I just realized that for the SECOND time, I forgot to mention eating out + activities etc LOLOL OKAY so I honestly barely do it (clearly... because I keep forgetting to talk about it), but my plan is to have a dollar limit for money I'm allowed to spend on eating out, going to cafes, museums, etc. I also have a few trips planned that will eventually have their own respective budgets as well! but don't worry bc I'll update y'all with all the details every month ;)

I also think its more healty to do stuff in moderation. I will also have my version of a no buy year, to be ABLE to spend when it really gives ME value... Its so importante to see!!! I have actually a good example of this... Like coffe on Starbucks, I see many say is an unessesary and expensive thing... This is actually now one of the things I will rarly buy during next year for for me THIS year that is for when I really, really want it... BUT a few years ago... I had traveled budget style before, sitting on the floor waiting for the airplane (lyxeriouse to fly I know! And Im SO grateful I could) but... The first time I could afford a Starbucks Coffee, at the airport, sitting in their nice sofa waiting for the plan, not sitting on the floor (which obviousely is good too!) was such a lyxeriouse moment for me and at that time that Starbucks coffee was SOOOOO worth it and valuable! For ME, in the economic situation I was then. Like starting to earn money on my own without money from parents etc. So EVERYTHING, almost, can be a good purchase for SOMEONE!! We want a happy as good life as we can right, thats a GOOD thing!!! We save and do non spendimg years right to be able to enjoy life MORE, not less right. We all have a short amount of time on this planet and I think everyone is worth having their best life (without destroying for others ofcourse). But for the ppl getting angry for you buying stuff... We do this saving/non buying thing TO be able to buy stuff or experienses we REALLY REALLY want and/or to kinda buy a sence of security and calm by having a bigger buffert. For everyone everything is valued differently, and even at different times in our life. Thats totally normal and good/fine!!
@tinas.85311 ай бұрын
My "no-buy/low buy" year is coming strictly from the perspective of not bringing more stuff into my space. Im not against replacing items or spending money on experiences, but Im trying to focus on using and enjoying the items I already have. I noticed that I really spent a lot of money on holiday decorations and seasonal items last year and was feeling a lot of fomo and pressure to keep up, so I'm trying to get off of that train. I'm making my decisions on what I'm okay with buying from that standpoint.
@deloresakins73311 ай бұрын
Your no buy year sounds very livable and not stressful. I am going to do a low buy as I’ve already preordered a few quilting kits coming later in 2024. By not impulse buying clothes, jewelry, sewing and cross stitch items, I will be able to save $$ easily for two of our grandkids who are graduating this year and the oldest who I like to give cash to as she is in her second year of college. Plus clearing debt. Hobbies are expensive and I have so much. And like you , books. I’ve also learned how to cut my hair and I’m going to stretch my glasses over another year so my hubby can buy a much needed new pair . Different generations but like minded in many ways. Go and experience as much as you can and make memories!!!

One thing I’m planning on doing and could be interesting to hear from you in your updates is keeping track of “temptation” item prices to look back on each month. Whether it’s a $7 pack of pens, $6 scone, or $80 sweater I say no to, it’ll be cool to show myself how much I saved when I stayed strong.

On using the library, my local library can order (by inter library loan) ANY book I want, I just have to wait for it. Patience! Plus, each time I check out a book, they slip in a note that says “Today you saved $xxx, YTD you have saved $Xxx, and during your lifetime library usage you have saved$XXX” The last running total was $26,773. We have the inter library loan available plus two different library apps (Libby and Hoopla) where we can listen to audiobooks or read ebooks for free. We rarely purchase any books now because almost everything is available between these options. I may occasionally purchase a classic if it’s really long since it takes me a while to read 1000-page classics.

I used RIT dye for a pair of yellow sweatpants, yellow sweatshirt and a pair of beige jeans. I used violet color and honestly it turned out better than I expected. Those items are one of my favorite things to wear now. I dyed each item separately, adjusting the amount of the dye for each of them. This way I got different shades of violet for every item, rather than having all three of them in the same exact shade. Just be careful not to wash dyed clothes with other clothes, as the color can bleed.

my yellow light items have a 150 dollar budget because in my opinion none of them are necessary but as someone who budgeted so hard for 3 years and blew basically all their savings and ended up in credit card debt, i cannot just spend a literal zero on wants. i want to build a capsule wardrobe, so i put down for clothes that i must shop second hand first and that i can only buy clothes once a month. as long as i dont surpass that 150 we're good. you can implement mini limits per item on your list even, so you dont go crazy if youre like me and were set up for failure in the mental health department. i have a painfully impulse driven brain and i just want people to know if you feel you cant just drop spending, youre not a failure, you can still do this challenge. all or nothing mindsets do more harm than good most of the time.

I honestly feel that people cannot break between no BUY and no SPEND they do have that all or nothing approach and these are the people that get upset when they can't stick to something because they haven't sat and thought about the logic. I think about a no BUY as 'things' you buy eg makeup, jewellery, skin care, the stuff that you don't need just want. You will always need to SPEND money especially on work related stuff like subscriptions especially for social media people, and medical things like glasses - it's for safety, not fashion, if you don't own a jacket at all and it's winter then that's a safety thing - but buy something to suit your needs not a top designer brand. I did a no buy in 2021 and I was very clear about many points like this. I see in so many groups people are upset that they had to pay the water bill or rent and are upset they spent money - you need to do that to live... People are always going to have opinions and I find the people that are the loudest are the ones who don't understand between buy and spend.

I live way way WAY out in the countryside. I buy food and necessities in bulk because I can't just pop over to a store easily. So my budget looks way different than many others to save on driving and gas. I found my temptation list is easier to handle with my wishlist being handy, just pop it on there and I no longer feel that temptation. I allow usage of my wishlist with holiday/birthday money. Books are my love and bane. I've been rereading my collection and adding a few to my necessities BECAUSE they are work write-offs (being an artist, we need frequent study and to be kept up-to-date with new programs).

So sad that people are criticizing you for trying to make a positive change in your life ,damn haters.You actually inspired me to a no buy January that will probably go on in 2024.You were the first one that said to take an inventory of what you have and I am shocked I have a lot of clothes, shoes and other accessories 😮 ,everyone else just go into the rules but actually counting all your items makes you realize how much you have and what you still need.I have bought a few items now as I'm going on a cruise shortly but that is basically enough for now.I will definitely include haircuts and nail appointments as I'm an academic and cannot look ratchet for my students😅Thank you for inspiring us new subbie here lots of love from South Africa!!!!

You've helped me focus, think about this seriously and I'm so grateful to you. People need to remember we're all different and so we'll approach this is a way that works for us. Honestly it makes me cross youve been given a hard time when you've done nothing but be honest and kind. ❤

I just want to make this more accessible to people!!! the purists make me so sad because that's what drives people away!! and most of the time, those people need this experience the most!!!

Unfortunately, more views raises the opportunity for those of a different variety to come spewing their BS. Your last video was the first one I saw, and it really opened my eyes to some things I can change regarding my spending habits. While I am not doing a whole year or standard no buy, I made a plan and am excited to see how it helps me create more discipline and financial stability. All because of you!!! I think your message to make it your own is incredibly important because that means you can create something you will ACTUALLY stick with. Just like any diet, exercise routine, new year resolution, or any other change a person makes, it is crucial that they are able to stay consistent, which can look different for everyone, just like success can. I hope you were able to celebrate your uptick in views even with the more unsavory side effects. ❤🎉 Have a great holiday, Grace! And ignore the holier than thou-ers. 😊

I only heard about a no buy year from your channel and after watching how you’re preparing for it I decided to try my own. It’s just a couple of weeks away now. Don’t listen to the negative comments, I have found people can have negative comments on just about anything. Most of them with no real insight into what you are trying to do. Keep up the great videos.

The idea of sharing a percentage instead of the amount of USD is great! 😊 For example, I am going to have a low buy year here 🙋🏼♀but I am based in Europe💁🏼♀Also, I totally feel the same vibe about occasional dresses ☺Only have 1 and my friends are even joking that by looking at me on our common photo, they will not be able to guess what event lit was later on 😅😂ou well😎 And, please, this is your no buy, so it should be comfortable for you, so don't let what other people tell you (that criticism) let you down🙅🏼♀. Sending support 😌

I agree, your no buy year is what you want it to be, i have my lists almost ready. Certainly will be keeping my hair appointments next year!
@gracenevitt11 ай бұрын
so true and I love that for you!! I personally decided to take my hair appts away because I really wanted to make my last hair appt this year and I wanted to honor that to myself and I realized that my "exception" on my previous list was really a bit of me being scared to commit to that. I realllly want to just have my natural hair (it's been a goal of mine for a while), so I need to just suck it up and let my highlights grow out and leave my hair alone LOL

We did a no buy month last summer I was amazed at people who had no idea and yet filled in dinner/lunch, free shirts, etc. It was a wild, blessed month.

I would love to see some lists on things to do to keep you busy or doing things that help you not spend. We sat down as a family and made a huge list but we are looking for more.

Yeah I think something all of us could think more about, and this ties into minimalism and decluttering/organizing as well, is to consider alternatives to ownership. For example I'm a bibliophile, but current me spends a lot of time cleaning and tending kids and realistically I'd benefit more from the experience of going to the library with the kids than buy one more thing that will be another responsibility to care for. A very random thing that has helped me walk past almost 100% of would-be impulse purchases is taking a pic of the item and telling myself I'll consider it and can come back for it. I'm trying to think if I ever have haha That's my main reason for wanting to do a no buy, is to get the inflow of stuff under control and to hit the reset button on shopping habits.

Thanks so much for making these videos. As soon as I saw the first one I was like YEESSSS. The fact you are personalising it makes it so much for attainable for example I have an 11 month old so it's inevitable I will need to purchase things but thinking second hand ect x

I'm at the start of the video and am triggered by the mad at a haircut (If not planning in general) See I get being smart and frugal (I'm all in!!) but I appreciate when people get haircuts or something done at the salon (doesn't have to be a cut or multiple visits a year) bc that's one of my parents career profession. Like I'd rather not worry that one of my parents might be without a job. 😟 Also I don't trust myself to cut my own hair well - power to you if you can but don't crap on others if they actually go to someone who's trained to do so. As for you dear I think your being very proactive and I thank you for it. Also I highly recommend if any people ask for gift ideas tell them books - cause then you can justify not buying them soo soo much more and you know you'd appreciate it.

I 100% agree with your take and I think it makes perfect sense when you think about what you are doing a no buy year for. For some people it may be because they're saving up for a big project like buying a house or paying off debts, but for others it's just a way to be conscious about what you're doing with your money and using it for what's truly meaningful. For instance I've decided to do a 3 months no-buy because a full year didn't feel realistic for me, but I have a single exception and it's concert tickets for Itzy's world tour as they are my favorite kpop group and it would just be stupid for me to miss the opportunity to go to that concert just because I'm doing a no-buy. But aside from that, there are still so many things I will no be buying such as clothes, junk food, stationery, etc etc to the point where my no-buy doesn't lose it's purpose. Sure this may qualify more as a "low" buy but I don't think it's the end of the world, and people getting mad for such things should really go touch grass ...

Exciting, I’m doing a no buy year too in 2024! My rules are similar. I have some more general exceptions of if my health or safety are at sake, I will allow to buy what I need and I can replace empties and stolen/lost items 😊

I think the most important for me is also using stuff up or get rid of it. I don’t need three lotions and never use lotion. If that makes sense

a slight critique: don’t cater to the haters. you seemed like you were issuing disclaimers every second! no need. okay, thx!! also: you said “we” a few times - do you have a partner? I’d love to know if they are participating or how you manage doing a no buy year with a live-in (or not) partner. love this series!!
@gracenevitt11 ай бұрын
yeah😭 this will be the last time I'll be addressing what the haters are saying!! apologies I talked about it so much in this video LOL and yes! I do have a partner :) I live with my boyfriend. he's on a pretty tight budget and we both have agreed to save money wherever we can. he likely won't be buying excessive amounts of anything in the new year. he has to make certain purchases for his career (musician) so he basically just makes those, pays for transportation, and buys food LOL

For eczema. I took my son to several allergists and dermatologists and one finally suggested the most simple, cheap, and effective treatment. One capful of bleach in the bath (not too hot) and soak for at least 20 minutes. Works amazingly. And of course moisturize after.

Last year, I made it 5 months without buying clothes. It was way more difficult than I thought it would be! My breaking purchase was a garment by a local artist. (I did have some fast-fashion purchases later, though 😢 but that's how I can afford pants.) I am so excited to try this challenge! I am a maximalist out of habit, not out of enjoyment.

Thanks for sharing your ideas, I think your attitude is well balanced. I am doing a no buy year for objects (replacing necessary items only) but not cutting out experiences. Personally though I wouldn't bother with the mess, hassle and chemicals involved in dying clothing, I'd either just keep it as is or donate it. Good luck with your challenge!
