I'm now able to bring you the first MAJOR update to the new organ!!
This features pictures sent to me by Renatus throughout the entire process, and also includes videos of the organ being built by hand taken by me only this week!

BEAUTY IN SOUND, really like that curved computer screen! What they're doing is that they're testing the key action.

The large piece of wood that separates the left stop jamb from the right is referred to as the "key desk." At least that's the common name used in Canada. In a later clip they are adjusting the tracker touch keyboard with weights both for the easy travel before the key sounds half-way down in its travel and the beginning of contact closing, making the note sound. If they aren't all the same weight it will affect your playing. If they aren't to specification, others will find it weird when they play it. This is not to say that you can't have it set for a higher force for instance if you have just come from a church with an antique Dutch tracker organ and find your new keyboards to have a light touch. Rather than adjusting the keyboards, practice more. You will become accustomed to the feel. Where is the covet emoticon when you need one, and does commandment #10 also apply to organ consoles? I'm happy to see that you didn't include cup holders for your coke which is not compatible with keyboards.

Absolutely! I was very keen from the very outset that this is going to be a traditional console but at its heart is powered by something very modern. Ultimately though, even a modern H&H console like that of Canterbury Cathedral looks very traditional but is using the latest organ electronic technology. I’ll not be entirely sad to retire the cheap Chinese pedal switch that is now quite popular within the Hauptwerk community! Can’t wait for you to come and see it!

Dovetail wood joints were found in furniture placed in Egyptian tombs. One of the best and proper ways to connect wood without metal fasteners.

Richard, you must be beside yourself with excitement! I play 6 Hauptwerk organs on a console with moving drawknobs, and my biggest problem is trying to remember which stop I've assigned to what! Fascinating solution you have for that! You'll have a huge box of stems with all the organs you play!!

Then you and I are both having the exact same problem. My physical stops are fixed which means I have to squeeze my samples into an organ which is just too small. Playing organs like Gorlitz, Dudelange and Nancy is often painful because of this...

As for floor speakers, it’ll depend on the context. If you just need them for reference when practicing, then a few studio monitors with 8 inch drivers should do the trick.(Adam Audio TV8/TV7 are pretty good) But if you want a multichannel speaker array that’s suitable for live performances, you’ll want to look at some more ambient full range home theater speakers. (Something closer to some DefTech BP9040s)

Ryan - I currently have 6 Adam F7s connected to the organ, and I'll be doing more live-live performances from next year. That is, with a live audience in the music room so I need to have good quality speakers just like those DefTech ones. Do you have the BP9040s, or have you heard them?

@@beautyinsound Sorry for the truant reply, I just now saw this. I'm sure you'll find this out for yourself since you're now getting DefTech speakers, but I've heard them used in professional digital organ installations (i.e Marshall & Ogletree) and have been very impressed. The reasons I recomended those speakers is because they were designed with Home Theater in mind, where you want the most accurate and comprehensive sound to fill as much space as possible. Four should be more than enough to fill your living room with high quality sound for a live audience. Another reason these are used with organ instalations is that their bipolar nature (Drivers firing sound from from both sides) kind of mimics the acoustic nature of a pipe, which predominantly releases sound from two places, the mouth and the opening of the body. Hope this clarifies a few things. :)

Astonished that you don’t know what a dovetail joint is. It’s basic school level woodwork. And it’s so well known it has entered into speech as an idiom e.g if something connects or integrates in an easy and seamless way, it is said ‘to dovetail’, e.g “the two sections of the programne dovetailed together really well.” or “Your schedule and mine are dovetailing on Tuesday, so lets have the meeting then.” etc.

Very nice to see an amazing console in progress. I don't know the British guild standard, but I'm going to guess 29.5 inches D to D for pedalboard since no one else has made any guesses. Curious to hear more about your specific description of the ideal keyboard touch. Those springs looked to be parallel to the key sticks, but springs I've seen on some other older keyboards are mounted vertically on the ends of the keys. How does the touch differ? If there a 'giving way' as in a piano or perhaps tracker organ? As for Ciphering -- that's the bane of all MIDI based instruments in my experience and can result from any glitch in the continuum, either from console or software. Would be interesting to know why that has popped up recently. Any updates to Hauptwerk immediately before it started? Or different sample set that overtaxed the system? Anyway thanks for sharing. On my ToDo list is to build a Virtual Organ console, but I plan to make it as light and compact as possible for ease of moving. Organs can be real space and weight hogs!

15:45 Martin is using a plumb line to check horizontal alignment of pedalboard, not measuring distance to lower keyboard. Middle D over middle D, front of middle pedal sharps 240 - 270 mm back, on 3m and 4m consoles. Height to playing surface of lowest manual: 750 - 775 mm, typical height of a desk or table. Mind your knees on the drawer corners!

Almost... Martin is actually measuring the height between D and D. I know because about 3 seconds later I sat on the bench to see whether it felt right. The distance on this organ is 765mm which is H&H’s standard distance between D over D. You’re on it! The corners of the drawers will be smooth for this very reason! Are you talking from experience?

It's going to be gorgeous, and I'll bet not cheap! I'm curious about York Minster : I know the organ has had a big refurbishment, but has the console been refinished? Your shots of the lower parts look perfect, with no scratches or blemishes at all!

Yes - the 2 consoles at York have both been refurbished. A point to note however is that the detached nave console is different to the upstairs screen console, and it's the screen console we're basing the BIS organ on. The pictures of the pedalboard in the video are of the newly refurbished screen console.

Hello Richard, thanks for this interesting post. A very good project. I'm thinking of installing a UHT keyboard as well. What is your recommendation for the "difficulty" (maybe not the right English word for it) of the keyboard (in grams). I also think that the keyboard is extremely important for good articulation, but also for good motivation and inspiration.

I’m not sure how to interpret ‘difficulty’ in this context? Do you mean the weight of the keys? I don’t know the answer unfortunately, but the good news about the UHTs are they are completely adjustable.

Probably the surround version of Dudelange as that’s currently my favourite organ. Rotterdam will certainly be used, as will Gorlitz and Nancy. I cant wait to play this bigger sample sets without having to use Launchpads etc!! Is Rotterdam your favourite?

Does your console use Hauptwerk's built-in combination action and stepper, or does it use a separate system similar to what would be used on a pipe organ console?

Great question. My organ is totally dependant upon Hauptwerk, including the Setter, General Cancel, Generals and Sequencer. All coupler stops and pistons are individually assigned within Hauptwerk as well which is a bit fiddly for Gt-Pd and Sw-Gt as there are three couplers for each of these where as Hauptwerk only allows for a Primary and Secondary input. Worked out a way round that though! 👌

Question - Ages ago I saw an organ somewhere in Europe where the stops lit up. Has nobody come up with a system yet of having LED displays on the stops that change the name to match in the Hauptwerk divisions? Am I being a bit too advanced, technical or expensive??? It's looking brilliant though, I can't wait to hear it! I so would love one myself. Dread to think how much it is costing you??

Speaking as an American organist, it sounds like an interesting idea! I think the issue would be cost for sure, as well as size, LCD screens would need to be kind of big to be able to make the stop heads be readable. So cost and practicality.

I have seen some Hauptwerk organ videos. Also, one of my favorite organists, Gert van Hoef, has a Content organ in his house. and has done livestreams, playing it and their biggest model. Theodore Roosevelt said "do what you can with what you have. where you are". I'll look for you playing the finished organ. From Chicago, U.S.A.

After Renatus assembles the console in the in shop, can it be disassembled into manageable pieces to that it can be shipped and reassembled in your house? Or is the console a single piece other than the pedal board?

Good question, and I think the answer is that it'll be one complete piece of furniture (as you say, apart from the pedal board and bench). The side panels are one long piece of oak so there'll be nowhere where it can be disassembled. It's going to heavy..... VERY heavy!!

Dove-tailing used to be the norm for all cabinetmaking work that involved joining sides. Curious about why you're getting a swell pedal on the solo organ rather than on the choir organ.

What do you mean about the swell pedal? The two pedals will be configurable within Hauptwerk to whichever enclosed division I choose. The swell is nearly always enclosed, so that’s one pedal. The solo is usually enclosed, and the choir is only sometimes enclosed. I had originally thought I’d have three pedals but in the end I’m happy with two.

Indeed! That’s why I chose this one, and it goes down to 15Hz meaning there’s plenty of bass space. It’s also a very nice piece of furniture with an external remote.

@@beautyinsound it's 6dB down at 15Hz, meaning only a quarter of the sound pressure compared with at, say 40Hz. So an equalization curve will need to be applied to flatten the response curve. That's true for any installation where accurate reproduction is required. That said, you may want a larger room for it and/or accoustics treatment of all the walls, and ceiling otherwise the room modes caused by reflections off of hard flat surfaces will negatively affect the result. You wouldn't regret adding good accoustic treatment.

Weird design - no resting place for foot in the front. When organist is not playing pedals must hold his legs in the air. Very uncomfortable!

Resting place for feet are on the swell pedals and on the organ bench. Very comfortable!

@@beautyinsound I don't agree. Swell pedals have absolutely different purpose. They could be used as a support only when swells are closed. When they are open, they do not offer any support. The best support is a hard edge between tones 'B' and 'C' and 'E' and 'F'. From there is the best starting and orientation point of reaching pedals. I played on meny organs without proper support and always it was a bad experience. Only poor teachers can suggest holding legs back on organ bench :) I'm sure that many organists would appreciate moving pistons from places which I was mentioning and making right resting-support place for feet.

@@sureevennot3418 What you're talking about is only commonly found on baroque instruments - not American/english electropneumatic. The swell pedals make for a fine footrest, and in all honesty only snobbish hoity-toity people who don't work in church services refuse to put their feet on the organ bench. Organ benches are built to hold your feet, that's why they have a bottom rail!! Also, Richard doesn't have to listen to your opinion. After all, it's his organ, and his money that paid for it...
