ANYONE is going to be able to create ANY story without spending years on all the tedious parts like animating characters. Exciting times!
@SimPilotMika Жыл бұрын
@@StandardStoryCo I could be one of the first people to make a feature-length film entirely using Unreal Engine. It’s going to be about a failed man seeking ambition in a self-help cult, and then learning he’s fine just the way he is and to be content with his life

Hey! In reference to your walking for Netflix video. I was curious on the actual demand of vfx and cgi artists within the industry. And how you would advice someone young with the talent for such work to get into it?

Not so sure about the VFX game, but I think the principals of that video would apply to getting a foot in that part of the industry too.

Can you draw stick figures and simple geometrical forms ? Might look nicer in fully rendered pictures but as long you get your idea across, it's all fine. No need to create a masterpiece on the visual side at this stage of the process...
