What a great and informative video, thank you so much! I was looking at the HX stomp for building a more compact board, but I was a bit worried about the “complications” of adjusting drives and what not on the fly. I guess delegating these to actual pedals, like you did, sorts that out! Again, great job man!

Ever since I was a kid I've loved the idea of having an absolute wall of amps behind me so I've been pretty judgy when it comes to the Stomp, Helix, and stuff like it. I've been playing them both a lot at church but I still wasn't sold. You figured out how to perfectly fuse the convenience of digital with the feel of a traditional pedalboard. Great job man!

Returning to Nerd Land... programming! I spent a few years with wet /dry all rack mounted. I sold everything for an amp with knobs. Old school amp OD & finally one by one pedals. I’m in the “process of building” my rig(s) around HX Stomp. The plan is presets for using with Lonestar efx loop, an amp w/o a loop, and a Direct version for sound system. I’m nothing but amazed (head spinning) at the routing options available with the HX Stomp! Coffee in hand - back to making Presets.

Got a super similar setup as your mini board, HX stomp, NuX Morningstar (Bluesbreaker style OD), NuX Horseman (Klone), malleko compressor, trs switch for the stomp and a mini volume pedal. Broke down and got a Cioks DC-8 to power the whole thing but it works. I have presets for the stomp using the onboard amp/cabs and effects when going direct. I have a small 5 watt tube amp head and 2x10 cab I use if I want a real tube sound for those types of gigs, and in that scenario I use the stomp for time based effects only. Amp has an XLR cabsim line out and effects loop. Literally used both setups only twice this year before the pandemic hit lol! sounded great both ways! Loved the video man! Keep it up!

Nice setup(s)! That's the brilliant thing about the HX stuff, how well it works either by itself, or with a fully-fledged amp setup, just as a pedalboard. Nice to have so many choices!

I’ve been running a hybrid rig with analogue drive/fuzz pedals like this for the last year, the versatility of the HX stomp honestly astounds me! Also the fact that Line6 constantly updates their products with new amp/effects and features completely free of charge is something you rarely find these days! I also love the way it can be used as standard set up, wet/dry rig, home headphone rig and recording interface all for the price of a couple of stomp boxes 👍 I even patch in my tube heads via a load box and use the IRs to find the perfect cab sounds, truly a well designed product! 👌

It seems like as soon as I start to pull the trigger on a new rig, something better and cheaper comes out. With units like the Neural Quad Cortex, you get way more capabilities in a smaller package and it still ends up being cheaper than a rig like this. !!! 11:30 that is NOT a reverse polarity cable, it's just got a bigger center pin than a normal Boss style plug. The plug is 5.5x2.5mm, normal guitar pedal polarity, aka negative center. Otherwise; Great video, great sounds! The Helix stuff is so good these days. I _almost_ regret going down the guitar pedal rabbit hole instead of just getting a Helix Floor. Would've spent less money on mediocre gear, and spent more time playing guitar instead of planning the pedalboard and worrying about what power supply I should get etc.
@jackgriffithsmusic4 жыл бұрын
You're actually right - most 2.5mm adapters are reverse polarity (centre positive), which works fine for the older Line 6 units, but the HX stuff is centre negative. The Cioks setup & adapters don't adjust the polarity so it's still centre negative. Good point, using the Helix stuff is so practical, once you're dialled in it's just all about the playing, not the tweaking!

I've downsized (digital based) for about 70% of my pro gigs. I love my Mesa/Boogie MkIII Simulclass (fitted with a heavy EV12L) and a few of the artists that I regularly work with demand a "real amp" on stage just so they can hear a guitar sound from behind them or wherever they may walk on or off the stage. Incidentally, almost every front person/lead vocalist I've ever worked with wants ZERO guitar in their monitor(s) or side fills: they want to hear only the lead vocal in their wedge(s) to the exclusion of everything else; they hear the ambient sounds of electric guitar (amp), keyboards, bass and drums, the "old school" way. However, for about 70% of my gigging I use my little valve-driven Vox ToneLab ST, now via a DI box, which has noticeably improved the dynamics and clarity of my guitar sound(s), into either my own high-quality PA or that of a concert venue/festival sound hire company. For small gigs where I'm not the lead vocalist I sometimes hear my electric guitar via a powered monitor (PA cab) - I have two and, surprisingly, the cheaper one seems to sound the best for electric guitar (which isn't a full range instrument, just study the science of guitar frequencies), albeit not sounding like a real valve guitar amp - nothing compares! Given the choice of valve amp or floor pedal DI, I base my decision of which to use according to one thing: is there a live drummer (playing a real kit)? If the answer is yes then it'll almost always be my Mesa/Boogie combo (mic'd up or using my Sequis Motherload as a load box and almost never as an attenuator). But if I'm using backing tracks for occasional duo work, the floor pedal DI'd does the job admirably. Also, in my country band, Memphis Roots, our drummer uses a digital kit, so the Vox ToneLab ST DI'd works really well. Sound engineers and other musicians have told us that our band sound is so CLEAN! Our bass player still uses a bass amp (DI'd) because you need to push some air! But apart from that there's no loud amps or loud drums onstage and therefore hardly any spillage into the vocal mics (I'm the main lead vocalist, although the other guys share lead vocals too.) Just to reiterate, keeping the stage volume down and DI'ing as much as possible ensures a fabulously clean mix: we sound powerful, punchy and clean! Even so, overdriven and distorted guitar sounds are clearer - saying "cleaner distortion" is rather an oxymoron, but it really isn't. What I mean is, greater definition and clarity, be it clean or dirty guitar tones. In conclusion, small hybrid rigs such as yours are so eminently usable and the argument for using them is compelling. Those of us who listen critically have had to accept that modern technology is closing the perceived gap between old school and new school. After all, hearing yourself well enough, ideally with an inspirational sound, to really get into the music and deliver a great performance is what matters most. Please the audience and they'll love you! They'll want more...

@@jackgriffithsmusic thanks! Actually my biggest struggle is to have great recorded sounds in the tracks, I always feel that there's something weird in the frequency spectrum. Sounds really good. But if you don't own a hx effects or a stomp already, it would be easier to purchase a full helix or a lt and add the analog pedals
@jackgriffithsmusic4 жыл бұрын
That's true, the Helix is a great all-in-one. I just like this setup for the portability, as well as how I can integrate analog pedals easily and use it in a modular way.

Great tone and fabulous playing man, really enjoyed this video, I’ve watched it a few times now. Question- do you think you could get the same tones out of a stomp xl and the drive pedals in the loop? Just to save on the foot print? Thanks
@moments_with_IH2 жыл бұрын
The Stomp and XL are exactly the same; the XL just has more footswitches. So it's def possible to run it form the fx loop

Where in the chain in your hx stomp do you place the fx loop block? Or how is your chain?
@ArgyBarry4 жыл бұрын
Love the small modeller/analogue drive approach on a compact board. Why aren't you using the effects from the stomp? Aren't there more blocks available now? How does the HX effects compare to an analogue pedal board, in term of sound quality?
@jackgriffithsmusic4 жыл бұрын
Good question Doug - I'm using a few effects on the Stomp, like EQ, Spring verb, but just prefer the workflow on the HX effects, as it's what I've already been using. The quality of the effects is fantastic, though I think when it comes to drive pedals, the analog versions still have the edge.

@@jackgriffithsmusic Thanks Jack that's helpful. I have an Atomic Amplifire and a small analog board with some choice pedals on it (EHX pitchfork, Phase 90, EP Boost, Tubescreamer, Boss DD8, TC HOF2) that I use with my amp. I may try setting up some effects only patches on the Amplifire to use with my amp. The HX effects does look great though with scribble strips etc so I'm wondering whether it could replace my small board.

Enjoyed this video, cheers. I've had an HX Effects since it came out and just recently got a stomp and powercab+ and have been going through the process of integrating all three, setting up midi between them etc. Can I ask where in the chain your HX Effects is please? I'm going HX Effects>Stomp and running all the before-amp effects in the HX FX, but watching your video I think you might have gone the other way. Which might make more sense as I think post amp effects are probably more DSP heavy so it might be sensible to leave all that to the HX FX and let the Stomp concentrate on drives and amp modelling/IR?? But then I want the Stomp to be last thing in the chain to retain its use as an interface (suppose I could put the FX in the loop at the end of the chain). Gah! Any thoughts greatly appreciated, cheers.
@jackgriffithsmusic4 жыл бұрын
Sure, I'm going in to the Effects and have the Stomp board in one of its effects loops. That way I can have some blocks from the HX effects before the Stomp and some after. If you need to use the Stomp as an interface, you'll probably have to put the FX in the loop of the Stomp, as you say.

@@jackgriffithsmusic thanks, really appreciate the reply. I definitely think you've got the more adaptable approach, but yeah I'm a bit hamstrung by wanting to use the Stomp interface. I’m abit of a noob when it comes to pedals and amps Can you explain the difference of that set up playing through your studio monitors and recording that was as a pose to playing it through your amp and mic recording it ?
@jackgriffithsmusic3 жыл бұрын
Sure thing - with this setup, my ‘amp’ sound is coming from the Line 6 pedal, so no real amps are necessary. The studio monitors are just allowing me to hear the signal coming out of the HX stomp. Hope that helps 👍

@jackgriffithsmusic4 жыл бұрын
Good question - I have the Helix rack which I use for certain situations, and it is a fantastic all-in-one, but the Stomp & Effects works great when you need to have a super small footprint, plus it's modular, so if I don't need the extra effects and control, I can just use the Stomp board, which fits on the front of my guitar case!

@jackgriffithsmusic4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Andy - the Charlie Brown is in the FX loop, the Tumnus is in front of the Stomp. The entire stomp board runs in the fx loop of the HX effects, so I can have certain effects before or after the stomp. Hope that makes sense! Good luck with your rig.

My HX stomp hates all my overdrive pedals. I have the input impedence set to auto but if I'm using like a high gain marshall like the 2204 or plexi with the gain cranked up, none of my overdrive pedals sounds good. It gets ultra compressed and messy. My JHS Klon usually plays well with everything I plug into and sounds amazing boosting the kemper but the HX stomp just... it's gross. The only pedal I've had luck with is my Jackson Audio Prism but even that, I can't get the gain very loud at all. It's just barely cracked over unity but remains the cleanest and clearest of my drive/boost pedals. No idea what it causing them to have problems. (I know very little about the HX stomp. I've only had it for a weekend)
@jackgriffithsmusic4 жыл бұрын
Sounds interesting... have you checked that the input is set to 'instrument' and not 'line' level? Just a thought. In my experience, the HX takes pedals to the input really well!
