Marshall DSL's are just perfect recording amps. Sound great, sound fat, take an overdrive well. They just have the perfect cut and balls for most metal and rock. Classic.

My wife’s brother-in-law lives in Maui and is a pro guitarist that has played with everybody from Willie Nelson to Alice Cooper and has jammed with Journey and Aerosmith when they have all visited the islands (enough name dropping) and he has a Marshall JVM 410H for large gigs and this amp for smaller gigs. He said he actually prefers this amp in a lot of ways over his half stack and has used it (mic’ed of course) for some of his bigger gigs. Awesome little amp! Thanks for the video!

3:08 Preach brother Kyle! There's a reason back in the 80s so many guitarists were going for 200 and 300w power amps - absolutely clean headroom. For metal, you want preamp tube distortion, not power tube.

I've had my DSL20r head for almost 2 years. Absolutely love it! It can do anything from classic rock to brutal metal. I hate almost every on-board gain channel but the gain channel on this amp is seriously great. NOTE: I did have a faint rustling noise at first, at all volume levels, but I accidentally left the amp on for 48 hours and it disappeared

@GuitarP0RN 2 жыл бұрын
@@SimonMedia666 I only use the 20 watt mode, so I can't say since the issue basically fixed itself. The rustling noise was the same amount no matter the volume or channel. You might have a bad tube. Maybe try leaving it on for 48 hours, like I accidentally did. The folks at Marshall possibly didn't do a burn in process for the tubes.

@captpootis8495
@captpootis8495 2 жыл бұрын
@@xdx2653 I know that boss Katanas do need to break in before they sound good. Also the amp itself may need to have some things changed. There’s a official software from boss so you can change pedal effects and so much more, I’d recommend doing that because once i had did that it now sounds closer to slipknot then what I was using before. Now on lead tones I’m not sure what to do because I rarely stay in there. But maybe lower the bass and focus a bit more on mid and treble.

I absolutely LOVE my DSL20 head and matching cab. I’m in the process of taking the stock speakers out and putting a pair of Eminence SwampThangs inside the cab and then this things gonna be GNARLY. It’s seriously such a underrated amplifier it’s almost heartbreaking. Big boy EL34 tubes and with any flavor of boost (I use my tube screamer mini or SD-1, but soon my Revv G3 purple pedal will be here and oh lord… the brutality of that tone will be amazing) and possibly a JHS little black amp box in the loop… and you have such an amazing rig. It’s seriously such a great bang for your buck as well. I stand by it 200% saying it’s one of the best amps I’ve ever owned. Get one immediately! Love your demo Kyle!

totally agree regarding EL84’s. I think Marshall’s cathode biased EL34 models all do a great job at scaling big amps down (which I usually find too much of a compromise). DSL’s are generally overlooked, they’re easily available for £300 here in the UK and it’s hard to think of a better amp for the money

agree with the EL84 take. the Mini Rec is the only amp with EL84s i’ve ever owned that manages to still capture a pretty fat agressive sound. i end up dialing back on the mids on it a bit too to keep it from becoming too boxy from the 84s. this marshall is next up for my collection!

Thank you for your honest opinion of EL84 tubes and their intended purpose. I feel the same way about those tubes, and the tone they give. Although manufacturers have been able to expand the palette of EL84 tubes, they don't have the grunt that EL34 and 6L6's deliver. It doesn't matter what kind of zener diode circuit you use in the gain stage, or newest hot rodded pickups, EL84 tubes will not deliver that heavy crunch and chug tonality that you need to unleash the beast ( so to speak, for sensitive religious folks).

great amp. I loved mine when i had it. got the newer DSL100HR now. no regrets. more head room, more low end and the added master volume controls make it even more versatile. doesnt compress when you push it like the little one does. if you get a chance try one out. i find myself plugging into it more often than my 5150.

You get the Marshall 6 button footswitch for your DSL100HR yet? It essentially turns it into a 4 channel amp. Highly recommend it if you don't have it yet.
@Ironwarpigg
@Ironwarpigg 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! I ordered the Footswitch about 5 minutes after getting the amp lol. Was more than enough time to decide it's an amp I will never sell. The Footswitch really adds to the versatility. I like how you can use it to switch between the two master volumes while playing. Even with the extra cost of the Footswitch the amp is still a bargain relatively speaking. It's a much better amp than some that are twice the price.

Compared to the 20watt dsl would the 100 be better even in an apartment ? is the master volume good at low volume?
@Ironwarpigg
@Ironwarpigg 2 жыл бұрын
@@eTERNIAN69 the master volumes work great. I actually think the DSL100HR sounds better at lower volumes than the DSL20 . Whether you use it at the 50w or 100w setting you can get decent low level bedroom tones. Which is the main reason I sold the 20 I had. Just didn't have a use for it anymore. Another option is the DSL40CR. All the same features as the 100 including the extra channel modes but in a combo size amp. The 20 is a fine amp though. You won't be unhappy with it. it's very small and portable. The entire DSL line is great.

Funny. I bought 5 heads in a month (cuz I can. I’m sick that way) and the 6505 mini was one of them. I was going for Gary Holt tone. Anyway, I sold the 6505 quite quickly. I couldn’t stand that amp. Also got a Randall RD20. Good, but too many mids. Aced that pretty fast too. The DSL? I already had a DSL1H and that thing is sick so I bought the DSL20H. I had to know. It’s similar to the 1 watter, but it does sound a little different. Both was crushing wit a Boss SD-1 in front of it. Tried a tube screamer, Artec parametric, JHS Andy Timmons @, Plume, and a few others. The JHS is really good, but the cheap SD-1 is crushing. Ace the 6505. It’s just not anywhere close. Hope all this info helps cuz I’m tired if typing. 🤓

Lol yep I heard someone say that the tone shift shifted the tone right out of it . I don’t know why I feel more validated about my DSL20 I’ve had it a little over a year and I’ve always thought it was an excellent amplifier for rock and metal . Maybe I don’t trust my ears anymore ? Kyle and Ola both seem to love the dsl20 , they get the most constant tones of the you tube guitarists that I watch. Just about anything they demo they get their sound out of it . That’s not a bad thing, I’m sure either could dial up some pop country math rock tones if required . I’m still waiting on someone to put a Hot Tone Mod in V1 and see what happens to the classic channel with an extra tube in it . I know the ultra channel would probably be useless with the mod in there but I wonder if it would make the classic channel sound like . It might not even work on the dsls , or maybe it would damage the amp .

@belligerentamateur ,....Kyle this little amp is crazy. What an insane amount of bass this little guy puts out. On the ultra gain channel I am running the bass at 11:00 and the resonance under 9:00. And it's still too much bass for a classic thrash tone. It still has a more modern low end. Gonna need a boost to tame that. Other than that it's a killer little amp. I really like the mid-range voicing. It's punchy without being pokey or fatiguing. This is the first high gain amp I've ever owned that I am running the mid-range higher than the treble. It sounds so good that way.

thank you, finally someone who talks about breakup in powertubes for metal :D I never push my powertube to breakup in my 20watt amp. to get the right tone i push the channel volume to the max and than match the gain controle to a nice sound. i find that with my particular amp that works the best. I own a Blackstar HT20 MKII btw, changed the speaker to a vintage 30 and I'm really happy with the sounds I'm getting. for those who want to know: OD channel with voice controle on. isf: 0 (USA setting) treble: 5 Middle: 10 bass: 7 channel vol: 10 gain: 6 could you review this amp for metal? and what do y'all with this amp think about these setting? PS.: fun fact: if you put the channel volume of the clean channel on 8-10 with the voice controle on, you get a nice rock sound (reminds me of a plexi-ish sound)
