Trent, I have been following your blog for 4 to 5 years and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I am 79 and had an uncle who was a professional pilot and introduce me to Aviation when I was 5 years old. He took me and my mother for my first plane ride in a Stinson when I was about 5 years old. That hooked me on flying but I finally rode with him in a piper P3 Cub when I was about 13 years old. We flew around our hometown of Auburn Indiana and I took pictures of the town and of our home in the country. I finally earned my private license when I was in my second year of being in the Army at Fort . That was when I was about 24 years old. I flew for a couple of years but had to give up flying when I got married and had a family. I have never given up my love for Aviation and still hold a dream of perhaps renewing my license. I look forward to your completing your build and enjoying your videos of your new cub.

The Bearhawk Patrol is a 2-place tandem that probably would have meet all your back country requirements with a 140 mph cruise, but you would've had to assemble/build a lot more of it yourself, particularly if you wanted to try and use the 916. You'll be happy with what you've chosen. FWIW, my wife prefers tandem.

I expected a Bearhawk as well. Just seems like it ticks all the boxes. The Patrol is only 850 useful. But the Companion would be there and keep side by side seating which is nicer with the spouse and 250 lbs baggage. Would not have to convert to tandem.

Gosh this reminds me of my uncle in the 60’s building his Pitts special. I’d spend time with him while he was sanding every little part. Mid way through his building the wings they changed the design and he scrapped the whole wing set he built and started over. So many pieces were works of art. He finally got his plane doe and flew it in the 80’s. What a labor of love. He had a single car garage in San Antonio . He had to build another garage to hold the plane once its was nearly finished.

Trent, I am excited to see this new chapter in your life and the new aircraft. Please keep up with the build videos so we all have an idea of how it is progressing and not be kept in the dark! I am not a fan of the tandem seating but as you said, it's a trade off. Best thing for your passengers in the rear seat is lots of windows so it feels more open and not a coffin and either have a panel in front of them with some nav maps or something of that nature. Even if it is mounted on your seat. That will help your passenger feel less of a trapped soul. Put a mirror above the pilots seat so you and your passenger can keep eye contact when talking and you not have to wrench your neck around to check on them. Also, please do another horn/smoke system install in this one. The smoke helps you alot judging wind in the backcountry as well as looking cool as heck. and come one, everyone LOVES the horn. But man, please please ,this time have it on a separate switch.

Loaded with VG's, she stalls at 23 knots published, but I have a video at 3000 feet MSL , and 1800 RPM, flying level, zero VSI and the airspeed indicator going well below 23 in fact it went so low it wasn't even registering a number any more ! But you guys will get used to it and I'm sure she will settle in! 17:08 what a pathetic thing that company did sending you that "cease & desist) , first impressions are everything and as you said you are promoting back country aviation and a company that makes bush planes has a grumpy episode! CubCrafters received Chinese capital funding by selling them the type certificate for the Top Cub. I think the Legend is the right choice especially since they are working to incorporate the 916 instead of just using a typical Lycoming or Continental. A turbocharged engine just makes more sense for your type of flying. Now just figure a way to mount your Starlink antenna with the narrower fuselage. I'm sure you made sure to install the proper ELT. Having the Repairman Certificate is a nice bonus as well.

I have tried both tandem and side by side. And I will always go side by side. If anything happens someone sitting beside you has a far better view to see where to land and if you need help with flying the aircraft they are right there. Plus you can hand them stuff to hold, look at a map or information and workout things together. You will also find that someone who has never flown before will be far more likely to do a better job in an emergency. Anyway good luck with the build and I hope you enjoy your new adventure.

It’s fun to hear about what you wanted in your aircraft. The interesting thing is we have very similar requirements for our aircraft. I too wanted a well built (strong) airframe, a nice finish, lots of range (fuel), a glass panel, lots of baggage area, and a good cruise speed in a tandem aircraft. I did not need to get into really short strips nor did I want to customize the airframe, so my choice was the Aviat Husky A-1C. With 1,860 hours PIC in Huskies, I still love them. I hope you have as GREAT of experience with your Legend Cub.

For a paint scheme, you might consider one of your favorite characters or symbols. My husband used to build and fly RC sailplanes. He liked to use red with yellow accents. On the yellow rudder, there would be a lion rampant, representing Aslan, the "Not A Tame Lion" from the Chronicles of Narnia. He'd also put a yellow or white band on one of the wings, so he'd know which direction it was flying when it was high up on a thermal. Those things only had about a six foot wingspan, more or less, and could be very hard to see. Similarly, blancolirio bought the twin engine Cessna "Harvey," with the white rabbit Harvey on the tail. You mentioned you like red. But in your backcountry flying, a high visibility color scheme would be better for safety. Red both is, and is not, a high visibility color. Like the Freedom Fox, mixing red with other colors will really help it stand out.

Hi Trent, I think what you are doing is super cool. Building a custom bush plane with legend aircraft is really awesome. I hope to become part of the bush plane community one day. I’m only 17 at the moment, but you and your videos have really inspired me to live out my dream of becoming a back country pilot. And for that. I say thank you. Thank you for being an awesome source of inspiration for me and everyone who watch your videos. For a color scheme, I think maybe the plane would look cool with the aircraft painted red and a black American flag scheme somewhere on the aircraft. Maybe towards the wings or on the tail section somewhere. What ever paint scheme you come up with, I’m sure it’ll be awesome.

Mike can't do that. There is certain things Mike can not do, and building someone else's dream aircraft is one of them. If you remember the plan to build Scrappy in the beginning, you will know that Scrappy became something so entirely different, it should have been called Scratchy. Some stuff on that airplane just didn't exist anywhere until Mike build it. I think what Trent is doing, is really a quite awesome way to build an aircraft.

Legend Cubs are about $400k. I think you can get them as low as $350k if you go bare bones. His build is custom and he has added some stuff, so it is probably north of the 400 marker, but probably under 450. He might be getting a discount on his for promoting them, but that gives you a ballpark for what to expect if you wanted the same thing.

So, 10x the cost of a Kitfox for maybe 20% more airplane? Doesn't seem like a good deal to me. And I can't wrap my head around why one would be so expensive. There's really not that much to one.

Given the options you made the right choice. I am a 3 time Carbon Cub SS owner since 2010. I placed a deposit for the first US Carbon Cub UL position in March of 2023. I cancelled that position last month. I really wanted the 916iS in a CC SS, but many of the same issues you cited with Cubcrafters (the company) where too much for me. It is not the same company as it was when Jim Richmond and Randy Lervold were running things. Good luck on the build. Looks like Legend Cub is filling that role now.

Trent, my thoughts on your new bird... it's a Cub in its heart; Cubs are memorable for their shape, but mostly their yellow color. My suggestion, since you like the color red, is to paint a sun with rays on the upper wing surface done in yellow and red. The motif can extend down the sides as well, even integrating the lightning bolt pattern similar to the cub's longitudinal stripe of old. Anyway, you're design, no matter how it comes out, will be great. Oh, since the Cub was used in WW II as the L-4 Grasshopper spotter plane , there's always camo!

Hi, just reaching out to STOL pilots that if you are anywhere near North Carolina you could do a lot of good by stuffing your plane with supplies and flying into the communities that are cut off by the flooding. Of course open airports are the first choice, but if you can land anywhere, do it! Get your non flying neighbors to provide the stuff.

I think I have seen almost every mod done to a cub in Alaska. There was a mod, I think they called it a Superior cub that involved a J-3 with a o-290 no flaps very light weight. Weight seems to be the limiting factor in how a cub flys. More horse power means more load carrying capability. At the expense of maneuverability. some cubs have been rebuilt and altered with higher AOA and other mods that are not really visible. I have a fuselage, long wings, a couple of engines and enough parts to build one in the shop. Gas on the field is 7 bucks a gallon right now, it's saving me money sitting there.

Nah, you can put any motor you want in a Bearhawk. It is experimental. I have a buddy who has helped put a turbine in traditional piston driven planes. He built the first KR2 with a turbine. He and I discussed it quite a bit. It would take some work to get the weight and balance right on it. The weight of a turbine vs an IO540 is substantial.
