Yeah, DS, SM and BX as well as CX had been beautiful cars back then. But looking at the C3, C4, C5, etc. nowadays I don't want to own such cars. Xsara and Xantia had been still kind of "ok" cars. I hope that PSA - I apologize - Stellantis will bring beautiful cars to the customers one day. But honestly... I don't think that there will be a reliable car soon.

I am also looking for one ... and there are quite a number available .. which look decent and worthwhile from the pictures .. @ulrich_badmecanique
@ulrich_badmecanique 3 жыл бұрын
You don't really have to worry about engine or mileage really, they aren't "bulletproof" but besides the cooling system, the XUs and TUs are pretty damn strong. Most go from worn out timing belts or blown headgasket from negligence, and its the same on diesels really. I dont think I would attempt buying one that doesnt have working hydraus, in truth its a fairly easy to work on and maintain system, but a break can be a pain to diagnoses... Besides early BXs rust a lot, a mighty lot, even here in france with our kind climate

@@aureliobrighton1871 Toi aussi ! Well, even if its super low mileage, and I don't know the market there early TRS go for a lot, rare to find them under 3k€ here but thats still a lot. You can get a 1.6 RS trims for super cheap tho, and they're just as neat

@aureliobrighton1871 3 жыл бұрын
@@ulrich_badmecanique Un bon 1er mai Monsieur:). And thank you for your last reply. Yes, something tidy between 2 and 3k€ would be ideal. My plan is to find the right one for a long and 'relaxed' journey into France. Hence the idea of paying in advance rather than for repairs lateron. On the other hand, also improving it en route where it is at home could be a nice little adventure. Anyway, first we have to come to terms with other bugs. In that sense, best wishes.

I bought a used BX in 1996. It had 110k km on the clock. I loved that car. Unfortunately the engine broke down about two years later. Since I knew a guy who had worked in a Citroen garage I decided to replace the engine. I sold it in 2000 when it had 235k km on the clock. Well, I should rather say the guy at the car junkyard gave me little money for using the spare parts. While I made negative experience with the engine and electrical system I never had problems with the hydraulic system - although people told me that it would be the first part to fail. I guess If I had decided for a diesel engine (like my father did back in the 80's) I'd probably ended up with replacing the alternator as the most expensive part. All other parts (e.g. tyres, brake parts, etc.) were quite cheap. The next car I bought was a pre-owned R19 sedan with automatic gearbox. That purchase I regret the most. After just 17 months of driving I only received 10% of the price I had paid for it. Dividing the overall money I had spent on this car by the months I owned it it was the most expensive car I've ever had until today - and I am not even considering adjusted money value due to inflation.
@ulrich_badmecanique
@ulrich_badmecanique 3 жыл бұрын
Must have been an quite an unlucky draw! In all honesty by the time the hydraulics were put on the BX, the system had existed for almost 30 years. If you know what you're doing its a simple and ingenious system that requires little to no attention. But people panicked anytime something went wrong back in the days, not helping its reputation. I still see a few r19s around, they're generally agreed to be good cars but one bad experience is enough to keep you away!
@johncatty6560
@johncatty6560 3 жыл бұрын
@@ulrich_badmecanique Well, I guess the opinion about the hydraulics dated back from experiences long time before I bought my BX. Funny side note: when turning on subtitles I read "bakes" when you said "BX" ;) I really wish I had purchased the BX with a diesel engine. At that time the PSA diesel engines had been top-notch ones - especially in terms of fuel consumption and durability. But I was a young guy back then and I wanted some faster vehicle. You probably see as many R19 as I see Golf Mark II here in Germany ;) I got rid of my R19 because the company I was working for at that time had offered me to use a company car. I bought my wife a Twingo which she was driving for almost 10 years. While we have switched to driving VW cars nowadays there are still french cars with my relatives: a Scenic, a Twingo and an Espace.

@@ulrich_badmecanique Before I bought my BX I had a 1984 Peugeot 205 GRD. It should have taught me the lesson that French diesel cars are reliable and robust. Unfortunately I had listened to the juvenile voice in my head that told me: "A diesel car is a slow car. I want something faster!" I am looking forward to see more about your BX project. Your car reminds me of the BX "Leader" my father owned once - 33 years ago. You've mentioned that your daily car is a 2.1td. May I ask which car it is? I remember the XM was available with a 2.1td engine - which was odd. Because most the manufacturers had offered 2.0, 2.2 or 2.5l diesel engines at that time.

Are you aware the interior cloth is not original BX but from the series 2 CX Turbo? I was not aware aware of it being reused in the BX but it looks great. I'd still love to have it in my XM. It will however be a miracle if this BX is also rustfee below the surface. Although not as bad as 70's cars the BX has been designed more to hide rust then to avoid it. Check out the front subframe for starters. A great project though. My first car was a humble BX14E. :-)
@ulrich_badmecanique
@ulrich_badmecanique 3 жыл бұрын
That velour interior was specific to the 86' GT on the BX, but I didn't know it was also use on the CX! I'm lucky to have an almost rust free model, the subframe is in excellent shape (Prolly thanks to the massive oil leaks), only the rear floor pan and suspension arm carry some light surface rust, but I'll make sure to take care of it once I'm done with the rest
@marcbrasse747
@marcbrasse747 3 жыл бұрын
@@ulrich_badmecanique Yep, oil leaks can be a real subframe saviour. Having a truly rustfree BX is really a big bonus anyway. If I where you I would however have a look at that cracked lower corner of the plastic side windows. Although the parts directly below them are also plastic water still might get to some long term rusy trap below. My advice would be to replace them. No glory is to be had from trying to save them. I actually like the closed C-pillar more but that would of course not be very GT. That "fish-grate" cloth was indeed from the CX Turbo. The series 2 interior with that very cloth is as far as I am concerned a big highpoint in interior design, even when you look outside the Citroën brand. It's on a par with the earliest DS dashboard. Not that the early BX dashboard isn't nice. I always found the satelites a good solution. You could just switch the indicaters off when your hand where passing by anyway. Very natural! I stilll have a sweet spot for the BX but couldn't resist upgrading when I was able to afford a 3 year old, basic XM. I've only owned 4 cars in my whole life. That BX and after that 3 XM's. The last one got a replacement engine from a Xantia Turbo CT two years ago! Take care and much succes with the project! :-)

@@marcbrasse747 I guess the BX had to be a lot more tame for the sake of saving the brand and pleasing PSA. But its so painfully 80s, I absolutely love it. As for the rear "custode windows" as we call them, I didn't know rust could form there. I was considering swapping them for later ones, I think citroen changed the coating for the facelift so they age much better the operation isn't too hard, finding some is harder. But for now I'll probably just sand them down and clear coat them like plastic's headlights. I like to think the upholstery's pattern is a bunch of little citroen's logos :p
@marcbrasse747
@marcbrasse747 3 жыл бұрын
@@ulrich_badmecanique Of course the pattern is meant to be like Citroen logo's but I stiil think it looks more like fish grates. Maybe becaus we call such a hooked repeating motif "fish grate" here in The Netherlands. We used to be fishers, you know? :-) I am not sure about the damaged "custodes" leading to rust.
