I suggest that you use this grading system for all colored pencils, regardless of price. Then, after testing all the pencils, put them in performance order - (1) regardless of price per pencil, then (2) in order of budget friendliness, then (3) by lightfastness, then (4) by color range, then (5) by hardness of the "lead", etc. That would be another step in making your channel a handy resource for artists, professional, amateur and beginner.

Some of those brands came out since I bought all the sets of inexpensive colored pencils on Amazon, but back then, the two best sets I found, for my arthritic hands, were the Hifony followed by Kalour. The Hiforny work well with Prisma pencils and Kalour work well with Polys so I kept those two sets and donated the other sets to a school program.

So I hopped on Amizon and found all sorts of two-tone and tri-tone and even 4-tone colored pencils. Most of them are kind of cheapies. But I'd love to see a great colored page using only multi-toned pencils: Two-tone, tri-tone and/or four-tone pencils. The results are crazy neat I think. I was surprised with your results too, but just because pencils are cheap, still I see great results, lots of fun and they all manage to give decent results. hi Jennifer! How long ago did you purchase your Amazon Basics pencils? I bought a set during the black Friday sale for $15 and they were so strange and unpleasant to work with. I had heard such great things about these pencils but I think they have changed quality. This is what frustrates me about some of these budget brands, they can switch manufacturers after a review is posted. I have not tried all the brands you mentioned here but I did like the Artrsto!

Hi Lindsey! I was worried about quality changes too so we bought all of these sets brand new for this testing (including Amazon Basics) even though I already owned most of them. During the testing, I tried very hard to focus on just these twelve sets and not compare them to any others…like Prismacolor for example. It was an interesting experience. Amazon Basics was definitely not one of my favorites but they were not terrible either…very middle of this pack. Mediocre at best.

I use Avery 5412 blank labels (5/16" x 1/2"). I hand write the numbers and then use a piece of clear, shiny tape to make sure it stays attached to the very end of my pencil. No squinting required and I haven't lost a single label yet. Bonus: If you number them 1 to whatever and you do that AFTER you've arranged them in the order you prefer, you'll will always know which pencil goes where (and which ones are missing if you set them aside to do on and off work in progress.)

Thank you so much for this excellent review - your reviews are always superb, I’ve sent for your first choice though it’s an eyewatering £59.99 here in the UK atm. However I’m increasingly wondering if something going on with Chinese made coloured pencils? There have been a plethora of them appearing on the market recently, especially Amazon, and all seem very good for the prices charged. I have many pencil sets, including Luminance, Faber Castell Polychromous (easy to get here in England), and Prismacolours (really expensive here in the UK as we don’t have a trade deal with the USA and taxes and duty thus are high on them). The latter have been my favourites, due to their creamy lay down and colour range, plus of course they were the supposed next generation of my all time favourites, Karismacolour, which were even made here in the UK, by Berol, in one of their factories. (Same colours, same names, but gorgeous quality - had they still been made I wouldn’t have bothered with any other pencil manufacturers). However recently I’ve been very impressed by Brutfuner. They are gorgeous pencils - I have the macarons, the squares, the standard round barrelled ones, and even the 520. However this week I wanted to buy a set for a grandchild and it was really hard to find Brutfuner at first glance on Amazon. In the end I sent for a 120 set on offer, £19.99 including a zipped black case, from a company called Bagotien. They arrived from Amazon the following day - with all the pencil inside being clearly labelled Brutfuner! They are gorgeous - vibrant and lovely, as I would expect from Brutfuner. I even sent for a second set with the same result (though a day later the price had gone up to £24.99). I then decided get a second set of Brutfuner Macarons, and as I’m scrolling through looking for them, see both of the Brutfuner boxes used for the two 260 sets A and B (I’ve kept the boxes) but with the name Brutfuner obscured, and sold under the name of Qunine - with the contents looking identical to the Brutfuner (and at a price of £405.99, a lot more than the price I first paid. ). A few days earlier I’d bought myself a set from travelling - the Evanzer set. Lovely pencils - but they felt so like Arteza in feel and look, with even some of the names being identical (eg peaches and cream - though to be fair they are not the same exact shade), that they got me wondering too. I’m starting to wonder if there are a couple of factories in China, producing pencils which then get sold to different dealers and then are sold under different names - so are we ending up buying what we think of from dealer A and B, but in fact are the same pencil made in factory C? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, given all the reviews you do, and indeed thoughts from others.

@@ColoringBliss thank you for telling me about this. I’ve since done a bit more digging and it seems a major player is H & B in China, who make a lot of colour pencil sets (including Macaron) and who have on their website that they supply Arteza and Staetler. No wonder so many seem the same - they are!

Well said…I wish I could have included more prices from around the world, but can you imagine how complex and time consuming that would be?!

There are cheap pencils and inexpensive pencils. I would say that pencils 1-5 are NOT cheap...they are inexpensive. Pencils 6 and over would tend to be cheap. I own the 120 set of Kalour...I love them. I also own Prismas, Polychromos and more recently Caran D'Ache Luminance. I tend to use my expensive pencils on special pieces, and the less expensive ones on coloring books. That being said, it is so nice to have an inexpensive set work so well, and be so soft and buttery. It makes coloring book relaxation even better!!! BTW...I just received my Ohuhu Tri-Tone book...and I am looking forward to completing that. It came so quickly and it is so well done.

I’m surprised Markart isn’t on the list. They’re amazing pencils. A set of 120 costs about $22! They’re beautiful & vibrant & blend nicely. I wonder how they’d compare to the Artisto?

You’re the second viewer to recommend them…I see a follow up video in our future!

Very well done….and surprising. Unless the brand sells open stock in art stores why is the number important?

Don't have to have 72 colors! I just bought the 24count set of Prismacolor. A winner!
@ColoringBliss6 ай бұрын
Yes!!! We wanted to include the smaller set of prismacolor but we knew they would easily beat any of the other contenders. So we decided to run the comparison the way you see it.

i love comparison videos... so i looked up the star joy pencils ... and what should i say? 98€ on german amazon ^^' and artisto are not even listed at all.... but the 72er kalour pencils are 15,99€... the 520er set costs 110€

you are such an enabler, but in a good way. I wound up buying the Artisto since I wanted a good pencil to use, saving my Pollychromos for professional work. and they're actually better than expected. My husband saw your test results and wanted the Shuttle Art which looked like it has decent pigments. He was not disappointed but felt overwhelmed with 136 colours lol. I did warn him. SJ Starjoy is next for an oil pencil that's cheap. Your pencil/colour battles are my favorite videos, very helpful with so many products out there. Thankyou

You're so diligent with your pencil tests, though sometimes I wonder if the only winner is the Chinese factory that produces most of these brands. I lost count of how many are made by the same manufacturer.
@ColoringBliss6 ай бұрын
It is true that the majority of the 12 sets in this battle are made in China, but not all of them. We listed the country of origin for each set on the worksheet so that people who want to support other countries can do so.

what set of 12 colored pencil set besides prisma would anyone recommend for students in 4-7 grades. I will be their art teacher and want them to do their best but at a budget of under $25 for all their art supplies including prang wc paint, 6b pencil, oil pastels, and strathmore wc paper? thanks

If you get the watercolor set72ct. It flushes out the colors I think it’s 72 separate colors from the colored pencil set

So how does artisto compare to the big dogs like prisma?
@sophieellie31936 ай бұрын
I have the original Prisma with the Berol label and those pencils lay down a much richer pigment compared to my Artisto set. The Artisto feel very creamy and I would recommend them. You only have to add a bit more layering to get saturated color.
@ColoringBliss6 ай бұрын
I purposely didn’t compare them to the big dogs because it just wouldn’t be fair. I don’t think any of the 12 would win a battle against the professional grade pencils like Prisma or Faber-Castell
