I bought this "Celtic 14" lathe. It has a reach of 500mm and a swing of 190mm. It's in poor condition and very dirty.

I bought my first lathe for my home shop in 1991, decommissioned Lodge and Shipley. It was made in 1913 and was used in production its whole life before I got it. Was originally a flat belt drive off a line shaft, but was converted to an electric motor at some point. Anyways, the point being that if you look down the front way, you can see the dip from wear. The cross slide has about 1/4" slop and still has the lantern tool post. It was the only lathe I had for about 15 years, repaired most of the worn out parts and learned to compensate for the wear on the ways. I have decent machines now but still have that first one and plan on doing a full restore including having the bed reground as my retirement gift to myself when that happens.

Lol . I think you may have the early signs of the same disease that i have , that's why there is no more room in my new workshop ! That new lathe looks to have a massive bed cross section . That has an asymmetrical way bed , check the wear on the inside ( small side ) of the front way . It most likely will have the most wear on it & will cause the tool to move away from the work while only moving down a small amount . It can be fixed . Anyway , it should keep you off the streets for a while ! Good one . 👍

@Rustinox9 ай бұрын
Yes, that tail stock has been mistreated.
@stuartlockwood96459 ай бұрын
Hi Michel ☺ well it seems to run nice and smooth for an old lathe, and the bed doesn't look damaged, if you can get the tailstock working good enough to support a workpiece then I'd be tempted to try turning a long test piece to see if there's any run out, like the problems you had whith your currant lathe, at least before you start spending time and money on it, hopefully whith your skill and a lot of elbow grease it will end up a good machine. Thanks for another interesting video, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart UK.

That amount of wear on the ways isn't as terrible as it first appears, because it will cause the tool to move up and down, rather than in and out, so the variation at the workpiece won't be as much as you might expect.

My tailstock had a lot of play in the quill I bored it with a boring bar in a 4jaw chuck. I put the tailstock, with weights on top, in front of the carriage to push it towards the chuck. It is not ideal and it won't cut smoothly, but its much easier and faster than a line boring setup. When close to the final dimension I used a 46mm reamer in the chuck to finish the bore in the same way I bored it from 40mm to 46mm. The old quill was MT3, the new one I made MT4 so it's an upgrade The new quill was made from a 46mm chrome plated hydraulic rod. It is ideal that the quill is very hard, it will last much longer
@Rustinox9 ай бұрын
Souds like a very nice upgrade.
@RichardKinch9 ай бұрын
Running the spindle sounds like the spindle bearings are brinelled, typical of old machines that have been abused (someone hammering on chuck, etc). If so, you will have to replace them at great effort and expense. Otherwise you will never get smooth or accurate cuts.

I don't know yet. I have to check first.

i ran a dial indicator the length of a 24 inch 1 1/2 in hardened shaft, dialed in to zero with the 4 jaw, and a live center. .002 deviation from the bead wear, It was something i never dreamed of. and i firmly beleive much of it was in the shaft itself.

i leveled the machine today. i have a 3in x 12 in piece of aluminum. I turned it down until it was clean all the way around. I ran the dial over the top and it was a repeat of the steel bar it turned out less then .001 end to end. The dial fixture flexed about .0005 from drag, but its actually less then .001 overall.
