Shallow bass drums are gonna be the new trend I can feel it. Steve Gadd gets it. I'm sure I'd love this kit. I adore my little Ludwig Questlove kit. First ever real matching kit and it's fantastic.

I play a Breakbeats as well, I like that it come with a 14" snare, the fullness from that makes the rest of the kit appear to be larger sizes.

@fartpooboxohyeah8611 I work in a drum store and have played most of these kits in showcases before stocking them. They all sound good, but all the staff agreed that the Yamaha Hip sounds the best. It sounded so good that myself and two others bought one that day. What really sold us on it was the kick drum. It sounds like a huge kick, unlike other compact kits where the sound is very hollow and box-like. The Yamaha representative we work with explained that the Hip was one of the most prototyped drum products they have ever made. They really wanted to avoid sounding like every other compact kit on the market. So, they delved into the science of it, using birch wood instead of maple because birch works better with lower frequencies. They also made the kick drum 20 x 8, rather than the 18 x 12 kicks you usually get from other brands. It's truly an innovation in the compact drum space. You won't find any other big brand at this moment offering this type of kit with those sizes and such a great sound, all at quite an affordable price too.

i bought this exact kit a year ago, and couldn't be happier. Nothing but compliments from every band and musician I've used it with. I absolutely love playing it. The 20" shallow bass drum just has more bottom end and punch than the micro 16" kick drums . I also present it as an option to other musicians doing duos/trios/"acoustic" gigs....I tell them it's a step above a cajon, but not quite my full big rig kit in 13/16/24 sizes. Take your pick, and i'll show up accordingly. I also always use a Senheiser e901 boundry mic inside the kick and its just the perfect sound. You can't lose, it wins in every room.

I love the sound of this kit as well and I’ve watched all the videos but I have not seen in person. I can say though that I have not been pleased hearing the floor time with the snare on but it sounds phenomenal with the snare off. Do you ever play the floor time with the snares on?

@steves1592 yes. I run a coated G1 snare top, 300 clear snare side, Gmad clear bass drum batter and coated eq3 front head. Coated g2(or g1) on Tom batter top and clear g1 bottom heads. All Evans. Works for me. Good luck

For almost 15 years I "compact gigged" with a Pearl Rhythm Traveler kit which had the same sized snare and bass drum as the Hip does. Never had any problem with cracking or thudding -- the bass and snare sounded great. Where the Hip has it beat is the toms sound spectacular, and the RT's toms needed better heads, some moongel and a prayer that they'd stay tuned enough to get through the show.

The crash on your far right is the only cymbal I would use with my kit, the sound just blows the rest of your cymbals away, that's not a knock on your other cymbals, that cymbal sounds better than 80% of the cymbals I've heard in my life

I just got this kit and it is quite amazing for the size. The kick sounded horrible until I got Evans EMAD 2, now it sounds near perfect. I changed the heads on the toms and snare as well. Stock heads are usually garbage, but even more so in the case of this kit. Change the heads, tune it up well and you will have a tight little kit that sounds better than most other full size kits. Bro…awesome video as per usual, and I can’t praise this kit and Yamaha enough. I was using a Ludwig Breakbeats for a while, but I needed something to fit my 4x6’ area in my apartment. The HipGig was beyond perfect and fit to a tee. I have this in Classic White and added a 11x14” rack Tom (13” racks/floors were never my thing). This is my first Yamaha kit, too. SO I own a SCB kit purchased in Oct 2023 (w addl 8" tom, and 5.5 steel snare, subsequently added on), and it really is a fantastic kit. I'd owned an impulse-buy SCB snare I grabbed at a shop one day for about a year before that, great workhorse snare live. With that context - the first bar you drop on this Hip version? Oh my. That kit is fattt. I'm 54 seconds into this review and already sold haha

Sounds awesome but i never move it. My next drum investment will be a kit like yours. Great review, you're the go to guy for drumming and still my favorite channel, thanks again

Been using this kit for about a year and I am completely happy with it! You can fit all the drums in a 18/20 hardcase so you are carrying all your drums in 1 bag. I use it with every live gig at this point, it's easy for me to carry and it sounds amazing to play. The kick sounds like a proper kick drum. With other compact drums I always found that the small kick drums sound like your hitting a box, no real tone. I think its because the yamaha kick is big and shallow rather than deep and small like you see with other compact kits.

I don't know why but a 20" Bass has that effect I've got a Pearl 22x16 Pearl but sometimes I'll use a 20x14 Ludwig and have learned to never bury the beater into that 20, usually on a small stage our piano is about 3feet in front of me, that beast will knock her wig off...and she doesn't where a wig.👍👍

I love my Hip Kit. I did not add a port to the front BD Head. It already has enough punch and the non ported head adds a lot or resonance. I just ordered the regular Birch toms 10, 12, 13 and 14 sizes with a double tom mount that fits on the BD. The toms won't add much space on the BD and a 14 Floor tom vs the 13 Snom also doesn't take up much space. I will pick what toms fit the space. The BD is great. I just bought them in a whim and just love them. I will also use for recording a specific sound. The BD has enough bottom especially if you don't bury the beater and the right beater type. You can really lay in to the BD and it's solid. Perfect BD for smaller gigs, recording and I'll tune it for Jazz.

Those Hips are swingin'! Great kit! Personally, I went with the DW Frequent Flyer designed by Peter Erskine, mainly because of the 20x14" bass drum. I compared that DW Erskine kit to the Yammies, Sonor, Ludwig, PDP, and Gretsch kits, and it won hands down for sounding like a full sized kit in bop sizes. Not the cheapest option, but definitely sounds the best in a tiny package. You can make anything sound good, Rob! ...and sell it too! ;)

Truth of the matter, though, pair a Yamaha EAD10 with *any* sized kit, and you can make a bop sound like an arena kit! So, Yamaha is still winning the game, even with my DW. lol

I agree. Love these things 🔥 Eyes closed it’s virtually indistinguishable when it’s tuned low and mic’d up. You wouldn’t miss your 22”

I cut my drums into three segments. I have so many pancake shells its endless. I just need more rims. I didnt see a point jn having full depth as i only intend to play my kit in my place or around my vehicle. Most bars have a kit. And ill most likely never play a show. I saved myself a ton of cash. I filled my panxake bass with the cloudy stuffi g from a chesp pillow and a floorjack bar inthe kick longways. Emad reso and batter. Sounds phenomenal a n d you can always make custom mounts on your pancakes to remount them together for more depth but think about it. Do you really need full volume? Anyways all custom travel kits are ridiculously expensive. If you find a cheap kit (ive found a whole excel for 25$ before) you can make MANY travel kits. Just be good with a 20 dollar scary electric saw

Rob, you've helped me a lot the last few years, but I have to say, Yamaha drums are very disappointing for drummers who gig. How can they create drumsets without memory locks? For example, on the tom holders, no memory locks. Who decided not to add memory locks? What drummer wants to keep adjusting his kit when setting up? I'm into setting up and tearing down quickly. I want Yamaha but they have idiots creating drums and hardware which has the same issue, no memory locks. Yamaha must not gig. I'm going with Tama. They actually have a brain.
