I haven't thought much about my off road recovery gear after I initially purchased it. I've rarely used my gear as most off road recovery situations have been with other people's rigs and mostly their recovery gear as well. I learned a ton from Justin over at Factor55. It made me realize there might be more folks out there who need to re-check their recovery gear..especially when going off road.

@@iffykidmn8170 This is actually a great comment...and the answer is 100% yes. Maybe not the full sawtooth bag....but you should have a recovery point, a tow strap, and a way to connect the tow strap to two points of contact...either for yourself in emergency situations..or for if/when you come upon someone else who needs help.

@@iffykidmn8170, where I live is in a small rural town surrounded by farms. We have extreme weather on both ends and so far this December on has been bad. Since December I have helped recover around 20 to 25 people using my Warn winch, USActionTrax traction boards and Factor 55 recovery gear. Now when I lived in San Diego, outside of off roading, there were very few times. Mainly if someone ran off the road and needed help but even if I still lived out there I would keep and carry the gear that I have. You never know when or how you may need it and if you use it once it truly will pay for itself. A friend a number of years saved 2 lives with his. A lady accidentally drove into the San Diego bay with her kid in the car. Her floor mat got stuck on the gas pedal and they went into the bay at the boat ramp. My buddy tied his winch line around her back tire and pulled the car out. When the car hit the water the lady froze and didn’t know what to do. So yes, in my opinion, the gear is good to have even if you’re not out off roading.

I have several Factor 55 pieces. I just bought the RRP, I have the Hitch Link, Flat Link, and their tow strap. I bought Crosby bow shackles because I didn't want $10 shackles for such an important role. I bought Bubba Rope soft shackles and kinetic rope. Great content!

when i replace my wire rope, i keep so much of it in a couple shorter cables.(properly made at the ends), plus a 4 ton come-a-long. i must have at least 8 D-rings.

Great guest to have on to give us some insight on their gear and gear in general. I concur that quality gear in everything you use in overlanding is so important, especially if you go out solo a lot like we do. I need to look into that pulley and have yet to pick up some soft shackles. Reputable manufacturers are worth the money.

I so agree...we need to hear this stuff!!! The snatch block/pulley system is genius. It's my favorite piece of gear from them (besides the flat link). There are a few things I saved money on in my current build..and 1/2 of them I'd do again, while 1/2 of them were a mistake lol.

Jason -YOU SCARE ME! - Yeah, I'm 78 living half a year each year in that country that a lot of straps and ropes are made in - the "C" country. But it is probably the best off-roading country in the world. But - For a 78-YEAR-OLD you look scary - ink, beard, hat on backward, crazy sunglasses and if I saw you in an ally at night I would run away. But - If I was ever stuck somewhere and needed recovery - you would be the guy at the head of my list to see coming for me. You are so knowledgeable, an excellent teacher, great pace, and just the right amount of detail. In short - you're awesome. Yeah, I'll definitely be spending some of my Social Security money on some upgraded Factor 55 gear before I come back to the US to resume my adventures in the Gladiator Mojave and Off-Grid trailer. PS: Check to see where those sunglasses with the checkerboard design were made.

Yes! Winch controller always handy! I have my wireless controller in the center console and the wired one in the glovebox. Always easy to get to which has saved my ass before when time was of the essence and needed to get people unstuck as fast and safely as possible.

I agree that you have to buy quality stuff with the appropriate WLL. I personally am not a big fan of soft shackles with the exception of joining straps and possibly for change of direction. I use Crosby shackles to connect my winches to pulleys and attachments points.

I don't like how some people yank at full speed, then when they get moving ..the pulling vehicle just goes balls out spinning all wheels. That yanking could kill or maim someone, yanking will do vehicle damage, spinning wheels throws rocks all over the towed vehicle causing paint damage, windshield damage. Kinetic ropes can be yanked, and traction is not spinning the wheels.

I don't off road or overland but have recovery gear in my vans. Some of the roads I travel are hilly dirt roads, sometimes half a road is washed out. I have a 12k winch, straps boards, tree straps, D-rings. Have had to use all of these over the years.

An in-cab Winch Rocker Switch is a great backup solution for not having your winch controller handy. It is a great, cheap afternoon project; some terminals, a switch and some 3-5 core cable (depending on your winch) and you will never need to worry about loosing your winch wireless remote in the bog hole or under the back seat again. The key for the winch immobiliser however; you had better keep a few spares...

Lots of love for the channel and for the educational aspects of this video, but so much content on a lot of off-roading channels has lately just been KZbin famous faces telling us to buy the most expensive gear. Factor 55, while the manufacturing may be great and the team over there is great, might be getting a little overboard thinking a couple shackles and a rope are worth $1000. Great Comment…seriously. I totally get that, and honestly agree. I don’t think you should buy Factor55 stuff if it’s outside your budget. BUT I think EVERYONE should check their recovery gear for some of the things Justin pointed out. It doesn’t have to F55…but at least understand your recovery thresholds and rope material. That’s critical in my opinion.

Factor 55 makes the best USA recovery gear. Warn industries acquired them back in 2020. Their mission is still the same, to provide the best recovery grear. Their cost is more, but you really are in the long term getting better engineered & safer products.

My Jeep Tj and coming from atving I always had a front and rear winch on my 4wheeler so I now have a trailer hitch winch on the jeep I do a lot of solo vehicle off roading here in Canada

The most important recovery gear is knowing your rig and skill of the driver. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In my case I travel solo. I deal with mud and snow. "good straight shank shovel, traction boards come along, tow strap, shackles. When I help others I do carry a Kinetic rope and more tow straps.

Factor 55 is top notch. In fact I just placed an order with them this AM due to your video. Bummer that they are now owned by Warn ... (I'm not a fan of growth by acquisition) ... but at least Warn doesn't seem to be dismantling and absorbing into the mother-ship.

That's so great to hear! To my knowledge Warn has let the company maintain a lot of its autonomy. At least Warn is another PNW company known for quality manufacturing. It will be interesting to see what happens at F55 over the next 5 years, hopefully more of the same. They single handedly changed the vehicle recovery industry with the invention of the flat link system...hope that innovation continues!

Th e one thing you should have mentioned or I missed, is a way for the bag to attach to the winch line mostly for steel cable, so if it breaks it is weighed down. Safety.

@@Venture2Roam I agree in the K-rope are not good for every occasion, but in a pinch and only one rope available would it be better to use a K-rope to tow or a tow rope to do a recovery?🤪🤔

It’s not cheap, that’s for sure. If it’s not in your budget..at least check your current gear for some of the ratings we talked about. Doesn’t have to be F55..but make sure your gear can actually tow your rig!

Last question, is the kinetic rope just a bonus piece of equipment? I saw something like that was not included in the sawtooth kit. Is the kinetic just another way to get out of the mud? I have a winch.

Kinetic is an excellent piece of gear for recovering other vehicles...or having another vehicle recover yourself. A winch can get you out of most situations though (assuming it's being used correctly).

I'd love Justin to look at my gear. Other than weight, I don't think he'd have much to grouse about. I've ALWAYS been all about self recovery. And am rather well equipped for it. Just not with the cool modern gear. (And every single piece is lift rated. Including the hoisting device.)

I'll bite. The example in this video, the blue mystery strap is just that, a mystery. It's doesn't tell you any of the important information that you need to use it safely. It should include minimum breaking strength, the working load limit, the type of material and the standards to which it was tested. That blue rope probably wasn't tested and even if it was, how do you know the testing was done correctly do you really want to trust The National Supreme People's Testing and Standards Committee 🫣 The United States isn't the only country that can manufacturer high quality recovery gear but if it is made in the US then it's very likely that it is high quality and has been tested by trustworthy organizations.

2mm depth of hard anodizing is a little farfetched. If you look up that MIL-spec it is a maximum of 150 microns or .15 mm.
