What's going on with Shoei?

I was the kind of guy who believed I would trade in my head before I buy a modular. Oh boy, I was so wrong. I had an opportunity to use the Neotec and was blown away by the quality, comfort and features that it offered over my premium Arai full face. I still love Arai for the no compromises to safety policy, but the Neotec 3 offers so much more and the latest safety certification. It kept me cool and hydrated on longer trips while I had to stop and remove to take a drink. The sun visor is so cool compared to me carrying two visors and prescription sunglasses. Easy to put on and take off. Kept me dry inside during a 2 hour rain. Like Chris said I just got over myself. Will never go back to a full face.

I had a Neotec 3 for a few months. Ultra comfortable and plush, but cold air leaks everywhere and the sun visor was not centered (slightly on the right). Unacceptable for me at this price point. I bought a Schubert full face with a visor, no more leaks, much happier even if the padding is slightly less soft than the Neotec. Your mileage may vary...

Sorry but Neotec/ all flip front helmets are dangerous! The fact is that people do not ride with them fully closed all the time. They seem to make the assumption that when opening the front whilst riding they aren't going to have an accident! + Wrong! + There are other dangers with flip fronts!

​@@kasperkjrsgaard1447 Oh dear. There used to be a choice in the UK at to whether you wore a helmet or didn't! They realised that leaving that choice lead to more danger for rider's. Giving an option where a rider can leave the front unclipped , ride with open or walk around with the front open is dangerous. Dangerous as you never know when and at what speed accidents happen or when you'll be distracted or forgetful walking around flip front open and have you head and neck snapped back as you walk under something close to you head height! So NO, they are dangerous as they allow dangerous option and the ability to ride with the front open!

The manufactors clearl states whether it’s legal or not. However, if one as a user decides to ride with the helmet open, despise the fact that it’s both illegal and unsafe, the manufactor can’t be the one to blame. It only takes one idiot!

Head shape makes very little difference with Shoei. Most shops will give you Personal Fit for free when buying the helmet (at least in the Netherlands).

Shoei is the only helmet that fits my head comfortably and I had two accidents on the race track without any injuries. Shoei forever.

Started life with an Arai but never went back due to shape of my head. Tried an AGV but misted up all the time. Was then super chuffed with my X-11 Kato replica, for a long time. Then had an NXR for a short stint but couldn’t stand the wind noise - only eliminated when I put a hand on my shoulder, so something to do with lower cuff shape. So then begrudgingly got the expensive X-Spirit of current time. Another Kato. And love it. It vents well, it’s light, and zero wind noise. I’d never touch an open face, given seeing an injury where rider went through a fence and ended up with barbed wire embedded through his top lip and gum.

American perspective here: I’ve bought multiple helmets. From HJC (i10), AGV (K3), Arai (Regent-X), Sedici (Strada II), and Shoei (RF-1200 and the X15). I purchased the HJC as my first helmet mainly looking at the price. After talking to other people that I met riding, I found that many had the AGV K3 and I liked the design and the price wasn’t terrible so I purchased it. I had always known about Shoei being very reputable and decided to upgrade after hearing about a local wreck and it brought me back to the reality of how important gear truly is so I got myself a RF-1200 (it was a few months to a year before the RF-1400 was released). I liked the aggressive shell design compared to the Arai. Then, I decided to get a helmet with a paint scheme for shorter rides that were more relaxed and only on roads not highways, and decently safety rated so I purchased a Sedici Strada II Animale as it wasn’t just DOT rated, it was also ECE compliant with the standard at the time. Next, I was strongly looking at beginning to ride at a track and wanted a helmet that would be a good track helmet but was also a reasonable price and found that, for me, the Arai Regent-X fit what I was looking for. The problem I found after purchasing was that the Arai was VERY noisy. Not just my bike but the wind noise as well (that’s when I started to wear earplugs almost every ride). It seemed as if the helmet had holes cut out of the ears. So I decided I would get the Shoei RF-1400 to replace the Arai for my track helmet but upon walking into the store I saw they had received the Shoei X15, decided to try one on, and ended up spending a few hundred dollars than I walked into the store planning on spending. The aggressive look in comparison with the other Shoei, and the much more comfortable liner (also for some reason I thought it would be a way to show off to a friend that had just purchased an AGV Pista and talked about how great it was?). Initially, I had regret of how much money I had spent to purchase yet another helmet after thinking about the ones I had at home but it was genuinely my favorite helmet I had purchased after just one ride so it became my day to day helmet for almost every ride (except for rides on my Grom. I used the Grom to begin trying to learn how to stunt ride). Fast forward about 2-3 months from the purchase date… I was in a very serious accident while riding my GSXR 600. I was wearing the Shoei X15 when I wrecked. Knowing the details of my accident that I know, I genuinely feel as though my other helmets would not have protected me and prevented either head/brain injuries or given me an opportunity to survive. That being said, it’s entirely possible the others might have done a similar job of protecting me and I just feel the way I do because of mental connection of “I survived a wreck. I was wearing this helmet. It’s the only one that would have saved me.” Either way, I am beyond glad to have been wearing it and that it did exactly what it was made to do which is lower/prevent head and/or brain injuries. 10/10 will purchase again once I’m recovered and ready to get back on a bike. 0/10 recommend wrecking. Would not want to do that again (I didn’t want to this first time either but stuff happens and I’m just blessed to be alive and have 10 fingers and 10 toes).

I crashed three times in top of the line shoes. They worked well. Buy the best. 1 speed wobble on 750 Interceptor at a buck ten (bike should have had a speed damper; it didn't 2. bad downshift on an ex 500 - was used to gearing on my 750 and spoiled by the slipper clutch on the Interceptor. 3 had ffrnt tire slip out due to unseen road surface hazard in very heavy fog (also condensing on outside of viser-should have stopped to clear it off more often)

100% Agree. Early on it was Bell. Since finding Shoei years ago I’ve only worn a Shoei. It fits the best. Price is not my concern. The best safety engineered, fitment, fit, quality fit & finish, which includes excellent paint details. That’s it. Excellent review there Chap with the cap! For me it’s the RF1400, Hornet and coming very soon a Neotec 3. Carry on!

One big disadvantage of neotec is chance it not being fully closed in event of a crash. Neotec 1 remainded fully closed in 93% tests, Neotec 2 was fullly clolsed only in 70% tests. Neotec 2 is back at 93%. Its still not 100% - that is one of many reasons why some people choose full face helmets.

In Australia in the 80s , it was a choice of Arai , Shoei , Bell , and AGV. My first helmet was an Arai gifted to me by my dad when i got my licence and i have had several Arais thoughout my career. Over the years i have had helmets from many (most?) brands , my favourite was an AGV for value , comfort and noise . I am reminded of the Bell helmet slogan from the 70s . It went something along the lines of "a $10 helmet for a $10 head.

When I was a young guy, where have you heard that before, a car turned right at an intersection and cut me off. I live in Australia. I ran in the side of the HR Holden and pushed the centre pillar in, righting off the car and the bike. I was wearing a full face helmet and broke my jaw in three places. I think if the helmet was an open face helmet, I would have been worse off.

Very informative vid as always Sir. As a GS owner I have the Shoei Neotec 3 and find it the best Helmet to date from them, very comfortable and the quietest so far. I must confess at 61 years old the idea of a flip up was not on my Radar, especially with the GS, however having gone out for a ride with a mate in 30 deg of heat , me in my GT Air 2, and seeing him lift the flip in every 30 mph area or stop, with a lot less faff at petrol stations and seeing your enthusiasm for them I went for it and would never go back now, what a revelation. l have an E2 as well, not in the same league as the Shoei imho, but handy for some light off Roading (would sooner chip/scratch that), but still with the abilty too flip to get some air in for a panting old git 😷

It is legal to ride with it up and in effect it become an open face helmet, I can only assume you preach to those also who use an open face helmet too? @@HW100 Nothing to do with preaching or personal choice. Moto legends Chris preaching that modular/Neotec/flip front helmets are as safe as regular full face😢. They clearly aren't due to the ability to open the front and the fact that nearly if not all riders do! Yep open face are dangerous, no one knows if and when they'll have an accident. Personally sliding up the road face down under the rear of a moving car with the rear wheel then trying to drag the riders head up in to the wheel arch with tyre grinding away the full face chin bar and visor is not something I'd risk with open or modular helmet. Rare, but face plant is quite common so you take the chance but don't try telling people owning a flip front is as safe as a regular full face.

@@HW100 ps. I never suggested and I don't know that anyone has suggested that riding with the flip up isn't legal! But its obviously in no way as safe as riding at the same speed in the same conditions wearing a regular full face. In fact you should have an accident a £100 cheapie full face would probably be safer compared to open flip front should you land or slide face first! Or may be you have lightning quick cat like reactions and would close the front as you went down 🤣🤣🤣

Same here! I have an X-Zero fitted with a peak and a yellow tinted visor. Maybe not the best Shoei that i've owned, but deffinatly the one that i appriciate the most! Have an NXR too, but it has to be cold or rainy, for me to use it over the X-Zero! 😄

I have NXR 2 with transitions visor. Very pleased. Previous helmet GT air, i found the tinted drop down visor too dark. The transition visor although expensive is very good because it adjusts the tint to suit the brightness.

@@Daedalus1632 I would say it goes dark enough for me and looks dark from outside looking at it as my friends have told me. You dont really notice it changing but its fast enough. Its quicker going dark than it is going light. I like it a lot and don't even think about it while riding. Hope this information is helpful.

Loved the video, for me, my helmet of choice is the NXR2, fits me like a glove, it’s super light and comes with d-rings fastening which, IMHO, once you try them, there’s just not going back. Kudos also for its huge visor and excellent vents.

Low winter sun goes through a sun visor as if it’s not there . A peeked lid has made getting home safely many times and wind is no problem on a adv bike . Not tried on my sports bike though! Don’t forget arai don’t have a visorsothe peek is all you’ve got against the sun

I used to use Arai but a few years back they changed the profile to a more rounded head type so when I went to buy a new lid I found they no longer fitted, the store manager suggested I try Shoei and it was a revelation so I bought one and found I no longer need my ear plugs as it was so much quieter, I now have three a NXR ,Neotec and GT air for different styles of ride and conditions I can just wear what suits the journey and the bike I am on.

And the Pista is far lighter and cuts through the air far better, but its louder, and less "comfortable". Its what you want on your ride at the time. Like picking the right jacket for the weather.

X-SPR Pro user fitted with a Transitions visor here. I use it solely for road use / touring (BMW K1200S) It’s the best helmet I ever had (most expensive too) Ventilation is fantastic, not that noisy, very comfortable and the Transitions visor works unbelievably well. The advantage of a drop down sun visor over a transitions one is that the drop down is instant and controllable. My eyes don't react as quickly as they used to to changes in light level, so the ability to change tint at the flick of a switch is essential for me!

I'm a Triathlon referee, and often do my work as a pillion rider at slow speed with an experienced rider in front. I need to communicate clearly to the athletes while riding, and because of that, I have choosen to use a open face helmet (j-cruise 2). The question I often get, is why I have such an expensive helmet, when I only do what I do. To me, that is the most comfortable and safe helmet, that gets the job done.

Great video although I disagree over the peek helmet. I have a Shoei Neotec 2 and an Arai X4 adventure helmet. I live in the Brecon Beacons which isn't the Serengeti but coming home on a late summer evening heading west, with a low sun when wearing the shoei helmet I've sometimes had to stop as I can't see a thing. The drop down visor does nothing. However with the X4, all i have to do is tilt my head and vision is restored. Trying to predict how the day will pan out and what helmet to take is the bane of my life this time of year!

I put a few strips of blue and/or yellow painters tape on my helmet windscreen, so I just need to tilt my head down to block the Sun with the tape.

I am a lady and have had two Shoei NXR helmets as they come in xxs, they have been fantastic helmets. Next year I will need to replace one so will go for a PSF fit on a new NXR2.

One aspect to consider with peaked adv style helmets is how the design functions in relation to the bike's windshield. I have a Tiger 850. Protection from the windshield is acceptable; not amazing, not dreadful. When riding with my HJC RPHA 70, the wind noise is incessant, intrusive, and tiring after an hour or so.. If I stand up on the pegs at 60+mph (ie by-passing the effect of the windshield) this helmet is excellent in terms of noise management. If I wear my old XLite GT 551 (large peak, large visor) the perceived wind noise level from the screen is significantly lower. I believe there's a positive interaction between the air coming off the top of the screen and where it's deflected by the peak. Adv bikes put the rider in an upright position when seated; sports and sports tourers usually have more of a forward lean. When you look at the design of most sports/sports touring helmets, the visor aperture suits a more forward leaning position and tends to be higher on the brow, and any wind tunnel testing will no doubt be biased towards this forward lean angle. Of course it could just be happy coincidence that my old peaked Xlite works surprisingly well with the Tiger's screen....another peaked lid might be really noisy. This is why it's really annoying that most, if not all retailers won't allow you to try before you buy. Fitting in the showroom is no substitute for a proper road test, and when all's said and done, decent helmets aren't cheap. You could find that that lovely, comfortable helmet you tried on in the shop is actually horrible in use...

I think you do Peaks a disservice--same reason you like a bill on your cap or the fold down visor in your car--the peak blocks the sun from shining down into your eyes! I am also sensitive to bright sun (migraines) & wear both "transition" lens eyeglasses & tinted visors, but prefer my helmet with a peak on non-cloudy days to my other helmet. Though most of my riding is under 50mph, it's been fine at higher speeds too.

I agree. Much of my travel is East-West or vice versa and a peak as well as a drop down sun visor is essential. Unfortunately the helmet with the most effective peak (Schuberth E2) won't fit my head shape..

@@rodbowes5309 I have Nexx XG100--retro style & snap on visor--but is now discontinued 😠 but deals on remaining stock! Nexx recently released a new Adv helmet with a peak, but I did just find another XG100--I have many visors that are still good (different tints) to keep me going for a few more years. Sometimes I prefer my Biltwell Lanesplitter for its flip up visor, but then I miss the peak. I'm a casual rider, not too often on 4+ lane freeways as I prefer smaller, winding roads... Nexx also has a lot of padding options if the shell shape doesn't work (round oval is the most common).

Many many years ago, I had my first bike, and had a jet helmet. I went to a go kart meeting, and, right in front of me, a kart crashed, went upside down and the occupant went down the road on his face, the result was appalling. I was so shocked that next day I went to bike shop and bought a full face shoie. Been wearing shoie ever since, current GT air 2, sooooo light, the sun visor is a game changer. despite your excellent selling technique, I would hard pushed to get a neaotech, I would like a hornet, mainly because the peak shields from the rain when slow or stationary (looks cool too). but no sun visor is a problem, so hopefully..... The main complained on NXR 2 is ventilation, by that I mean if you wear spectacles, it is not very efficient to prevent fogging in a cold weather...My previous RYD had superior ventilation regarding glasses. Also visor switching is way more finicky then on older models

I do think it's funny that when going through the Shoei line (the only helmet I wear - so hence my interest), you used a variation on an old Bell Helmet advertisement slogan "if you have a $10 head, wear a $10 helmet." That ad came out WAY before I was of age to buy any helmet, but the idea has stuck with me for decades. It's too bad Bell helmets are so frigging uncomfortable. LOL

I only buy Shoei when on sale or at the end of a certain style...I saved a small version on my Neotec2. The only problem I have with it is the attachment of a separate comms system.

I have a Neotec, a Neotec 2, a Schuberth, AGV Corsa R and AGV K6S. I use the Neotec 2 only for touring and riding in the rain. Mostly I use the K6S. It’s the most comfortable and the safest.

Yes agree, I also had the rubber on the chin strap split apart, l used some super glue and it's holding up. Still that was never an issue on the Neotec 2.

Soooo disappointed in the neotech 3 bought it to replace my neotec 2. They have made the ventilation channels in the liner so wide the weight of the helmet is supported by a lot less area of the skull and now creates pressure points. Did it need greater ventilation? I live in outback Australia and no it didn't. I wasted nearly 2k including comms.

I was a long time Shoei user (GT Air) but they lost my business when they went to a dedicated comm system and chose Sena rather than the better IMO Cardo units. To me that was a downgrade. Having ridden with a Cardo for years, I can say there was no need for an integrated comm. Luckily, there are great helmets out there that allow the rider to choose the comm system they want to use.

Thank you for that great video. I`m owning a GT Air 2 and a NXR 1. And I always prefer the NXR because of its lightness and better fit, which of course is subjective. Once I will be upgrading, probably to a NXR (then 3?) with a self tinting visor.

Most important consideration is getting the helmet to fit you. I have tried arai many times but can't find one that fits well. Shoei just fits my head.. However, I recently switched from neotec 2 to agv tour modular. Largely because again the AGV fits my head better. The quality is not quite on par with the shoei but it is also hundreds less. Also I like the agv because it's a cardo integration.. I do wish shoei had more locations that did the super custom fit service.

I'm sorry, I totally disagree on the peak issue, riding out of London on the Westway on an Autumn evening there's no substitute for a peak, just a little tilt of the head and the sun is blocked, unlike a drop down sun visor, which plunges you into darkness in the parts of the road shaded by the tower blocks alongside the road.

I always run a strip of tape along the inside of my visor. Tilting my head down will block a low angle sun.

Just put a half inch strip of tape along the top edge of the visor in the middle 4” and you will get the same benefit. But you won’t get any of the buffeting and added noise. Simples! CP

@@Motolegends I have tried the tape thing, it's all about finding just the right depth, but even then I prefer a peak, for those low and to the side moments. And at London speeds really buffeting isn't an issue. Didn't Arai used to make a helmet with an external dark tinted half visor designed to do much the same thing as the tape trick? I remember seeing one and thinking what a good idea it was.

Regarding peaks: I bought the E2 over the C5 from Schubert because the peak looked really cool. I had the peak around for the first 20 miles and since never put it back on. I should have just gone with a Neotec 3.

Great exposition on the Shoei range. Do you have any opinion on the LS2 Advant X Carbon v the Shoei Neotec 3? The one major difference between the two is that the chin on the LS2 flips back completely, whereas on the Neotec 3, it's a flip-up, which impacts the modularity of the helmet. But, on the overall build, features, and comfort levels, how would you compare the two?

Sadly PFS is not available here in NZ. Even getting different size cheek pads etc is extremely hard with long waits of months. I needed a thicker liner for my Neotec but the NZ people could not get one for over 6 months. I ended up having to order it from Shoei US who had stock. However for some reason, they would not ship outside the US so I had to have it mailed to my brother in the USA and then had him send it to me. So laborious! The only reason I would buy a non-flip helmet is if I was racing.

I started on a Shoei RF-1200 and I’m currently wearing the X-14. I did go and watch your review of the Neotec-3, but neither in this vid nor that review did you head-on address and answer the question I have of whether that flip-lid helmet is just as safe as the Shoei full-face helmets. What does the data say? Loved both vids, though would like to see what you think of the X-15!

I’m a new rider on a CB500X. I’ve had a *Scorpion EXO AT960* for the past two months, and have done a couple thousand miles on the West Coast of the U.S. It’s a modular with a drop-down sun visor and a removable peak, and it is 2206. It may be noisier than ideal (or the Neotec), but earplugs fix that for me. It fits like a glove, and I’m really, really liking it in every way. I got the white Kryptek design version, which I think looks awesome. If there are any very knowledgeable helmet people out there, can you weigh in on what you think about this helmet as far as safety (compared to the Neotec), or anything else? Thanks 🙏🏽

I see sibling junk helmets nowadays. And it shows how much value people have for their own life. Let alone somebody else’s. See the same with protective clothing. My rant now being settled… Love this review and support for the premium brands in general. My first Shoei was a GT-Air and loved it for 7 years. 6 years ago I also added a NXR for the track and sports bike. Great solid helmet with a dark visor. My wife has it now most of the time 😅 Last year I bought my Neotec 3 with Senna SRL 3. This is pure bless. I never want anything else for the road. Only added a smoke screen. This is something I don’t understand, why don’t give riders the choice for a clear - smoke - dark visor on purchase. Not doing so only adds an extra 75€ to the price. I understand logistics and production but wouldn’t it be nice to have this option. I recently bought a KTM LC4 for Sandraiders and some justified off-road adventures. For this again, I’ll look into a VFX- WR. Because their is just something when popping a Shoei on your head that feels likes home and secure. Thanks again for your input and great views. I had (and still have) a Shoei GT Air 2. I now have an Arai Quantic. The Shoei has a drop down visor, a micrometric strap, and the visor is easier to remove/replace. Everything else, and I mean everything, the Arai does better. The comfort is better, at least for me, the airflow is leagues ahead (really, there is no comparison there), the fitting of the intercom is better and yes, sorry to contradict you, the Arai is quieter too. And aerodynamics are on another level, really (the GT Air 2 is lifted at speed on a naked bike, the Arai, not). The field of view is also better, with a pinlock that covers the entire visor. The shoei is very good, I was happy with it. But the Arai is clearly the better helmet for me. Also, it even comes cheaper. I would still consider buying a Neotec for slow paced touring or commuting, but I wouldn't go without the Quantic for a spirited ride, now.

My prejudice with flip helmets is rooted with an experience; after a highway speed accident (and hospitalization; the police charged the driver who performed a U-turn across the road), the police returned my full-face Shoei. The chin bar was ground flat and where the chin bar met the rest of the helmet (towards the left ear area) the helmet fibreglass was cracked at full thickness. You didn’t mention the impact resistance of the pivot points; can they handle high impacts?

Just bought a hornet , not from yourselves as it didn’t appear to have the size in stock however I would rather have a shoei helmet with a slightly older safety rating than a cheaper helmet with the up to date ratings , quality and comfort are top notch , first trip out was a 1500 mile tour , helmet was brilliant, no issues at all

Ive had my Hornet for two years now and still love it. I spent ten years as a bike messenger using road helmets with a strip of tape at the top of my visor. Always had to wear sunglasses as well... (new zealand sun) The hornet is the first helmet i can wear without sunglasses and for a peaked helmet is very quiet, i have lost 90% of hearing in my right ear and have terrible tinnitus so i know what a loud helmet can do.

I bought a shoei gt air 3. Wind noise is bad, tried to adjust the visor. Couldn't turn the screws, they all dethreaded so it's stuck. Cost so much and 4 screws were weak AF. Such a waste. Very frustrating

Thanks. Please provide a simple nonsense helmet Shoei. I appreciate your quality, but like to change my helmet regularly, as I do many miles and in hot climates. I loved the Raid/Raid II back in the day. Then came the Qwest. A brilliant helmet for me - reasonably priced, comfortable, safe and not too noisy.

I’ve Glamster helmet and noise level is unbearable. Though I love it but have to keep the visor open. It’s hell loud even with ear plugs. Can you please advise how’s NXR2 for touring and is noise level is manageable? Like the snug fit and light weight. Cheers.

The Hornet has an issue probably with the modern competitors, especially Nexx helmets. The new X Nexx Wed3 adventure helmet has all the things you mentioned. It's 20-26 rated with a patented special inner layer. It has a drop-down sun vizor, an integrated com system with Sena S-50 last generation mesh. Three integrated fixing points for action cams, clear and smoked vizors included, D ring strap with a magnet, etc. ...etc. You should review it and consider adding Nexx to your stock.

@@Motolegends I am using Nexx Xwed2 since over 2 years and it is great. Easily as quiet and comfy as my Shoei, similar build quality (except for plastic visor butterfly screws - these are crap, but easily replaceable), much, much better thought out in terms of features (Shoei vents are a joke to open - have to park the bike, look in the mirror and only then find the sliders and observe carefully which way is open) and incomparably better helmet bags than the customer-insult Shoei adds to their bikes.

I own the top helmet of all the brands. Shoei X-14, Arai RX7, AGV Pista and HJC RPHA 11. In my opinion Shoei is the overall best but Arai is more comfortable. The AGV is really light but too noisy. The RPHA 11 is also light but feels cheap compared to the others. If my Arai was as quiet as the Shoei it would be the top choice.

So I currently have an NXT2(RF-1400 here in the States) with the transition visor. I absolutely love it and it is my favorite. I have since changed bikes from a metric cruiser to an Interceptor 650 and am very disappointed that Shoei North America will not give us the Glamster. I do agree that it is a dreadful name. The GT Air2 is the current model here in the States and it is absolutely uncomfortable for the American shaped head. Fortunately, we will be receiving the third iteration very shortly. I got a chance recently to view a Japanese demo model and the sizing seems to be absolute spot on so they must have improved the fitting

I have a J-Cruise (2), but I’ve always liked the idea of getting an Ex-Zero and I’m about to buy a J-O, but I’m really sad the choice from Shoei is being reduced for ECE22.06 😢

I only buy Shoei helmets. I use the GT-Air2 in the winter and my 1st gen Neotec in the summer. Yeah, my Neotec is about 10 years old and I will buy the Neotec3 sometime next year. I find that the GT-Air reduces noise much better than my Neotec. Now the new Neotec may be built differently, bit I do not need the additional air in the winter months. My other reason I use these helmets is integrated sun visor.

Exactly, and "There is no definitive law on the subject, but some say that riding with a flip-up helmet could be considered contributory negligence. In the UK, a defendant's claim could be reduced by 10% if the helmet was flipped up and contributed to neck or facial injuries".

I ride with a fllip lid and always make sure it's closed properly. Same goes with your strap. You'll never blame the helmet manufacturers, wen a rider does not make sure, that the strap is fastened securely.

For better or worse esthetics plays a huge role when i purchase an item. I have only worn Shoei RF series and update as the model updates. The overall esthetic is a major decision in my purchase. Once an artist always an artist. Arai looks like a bowling ball with a cutout for a shield. Dont get me started with those visor corner covers. That puts Arai firmly on the curbside. Speaking of esthetics: the new alpinestar R10 is persistantly calling my name...

I went for the ScorpionAT960, the white Kryptec version. it’s a great helmet, and looks amazing.
