I did woodwork in 1st form, and metalwork in 2nd and 3rd forms. I was upset when I had to drop these for the academic path (ah! such useful subjects as Latin!) I still remember my teachers treating sharpening as a mysterious topic, something to be carried out in private while acting as the right hand of Pharaoh. I appreciate that it was important to simplify such technicalities in order to give us an enthusiasm for the creative side, without having to worry about the mundame. But, since retirement, I no longer have a chap in a brown coat to do such things for me, so being shown how to do this for myself is very helpful.

Thanks for all you do here. New into the hobby. Got sucked doon the water stone (cheap Amazon) path, only 2, and a diamond plate. Touch up the edges on the 1000 grit diamond and hone on the 2000 waterstone. Gotta check the grits on the 2nd stone and hopefully it's no too far from 1000 to hone an edge, but being as they came from same place, I'm no holdin ma breath. Use the 400 diamond to flatten the water stone. Except the waterstone is showing more and more large grit lumps! Ok tiny lumps but way larger than the rest of the surface! And the more I flatten the more I uncover! GRRRRRR. So those may be moved into the kitchen for knives and an investment in oil stones for birthday from family. Bloody expensive this hobby so it is. ;) Take care & stay safe.

i picked up a nice cranked stanley 200 at a car boot sale which works well enough for what i do which is generally making a mess of things. Wedges look briliant though, a nice evolution to simplicity. If you ever fancy doing a vid on sharpening drill bits by hand (HSS metal bits) then that would be great, plus all the other bits that can be sharpend by hand rather thatn thrown away 😃

I've followed this channel for some time. I love the tips and the delivery. I understand you are time limited on ticktock, and tips are good. Do you intend to or have you videoed any of your projects you have made big and small that could appear here on KZbin.

Curious? How well does the blade hold on the wedges? I'm guessing the magnets are fairly strong. Also, are you running the wooden wedges on the oilstones or is it like with your original blade holders. Is there wear and tear on the oilstone/wood interface? I generally like the idea despite pros saying get used to doing it by hand???

You have to keep it very sharp to do it effectively by hand without a guide including shapering while your useing it I was told if you can't get it back to razor sharp in 10 seconds don't bother doing it by hand most people can't keep the blade in 1 position for longer than 10 seconds so ya start to round them and what not

Very true it doesn't matter how good someone thinks they since accumalative errors in angle will round the edge xx @@lissa020609

@@lissa020609 Too right. I tried by hand over and over to get something that looked awefully crooked. I tried harder to correct the blunder and made it even worse. Then admitted defeat and bought a cheap guide only to ruin my stone with the little wheel. making a groove. Oh! the pain of learning without guidance and good advice. I'm grateful to those who are willing to share their experiences.
