Actually there is merit in buying powerful amplifiers and people by and large use too inadequate amplifier power for dynamic headroom, especially fior frequencies less than 1khz. I run 93dB efficient speakers using 100wpc mono-blocks and the difference over using the “adequate” 35wpc amp I have is staggering at similar volumes. Current provision for bass frequencies matters as does low amplifier output impedance for optimum control.

Glad to hear you jumped on the PMC ship. Out of the 5 systems in my house, 4 use PMC. There is something very special about that midrange driver and the transmission line. I am always hearing new things in a mix that I have not herd on other systems. There is a reason so many mastering studios use PMC. The only downside.....shit recordings really sound like shit! Cheers, JB

I am a fan of transmission line speakers, and they have gotten far more advanced over the last several decades. The qualities you spoke of - effortless and articulate bass and open midrange that sounds like an open baffle - are what I hear with good transmission line designs.

I am so pleased you like them. I purchased the original Fact 12 back in 2015 and I still love them. My situation was the reverse of yours as I knew I was not getting the best out of them. However, I have been fortunate enough to be able to upgrade my digital source components, preamp and power amp to the point where I am really happy with the sound. It is testament to the speakers that they can reveal the improvements made by the rest of my system.

Hi Hans , Great Tutorial on loudspeaker cabinets , PMC , I built my transmission line loudspeaker cabinet about 40 years ago it’s time is approximately 1 1/2 m in height, the drivers used to be Peerless, But unfortunately one of the traitors decided to pack up so I’ve now replaced all driver units for SEAS Tweeters 27TBCD / Woofer U22REX/PL . They have changed completely, I did not change the crossover unit in anyway. They have now seem to come alive, I will try and have a listen to the PMC but not sure where they are available, I find your territorial on Audiophile very interesting, keep up the great work. In a lower price class, but in line with your speaker criteria and comments, I think you would also enjoy Spendor SP2/3r2 speakers. One of my main criteria for loudspeakers is that they are 3-way in general, with a wide-dispersion dome mid-range driver and these speakers meet that criteria. If the mid-range reproduction is not persuasive, what's the point of a loudspeaker. This statement is actually intended as a compliment and would make me consider the PMCs. as they are 3-ways with a mid-range dome.

Actually it is for every 3dB increase, you need to double the power input. If you want to double your volume, you will need ten times the power. on another note, those speakers look very good but some of the crossover parts look cheap. Bar core inductors and sand cast resistors should be avoided at all costs in high end crossovers. Upgrading these in the future would be your best upgrade path. Happy listening!

I was very curious about your direction choice. PMC are hard to hear in the US. I have heard the little ones and they are very good. MSRP of about $20k USD would put them on par with the ATC 50 Passives, Probably nothing low enough from Wilson Benesch. The MBLs at $12k sounded quite good at Axpona. I used to play live in bands a lot and have also personally had auditions of the Fact 12 Signature. I'm super impressed with the performance and I've never heard midrange like this from other speakers. Other towers I'm considering are Dynaudio Confidence 60, Perlisten S7t and perhaps Borresen, all of which are considerably pricier, yet I find myself going back to that midrange beauty of the PMCs. How can you generate deep bass from 2 X 13cm speakers ? I really doubt that's possible...
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
@TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel 2 жыл бұрын
The output of woofers is defined by the displacement they are able to generate. And that’s a result of the diameter and the travel of the cone, in conjunction with the cabinet design. In this case two 14 cm (not 13) woofers are of the long throw type so they will produce more air displacement than some other woofers. Using two woofers doubles that, resulting in a cone surface of 1230 cm2 while one 18 cm woofer has a surface of only 1017 cm2. Then the transmission line cabinet optimally uses the air displacement at the rear of the cone almost doubling that. But you could have established that yourself by simply listening.
