Personally, I love the integrated comm system, it's sleek and unobtrusive. I love this helmet for all the reason you highlighted but the integrated comm system was the main reasons I purchased the NecTec 2. After a bit of "configuring" I was able to pair it with my '22 Road Glide. I can easily make and receive phone calls. I rarely listen to music thru the headset, prerferring my amp boosted sound thru the Boom Audio II speakers. Plus I don't have much need for the intercomm feature. I guess it all comes down to personal preference. Ride Hard or Stay Home. I appreciate all you do in support of bikers!! Thanks

I also like the clean, integrated SRL comm system on my Neo Tec 2. I suspect Shoei engineers would tell us that externally mounted comms affect aerodynamics and create some degree of wind noise. I’ll definitely consider the latest NeoTec helmet when my NeoTec 2 wears out. I should start saving $50 per month for a new Neotec, SRL and the tax. That’s more than my first car payment back in the early 70’s. LOL.

Agreed about the integrated comms, I have the Schuberth C5 with their somewhat expensive (Sena) SC2 comms. Sound quality is impressively good, but very quiet as I use custom moulded ear plugs with 27dB of attenuation. My main gripe with ALL helmets is why the hell aren't they made with some built in ear cups (removable if you want) to cut down wind/engine noise? We all know that noise levels get dangerous for your hearing at more than 30mph so it's a no brainer!

Bought my Shoei Neotec 3 Santori earlier this year when I bought my Ducati ST3 after 24 years away from having a bike. With the kids grown up, my wife said I could get a bike again, but she insisted I get the best gear I could. I'm loving my helmet. And today, I went into Canberra and bought the Sena SLR3. I believe it will suit my needs perfectly. I don't ride with big groups and just want the ability to answer the phone or listen to podcasts/music. Oh, and found your channel by accident while looking up the helmet and fitting of the Sena. Liked and subbed, man! Awesome presentation... ride safe and stay safe out on the roads officer!

Hello from Australia! Great video and extremly informative. As someone that rides alone, I must respectfully disagree about the integration of the SRL3. One of the selling points for me is the integrated intercom. I will abmit the system could be better if there was a 3.5mm jack for my in-ears, but otherwise, as a system, I think the Shoei-Sena partnership is a fantastic, turnkey solutiuon. As a lone rider, I was only looking for a quality intecom that doesn't get in the way, and an integrated system works for me. Thanks again. I really appreciate your review, and your experience with the previous iterations really helps as well. Happy new subscriber to your channel!

Double D ring is antiquated? 🤔 Maybe less convenient but I’m pretty sure, in testing, the ratchet mechanism used on the Neotec is not as robust as a double D ring. Otherwise, why does Shoei (in other helmets) and Arai (arguably the most safety conscious helmet manufacturer) still use them. I stand to be corrected if someone can provide evidence. I have a Neotec 2 and Arai helmets. I couldn’t care less about the strapping mechanism for my use case. Meaning, I don’t chose to wear one helmet or the other based on how the strap mechanism works. Some helmet manufacturers have moved to a fidlock mechanism offering even greater ease of use.
@TannerBobbitt7 ай бұрын
The D Ring is far superior to any other design. The newer systems are just for lazy people, in my opinion. It takes 5 seconds to buckle the d ring style.
@dkw04177 ай бұрын
The double d ring is stronger, but to a useless point. And the rachet systems are more convenient. The rachet system is strong enough to rip your head off before it breaks. Sure the double d ring is stronger, but you won't be around to say I told you so if you ever need that extra strength.
@stevegresty41817 ай бұрын
The ratchet system came undone on my Schuberth C3 Pro & yes, I did fasten it, haven't used it since. You can see when a D ring is fastened, would be nice at this price point to have the fastening system as an option.
@hiddendragon4157 ай бұрын
As a daily rider the speed of a ratchet mechanism is valued. Although Double D is mandatory on the track it's no safer "Shoei fitted identical helmets with both systems, bolted the straps to the floor and used a fork lift to lift the helmets simultaneously. The result was both helmets collapsing at the same time, before either of the straps failed."

Attention! The biggest difference between Neotec II and neotec 3 is that they changed the headshape. I have a long oval head and always had a hard time to find a perfict fit - only a handful of manufacturers produce really long oval helmets (e.g. Schuberth, BMW, Shoei) especially if we narrow down to modular helmets. I wore many of them but on long, multi-day trips I started to suffer with each, until I found the Neotec II. It perfectly fits my head. I tried Neotec 3 and it is more rounded inside, less comfortable for me. So beware - if your Neotec II was a perfect fit, Neotec 3 might not be. And, in my opinion, a helmet's comfy fit is the very first safety feature. When your head is aching, you can1t focus on riding. Other than that, it was interesting for me to see how different our requirements can be regarding helmet comms. It probably roots in how we ride - I would never ride in a pack of 20-30 riders, but I often take my girlfriend as a pillion for long tours and it is lovely that we can keep chatting during the trip - having navigation info or calls whenever needed also. If you ride fast, and you appreciate a fine helmet's balanced aerodynamics and quietness, why would you screw all that with an afterthought, bolt-on comms solution?

Hi there. Thanks for your review. Just a quick 2 cents: I couldn't disagree more with what you said about the integrated comms systems. As a Schuberth C4 Pro and now a Shoei Neotec 3 helmet owner and user, I LOVE the integrated comms. I love how there is no ugly, ungainly, un-aerodynamic, clunky attachments sticking off the side of the helmet. One concession I will make though, is they should do what Schuberth is now doing with their integrated comms in the C5 model, where they have the option to *CHOOSE* either a Sena OR a Cardo plug and play module; so the user can choose the one that fits in with the ecosystem they're already used to, and which their fellow riders in their regular groups use. And either module just plugs directly in and works seamlessly (see SC2 (Sena) vs. SC2 EDGE (Cardo)).

I'm gonna have to take a hard look at this - I thought it was a good upgrade option, but the integrated thing is not a selling point. I currently have a Neotec 2, and am looking at upgrading to something even quieter. I didn't realize the Neotec 3 had gone off the deep end and joined with Sena. The Sena thing really bugs me. Myself, my hubby, our son, and his friends that we ride with are all utilizing the Cardo units. I have a BrakeFree on the back of my current helmet and that battery door thing for a system I wouldn't use anyway is frankly disappointing. You did a great job of explaining the new things on it in detail, so thank you for that.

Just bought one yesterday to replace my Neotec 2. Which replaced my Neotec which replaced my Multitec. Every "upgrade" was met with a face shield that was progressively more difficult. I could swap the Multitec's shield wearing gloves (really - I've done it). The Neotec 2's shield was a PITA and the 3 has added a third widget to line up when reinstalling. All that being said, it is very comfortable. I've yet to take it out for a ride, but have installed the Sena SRL3.

I have NeoTec 2 with the intergraded headset. It works good,but I wouldn’t buy the intergraded headset again. I had Sena 20s and after 7 years of use I had to replace it. I find it much more convenient to be able to remove the headset controller to charge the battery and if multiple helmets can be moved helmet to helmet. I find it difficult to get the charge wire plugged into the intergraded helmet and if the helmet is not layer on its side,it rest on the charge wire. I see you use the Cardo brand. I have often wondered how that compares to Sena.
@iu2bi7 ай бұрын
I was about to buy this one. I had a Neotec 2 and loved it. But there is this huge deal breaker (to me, at least!). Last year I burned >200$ on a Cardo system. And now I need to just trash it away and spend a ridiculous amount to get a Senna, if I want to take 100% advantage of this helmet? NO WAY Shoei, nope. I got really frustrated now. It's fantastic to be able to (finally) remove the comms unit from the exterior side of the helmet! No more external appendices hurting the helmet's airflow and performance, plus adding to overall wind noise at high speeds. This alone is indeed a great plus over the competition, IMO. On the other hand, limiting buyers' options to a single brand and expensive model is not the way to go, I guess. Ok, I can just try to plugin my Cardo unit as usual, but that defeats the integrated cooms purpose, and I am paying for something that ultimately just adds weight to the helmet for nothing. It would be great if Shoei could offer two variants: one with the integrated comms slots, and a simpler version without it. I am pretty sure they would sell more units to folks already owning external comms units, even the ones from Senna! Ho well, I might regret it but I will pass on this one :(

The Neotec3 is not the perfect helmet for me, I thought this helmet would be better than my Neotec(1). During my first ride this year with the Neotec3, the impressions were very positive, but after 45 minutes the helmet started to press quite a bit on the sides of my head, this became so bad that I got quite a headache, so I had to stop because continuing to ride was irresponsible. After a break of about half an hour I got up again and drove back home and after 45 minutes the pressure on the sides of my head returned. The manual for the Neotec3 states that after a long period (?) of riding, the helmet can start to press lightly on various points of the head, for which a 2mm padding can be ordered that can be mounted on the center pad. I tried riding with 2mm padding on top of the center pad to see if that would reduce the pressure on my head. Unfortunately that is not the solution for me, it took about 1 hour before the pressure on my head became too intense again. What surprises me is that I can drive for hours on end with the Neotec(1) without the comfort deteriorating, why is that not possible with the new Neotec3, what has changed on the interior. Unfortunately, for me the Neotec3 is a bad buy.

I totally agree with your complaints about the integrated comms system. I actually like the idea: it removes the external "appendices", which helps reduce a lot of noise due to wind drag on the unit at high speeds. I use an NXR2 with a Card unit and you can tell the difference in the overall noise level with and without the unit attached to the helmet. In that sense, I would love to be able to just move it into the helmet's interior and keep the external surface clean and smooth, as it was designed and tunnel-tested for. On the other hand, I hate the idea of trashing my existing unit and buying the Sena one just to use this helmet to it's full potential. And to folks like me, not going that path means that we get a fantastic helmet with extra weight and unuseful compartments. Shoei, how hard can it be to let your all-time-returning buyers decide from two options? Why can't you sell two versions of the same helmet: one with Sena, one without Sena (and all the associated crap, ofc). Simple as that 🤷♂

I agree with your comments on the integrated bluetooth systems. I know they look slicker but let the consumer decide which system to use. I have several riding buddies that use Cardo and with the Sena system in the Notes 2 it is hard to connect with them. Also if you designed the helmet with out the room for the integrated bluetooth you may be able to save some weight on the helmet. Adding weight is the wrong way to go in this day and age. For the people that like it the drop down tinted visor is great if you use it. I don't. I wish helmet manufacturers would leave that out. But some people will not agree wit that.

The intercom is the reason I didn't buy the last version of the Neotec. I've had the Sena and the Cardo versions and prefer the Cardos. I have a Schuberth C4 Pro that I love to wear, but have yet to use the Sena that comes with it.

What is the best solution for mounting a SENA?
@JuddDredge7 ай бұрын
Great review! I have two helmets with the integrated comms (Sena) on both. I prefer the integration and streamlined installation. However, that is because I Bluetooth to a GMRS radio that has a mile (or more range) and is completely compatible with any GMRS radio system or walkie talkies. I think GMRS is superior for range and flexibility, and any GMRS from any maker is compatible. I don't even need MESH, just Bluetooth to the portable radio, and me and my buddies are all hooked up. -Much respect to you and your review, just a different way to connect to other riders. 😊

Helmets are the most important gear as have. More important than pipes, Stage 1/2, chrome.... I wear a Simpson, also expensive, but it's an investment I am happy to make.

Hi, Ryan. Great info and I'm a huge Shoei fanboy. They are worth every penny. I've got over 30,000 miles on Shoei RF-1400's with zero complaints. What always steered me away from the Neotec is that I've heard riders complain of excessive wind noise. Have you ever owned a RF-1400 and if so, how would you compare the two based on wind noise alone? From experience, the RF-1400 is exceptional in this area.
@RyanUrlacher7 ай бұрын
I have not run the RF-1400. All I can say if that don't find that any noise bothers me at all and I've used a Neotec for many many years. I have run a Schuberth. It's a bit quieter, but the Neotec is so much more comfy. I've run another brand modular helmets an they are way louder for sure.

Cool. Appreciate the reply. RF-1400's are super comfortable as well.

@@RyanUrlacher Ryan, I read your views on the Shoei and the Schuburth C5. You made some great comparisons. How do you feel the Shoei C3 compares to the Schuberth C5? (Trying to find a C5 is an effort all of its own) Chip

Cardio could keep up by building integrated. The irony is thatHD is also forcing use of a comms system to integrate into. The SENA system will match other systems using the smart app.

I love the idea of a modular but fear that chin bar giving way when I need it
@RyanUrlacher7 ай бұрын
I understand. But, they have done extensive testing and it's good. If your on a race track doing a 200 mph (professional racer) I'd go with non modular. But for street use, a "quality" modular will do just fine. DOT approved with testing. Beware of cheap modulars though.

I totaled a motorcycle while wearing a Neotec 2 and it involved sliding face first on the pavement…I bought another one to replace it.
@TannerBobbitt7 ай бұрын
@RyanUrlacher DOT is the lowest rating a helmet can have. It's a useless rating/certification. The half helmets are DOT approved and don't have a chin bar at all. ECE 22.06 is the certification that we want. Shoei is falling behind by not offering that certification. Makes me feel like their helmets aren't as safe as everyone wants to believe. Id much prefer to have something with MIPS or ODS to have that rotational protection, too.

I just looked at your website to order one, and it shows about $400 more than you said, I want to support your channel and was going to order one but I am Canadian and don’t want to pay that much. I would love to have one. If you could possibly get me one for less, at the price you said I would definitely order one. Thanks for all your reviews and all videos. They are great.

My NeoTec 2 has the ratchet straps. The clunky D-Ring is a better system. Fortnine actually did a test. Facts vs opinions. Prove me wrong. I'd love to see your touch on a comprehensive test of the D-Ring vs the ratchet. Good video though. 100% AGREE on integrated comms. Such a bad idea and the very reason I did not buy a Shuberth (can't remove the integrated microphone). Anyways - I removed the comm cover on my Shoei NEoTec and was able to get the Cardo Packtalk to mount just fine.
@hiddendragon4157 ай бұрын
To prove the strength of the ratchet versus a double D, Shoei fitted identical helmets with both systems, bolted the straps to the floor and used a fork lift to lift the helmets simultaneously. The result was both helmets collapsing at the same time, before either of the straps failed. Fortnine has spread BS more than once.
@Kudosfromamsterdam4 ай бұрын
The integrated comms are much sleeker and reduce wind noise versus the glue on external modules, so i don’t get the rant. Had the SLR2 in my Neotec 2 (not impressed) and now SLR3 in my Neotec 3 and it is great!

How is the wind noise? The main reason I stay away from modular helmets vs a full face is wind noise.
@hiddendragon4157 ай бұрын
The Neotec 3 should be quiter, it has a more streamlined chin bar and smaller neck opening but when travelling distance I always use ear plugs, wind buffering noise is always a factor.

I own the second generation Shoei, and I like my Simpson Mod better. The lens removal system is better. No integrated sena. The lens moves better. The mod portion when up not only does not fall down but can be locked in the up position. The best part is I didn't have to sell a kidney to buy it. My opinion is that the Simpson Mod helmet is hands down the better helmet. Thanks for the review, though, but I think I will use my Simpson and leave my Shoei in the garage where it belongs.

AMEN to that brother! I HATE INTEGRATED COMMS! Let us pick who we want to go with. I'd love to pick up a new Neotec 3 Santori, but since the graphics on Shoei helmets as well as Schuberth helmets both (IMHO) suck, and because of the int comms, I'm now reconsidering HJC for my next helmet. Another missed opportunity for Shoei. Maybe next time...in about 3 to 5 years.

Thankfully you have a platform that can potentially reach some helmet manufacturers. I absolutely despise integrated comms. They pigeon hole you into a sub par model from a brand that you might be opposed to and as you said, render the side of the helmet useless.
