Man you win the prize for the best shootout video I have ever seen. Great feel on the guitar, cool songwriting, great video editing. I have a DSL 20 and feel like it held its own, except when you went for the more dissonant chords (which I loved). It also struck me that the plexi model seemed to sound the best on all the playing styles, chords and single not or double stop type riffs. I actually played a combo version today and loved it. Amazing work man, Marshall should send you a 100 watt 1959 for all your hard work!!

I bought the SV20H a year ago. It's my ninth Marshall amp and the one I like the most so far. It really is a great and versatile amp if you don't need channel switching. It's got a really great clean sound and the overdrive just can't be beat in my opinion. When pushed hard it goes almost on the fuzz territory. It's also a great pedal platform if needed. The only thing I wish is that it would have that same vintage look on the rear panel too.

That said, they all sound, and given how much less the DSL costs, it's an incredible machine.
@rangerdoc10294 жыл бұрын
The mini plexi has the most balls. A simple boost could get it into the high gain territory of the others. They all sounded really good here. For most versatility, I'd probably go with the Jube.
@stephenlawson16592 жыл бұрын
They all sounded great however.. I did find the SV to have more rounded dynamics sponge and quack!. Really moved me more because due to the lower gain I believe the voicing of the notes had more character. I have always been a super high gain dude in my younger year but learned over experience less gain can actually create an impact of heaviness due to clarity in tonal shaping. I like to use an mxr micro amp in front of the pre or other gain pedals for the option of higher gain without boosting volume or changing the color of the existing tone.. Peace!

@stratolestele76112 жыл бұрын
IMO, having owned one, the Origin isn't in the same league as any of these. I found mine to be the thinnest, lifeless Marshall I've ever experienced. Absolutely no balls to it whatsoever. Volume? Sure, plenty of volume, but useful? Nah, not at all. Effects loop was also the worst I've ever used. "But the cost!" well if you want the Marshall aesthetic as a decoration, you've got that. It looks pretty good. "Nails that plexi vibe." No. No it doesn't. It doesn't come remotely close. I thought for sure that I could eq it, and use any of my pedals to get me into usable tone - nope. I also couldn't get any bass out of it. Tried every cab I own (1x12s, 2x12s, and my beloved basketweave 4x12 loaded with the excellent Hellatone 25s) with it all with the same result. Put alongside my JTM45, it's just not even a fair fight. Yes, the JTM is much more expensive, but there's no changing the facts. The JTM is what a proper plexi sounds like. The Origin is the worst amp I've ever owned, and I've owned a LOT of amps over the course of my 30 years of playing. Hear that chunk, that chug (albeit in the plexi vein, of the SC here? THAT is what you want.

@@stratolestele7611 really? I’ve gotten some pretty convincing tones out of my 50 albeit I’m running 6CA7’s instead of EL34’s. Running through a slightly deeper 2061cx clone with v30’s. I turn everything up except the bass which I keep at 9 o’clock. Gain is around 3-4 o’clock. Presence is up for extra bite and the tilt is used as a generalized EQ adjustment. Boosting the front with a morning glory, low gain and high treble and it sounds pretty nice. Obviously not a jtm45 or plexi but it gets in the ballpark when dialed in.

I was listening to how the Plexi didn't have that upper "fizz" on that classic crunch tone. Really like that! The 800 and the 252H both sound like the gain needs to be backed off a hair, almost like a blurry image where the plexi and surprisingly the DSL both sounded clearer yet still had that great Marshall crunch...very cool. I think also if they weren't back to back like that you may not notice, but in this demo i heard it right away

They all sounded great. The DSL held its own just fine. I wonder if the components are higher quality in the UK made Marshalls. Anyone know?
@adamwatson69163 жыл бұрын
Probably not so much higher quality but just different. The studio amps are based on vintage designs so they would have more vintage spec components and the dsl would have more common modern spec complaints so difference in components is more down to design.

What a fantastic demo but they really do sound very similar. I’ve played the SV20H and SC20C and they sounded very different from each other in real life. Impressed with it to the degree that I'm really considering switching my Randall RD20H for the DSL20! One important thing is that most listeners pair the 800 with iconic performes. Who had their JCM's heavily modded-hot rodded a good amount of cases, and I think the DSL deivers that pretty much! One guy here on YT made a DSL sound like Iron Maiden Powerslave album tone without any added pedal or EQ so... it is not a mere modern take I'd say :)

Man, such a great comparison here - Thumbs up! Marshall is so reach in harmonics and has the most recognizable tone by far if comparing to other amps! All Amps sound great in this video, for me personally Silver Jube is the BEST fit for its flexibility and an ability to follow each of his small brothers tonaly with only a few potis' moves. It is such a great amp, guys! I own the 2555X for this very reason, I'm probably still yet to discover why Bonamassa, Frusciante, Steve Morse, Slash and bnuch of other guys are using Jube. For now, I know that you should first let the amp run for 10 mins for tubes to warm up, then plug in a really good attenuator - yeah, Marshall is a Marshall and needs to be pushed with at least 70% of the power to reach to an optimal working point for power tubes. I did it this week after owning Jube for 1 year with no attenuator - this is a totally different beast now! Playing at home / small stage / gigs guys with 50W even (can reduce power from 100W to 50W) is still like a thunder in a quiet forest! I tell you, SPL Cabulator + Marshall Jube = perfect combination! ..and I own also Marshall Vintage Modern 100W, DSL 2000 50W, couple of other brands. It seems like I will always come back to Marshalls, despite the fact there is a number of such great amps nowadays - Marshall plays with a roar, with such an overwhelming tone like only a few others can. "If I stand in front of my Marshall and my balls aren't shaking, I ain't satisfied". This is what I remember from Kerry King playing his JCM 800. Rock on!

@Just J Those are many of the same observations and experiences I have negotiated with Marshalls over the years of tone chasing :) I think the Boss TAE (Tube Amp Expander) with its own supplemental effects loop might be the way to go for these old Marshalls - of course any solution you can put together with an external load box, external loop, etc. will work. Also, the ‘Circle of Tone’ KZbin channel just did a great Iron Maiden rig rundown featuring Marshalls with dirt boxes getting smoking hot, iconic, and even modern high gain tones. I started out with probably the best Marshall I could ever hope for back in the day - a 1977 JMP 100 watt with matching 4x12 loaded with 30 watt Celestion’s. Deeply regret selling. My brother and I went through a bunch of Marshalls, including having them modded by local amp gurus like Andy Marshall of THD amps, and a few others. Had some great tones - in retrospect, probably didn’t appreciate them enough! Currently own a 50 watt Plexi on a rare 8x10 cab (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hprZdKx9nLeKsMU) Cheers~

Marshall should make Vietnamese produced 1 watt versions of all of these...similar to the 50th Anniversary 1 watt heads,...but obtainable and affordable, like the DSL1HR. But since they seem to be having quite a bit of difficulty keeping up with current demand for the products they already make, I don't know how likely any new products would be anytime soon.

@SonicDriveStudio I´m considering EITHER getting JMP-1 preamp to play thru my redseven duality 50RS fx return, or one of the studio series. Which would get me the BEST Marshall crunch tone? Think ACDC.

Okay, that was the most comprehensive comparison video I've seen of these amps. Awesome job. And I'm still torn on which to get! Lol I've ruled out the DSL, but I really like different characteristics of the other 3. They all sound good, & all have their individual strengths. Damn.

I've had a dsl20 head for few years. Not very happy with it. Was using a Harley Benton 2x12 horizontal cab with v30s, then tried a Marshall mx2x12 vertical cab and that cab sounded worse than the HB. Finally got a good deal on a b-stock mesa recto 2x12 horizontal vab and, Viola! "Its alive!!!"

I have the DSL20cr and I love the damn thing, however and my question is if all Marshalls are this way but my amp is SO speaker influenced, I mean the stock 70 eighty wasn't terrible as most say but it wasn't that warm cream I was seeking. I run my 1x12 combo with another 1x12 extension cabinet. I tried the 50w Hempback, 25w Greenback, 80w 70 Eighty, Electro-Harmonix 12VR 75W and combos of all of them and most say nothing beats this amp with 2x 25w Greenbacks!! (for the sound I'm going for dark stoner rock like High on Fire, 70's metal like Black Sabbath). My fear though, if I play without the extension cabinet in full 20 watt mode, getting flubby chugs. Is the creamback the higher wattage greenback as far as sound goes?? Oh I almost forgot, my point, every speaker sounded vastly different from each other and almost like playing a different amp all together. Did I mention, I love this damn amp! for such a reasonable price point, Marshall has knocked it out of the effin park with this number!

A really well done video! I've played some of these in RL and they sound more different than they do here. They all sound great to me, although I think I like the SV best and then the Jube. They'd be a great combination. The 800 sounds good too but I don't know, I think there are better options for the price out there featurewise.

Sorry but in a Live application there isnt much difference in Tone nor sound between any of these Amps. They all sound Great. They're All Marshall's. However, The Dude Playing Guitar plays So clean and articulate that I'd bet He could make Any Amp sound Great. Really like this aGuys playing Style. 😊

i've tried a dsl20 and it was really brittle in the highs. did your choice of cab impacted the crazy highs some of these amps can have normally?

Honestly, one of the better amp demos I've seen. That's an impressive set of amps. The DSL20HR really surprised me with it's fat tone. and it's the cheapest of the bunch by a long shot. Great work.

NO PERSONAL OPINION? So these U Tubers think what they hear is the same as what I hear. It's different. And I have an audiophile system, but FRFR speakers NOT 12" stamped frame guitar speakers.

They all sound incredibly similar I can believe how good the DSL sounds considering it’s half the price. I’d say the 2525H has more what I describe as resonance and a fuller tone but it’s not miles apart.
