How about a Breitling Navitimer on a black leather strap? I know it might be bit large for you but it`s a classic with a fantastic heritage, plus it won`t break the bank. I`ve got the ok from she who must be obeyed so one of those could be in my sights. Also If i bought it from WoS i`d be a previous customer for the grail watch for my 70th birthday: a yellow gold Daydate

For a classy chap like yourself, you must acquire a proper dress watch. A.Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin is rootbeer money. For a little bit more, we have Vacheron Constantin Traditionelle & Patek Philippe Calatrava.

Do you hear that little voice deep down inside your skull whispering to you, Ash? The voice that is saying "Patek Philippe!" :-) (I know all about this, because I've made the same bitter-sweet journey myself. Sure, you can take the scenic route via Jaeger LeCoultre, Blancpain, etc. But you can save quite a bit of time and money by cutting right to the chase...)

Congrat on your new watch. I had the same experience as you several years ago when I tried on the 39mm Explorer and just like you I walked away without the watch. Thereafter I bought a preowned 36mm Explorer. When Rolex introduced the Rolesor Explorer, I could not miss it. I was fortunate to buy one from my AD which I have a long term relationship.

Congratulations ash! Great piece! I started a new relationship with my local family owned AD a few months back by buying a 114200 Airking with white dial and explorer numerals. I absolutely adore it. Smaller dials work so much better with the 3 6 9 dial. Its a good news Rolex day all around because after a chance walk in my AD informed me I’m next in line for my blue dial DJ36 which they’re expecting around mid March, so fingers crossed! You were spot on about smaller ADs, they are so much better to work with, you’re not just a number. It’s interesting you managed to get this from WoS. Tbh I’m not sure what’s best to do. I think I will give my local AD a while to fulfill my order first then maybe shop around.

Watched your previous item on buying Rolex. I stay about 60 miles from Glasgow, visited the Rolex AD's about 2 weeks ago. Put a note of interest in on an Explorer and no date Submariner. Got a call today and picked up an Explorer. Still trying to get used to the size. It's very small. All my other watches are 42mm+. Omega Speedmaster Professional, Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean and Grand Seiko gmt.
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 2 жыл бұрын
I also found the Exp to seem a little small when first worn. I was accustomed to 40mm pieces generally (Sub & GMT) but after a short while, I came to appreciate the much more comfortable and practical benefits of the Exp. Remember, it is first and foremost a field watch and as such needs to be worn without causing obstruction to one's clothing and be unobtrusive in daily wearing situations. I must say that I have been rather taken by my Exp and actually really love the 36mm (under 35mm in actual measurement). No regrets at all. So glad that Rolex took the bold step to return this piece to its original size.

Congratulations Ash! My new favourite of your collection! Quite the range you own now. I don't have a horse in the race myself, but I do find it interesting that the Rolex retail strategy seems to be prioritizing return customers with an extensive purchasing history for high (resale) value items. So essentially a study in how to reinforce privilege... Not that I am criticising your ownership Ash, as I feel that you are perhaps the exception to this stereotype, being a true watch lover and 'everyman', but it does somewhat strike me as bizarre. Thanks again for a great video!

Hello Ash, i could not think of a person who would wear the Explorer with more tact and grace. A gentleman as yourself could be in the woods or fields with your wellingtons, your Barbour Jacket and your Explorer, head into town, pick up some errands, go to the pub for a drink, head home for a nice evening meal and your new watch would fit the bill.Then head in to the city and be booted and suited and wear the Explorer and still have a proper watch. Excellent choice.

Oh and you’re spot on about human interaction. Really interesting conversation when I was at my local AD yesterday, I was having a nice chat about watches with the sales assistant, when she went to the till to log my purchase (I bought a Tissot for my mums xmas present) she came back and just mentioned that she’d seen that I’d seen “X” previously and that I was exactly the type of person they were looking for in a client. I found it interesting because “X” is a sales assistant that works in their other store a few miles away, so they must have a computer generated profile that logs any interactions you have with them….even if you just stroll in for a chat and a coffee, there’s no other way shed have known otherwise!

I’m sure you’ve read/heard the speculation that the Explorer was the original “Literary” James Bond Rolex, as Ian Fleming wore an Explorer, and in the novels he never explicitly named the model. The notoriety of the Explorer (vs. the Submariner) during the time frame when the novels were written would seem to add credence to this theory. Of course Connery wore a Submariner starting with Dr. No, and began that model’s association with the film Bond. My apologies if you already covered this in a previous video; I just subscribed, and I’m still catching up! Enjoy the new watch, and keep up the good work!👏👏🙏👍

Congrats!!! That's one versatile timepiece. Works perfect with a suit, casual apparel, summer apparel, sport apparel, and outdoor apparel. I picked up my Explorer in September. First purchase from an AD that is a 5 minute walk from my home. Since then I can't take this off. It becomes part of me, and people do not notice it. It doesn't show off, it just is. Killed my desire for other watches for a long time. Honestly I don't want a Submariner anymore. Maybe a white Roman dial Date Just on a jubilee, or a 36mm OP dark blue dial. This one is a keeper, a do all timepiece. One and done

I went in in April and this jeweller (who I have no previous with) has got me this and a Perpetual in that time. Hi, you say the manager of the store told you that "the flow is no different to what it's ever been before". That's not what I am being told. I was told that since March this year, they have only received two Explorers. That suggests supply is being diverted. But where?

I so agree with you in the final remark about the strange experience of buying a Rolex as a consumer. I think it hits many people’s self pride down and turn them away from wearing a Rolex - now looks a bit like a negative sign from someone who explores the grey market silliness. Many of my friends who wished to buy a Rolex in the UK now turned to IWC. A much better, more positive and civilized symbol of elegance than Rolex. I love my Rolexes too, but I start to wear more of my IWC. Absolutely enjoy it whilst not being judged negatively.

@@coffeeboyclips1973 oh dear, that’s my IWC watch too. Don’t know how to explain but I am getting much more confident wearing IWC than Rolex these days, perhaps because it takes me out of the crowd. Something really shows subtly yet strongly a smart, sophisticated and clever type of choice. As I commented above, the strange @$$-kissing process of getting a Rolex from AD really turns me off from wearing a Rolex these days :))

@@Gravitas___ I went into a rolex ad and enquired about the new explorer, apparently they are not adding any more people to the wait list for 2 years, I told the sales assistant that I don't believe in wait lists and Im not waiting years for a simple 3 hand steel watch. Delighted for you Ash! Re future consolidation, my suggestion: - Explorer - DJ - Rootbeer Rationale: - Explorer to takeover from the Sub as your 3 handed beater - I can’t imagine when you would wear the Pepsi over your DJ or Rootbeer. Plus, no sentimental attachment to the Pepsi… you didn’t even know that you were on the list 😉 However, unless you need the cash, there is no rush to sell anything, prices only going one way for the foreseeable future... Global demand will continue to increase and Rolex won’t respond by increasing supply Loving the videos Chap 👍🏻

You make some solid points and I have to say that I agree with your 3 watch choice - I would change not one of those at all. I will retain the others for a while, but for sure my Tudor BB GMT is definitely on the endangered list as the most likely to leave at the moment.
@tims2092
@tims2092 2 жыл бұрын
Sale of the Tudor makes sense for sure. I guess in hindsight, that watch was a bit of a false God when it first came out in that you’re getting the Tudor brand name and a Pepsi bezel but in reality, the main reason someone would buy it is because they can’t get their hands on a Rolex GMT. Additionally, it’s a big watch! But of course… all in hindsight. And I guess it has served its purpose well in scratching the Rolex steel sports itch. I’ll be interested to hear your 1 year ownership review of the Explorer and specifically how much you’re able to bond with it. Personally, I think it is the perfect one watch collection and therefore you can well understand why owners (with the Explorer as their only watch) get so close to them… wearing it to say your kid’s wedding, a parent’s funeral, a successful pitch at work etc but also whilst weeding the garden on the weekends. However, in your case, for those special occasions I guess you would opt for the DJ or GMT and therefore, your Explorer’s purpose is just as a beater and a dam expensive one at that! Additionally, if the s hit the fan and you urgently needed cash, I suspect the last watch to go will always be your DJ given the sentimental connection. So the question is, how close can you get to the Explorer sentimentally if you don’t wear it for those special occasions and it’s not your most special watch?
@TheChapsGuide

@@tims2092 You have hit the nail on the head there, you can only wear 1 watch at a time and hence I do have too many to find their way into regular use. I had a very special occasion the other day and thought very hard about which watch to wear. In the end the DJ was the only choice, as it will always be my favourite. The Explorer has indeed become my daily watch and now I find I only wear the GMTs on weekends. The watch I have worn least of late (other than the Tudor) is my Submariner, but I end to favour that in summer, where that Glidelock bracelet is the king of comfort. We will have to see how the next year pans out - I do promise to do a 1-year update and a proper review of the Explorer in due course. But I feel sorry for that Pepsi. After all the hype and fanfare, in reality, I have worn it for a few initial weeks, then left it in the safe in favour of the humble Explorer.
@tims2092
@tims2092 2 жыл бұрын
Although the vintage Pepsis are beyond cool, the latest incarnation is so overhyped. They lack a bit of character with the ceramic bezel and the delicate looking jubilee just don't work with the maxi case (that goes for the batgirl as well)... but of course, all personal opinion. But I can imagine you feel a little guilty (I would) at receiving such a coveted watch and then leaving it in the safe. Glidelock is a nice to have but I find the easylink extension more than good enough. For me, a sub is also a little like the Explorer. Ie if you wear it everyday, good times and bad, you create that special bond but just wearing it as a beater 🤷🏻‍♂️ I think the real gem for you is the Rootbeer. Can see that watch increasing exponentially over the next 5-10 years as the market swings back to two tone and the GMT complication is really the one to have. The other thing is, given the sentimental value, I imagine the DJ ends up on the wrist for the most important family occasions and then the Explorer takes pride of place on a day to day basis, around the house, popping out to the shops etc. Which makes the rootbeer that much more special for those "in between" occasions. And actually elevates those moments for you because you can have a wry smile to yourself each time you check the time. You've got a fantastic collection there and it really does go to show, if you're genuinely passionate about watches, patient and willing to put in the graft with the ADs you get your reward!

Lots of recent videos on youtube unboxing the Explorer; do you think Rolex has increased production and watches are trickling down to ADs a little faster?
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think so, I base this on the fact that I placed an order for this watch at 5 ADs in my area (3 of which I had previous Rolex purchase history) and only one has come back with a watch. I suspect there are more videos on YT due to this being a new watch for 2021 and hence being more interesting for YT review. Just my observations and may be wrong.

Wow awesome! Well deserved. I think your closing comments resonated with me. Your collection is very similar to mine in that you have “explored” the Rolex range. So, datejust, gmt etc. If I was a betting man I would say your likely to reduce the root beer. It’s a breathtaking piece for sure but I think you will reach for your Pepsi or Explorer as a daily rather than the root beer. Congratulations once again!

@@TheChapsGuide indeed it is. It’s a difficult one. Listen to your gut as you will only live to regret it further down the line and Rolex is becoming a more difficult to acquire as the years go on. If you have a relationship with WoS for example I would look to downsize with the root beer and purchase something of a even higher quality horological wise such as AP or Patek. So either an AP Royal Oak (41mm) on a black dial or Patek Calatrava 6119 or 5196 for example for the cash earned. Just an idea. Good luck and keep up the awesome content!

Wow you’ve had a very good year with your 3 acquisitions! I recently picked up my Submariner 124060 a month ago after expressed interest with my AD in June - so just being direct with your AD that you’re a collector and just go about building relationship in a nice way does/can help. The AD in question l already have a spend history with: Tudor Black Bay Bronze 2017 and Speedmaster in 2020 - both watches that I love and purchased to wear and enjoy. Then after picking up the Sub, I got another call 2 weeks ago from my AD to offer another gem: Tudor Pelagos FXD. So my current rotation consists of: Submariner 124060, Omega Speedmaster 1863, Tudor FXD, Sinn 103 sa BE and Sinn 856 S UTC. I’ll be popping back into my AD soon for a chat as to what add next to the collection 😅 perhaps see if they can source me the new Submariner Starbucks or Batman…

I shall be interested to find if I have to wait a similar number of months that you did, before mine arrives. I have a good relationship with my AD.
