The funny thing is, the mechanical mechanism is there. If you pull the interior handle, it unlatches electronically (just like the outside handle), but if you pull it even further, it mechanically unlatches - just like any other car (which I appreciate for safety reasons!). A lot has been said about the S handles and their high failure rate. But I will say this: I absolutely love it, when the handles glide out as I approach the car. To me, that’s just an extra step of cool, that you don’t find on any other car, and that feeling still hasn’t gotten old 😄

Thanks for the educational video for yet another reason not to own a Tesla. Who has time for broken door handles that fail at the most inconvenient time. I've owned ICE cars for 50 years and never had a problem with a door handle breaking. Since the window regulator on the drivers' door was getting ready to fail, I suspect the same will happen on the passenger side as well. Just think how much you saved on gas though, right?
@cadreamdrives9 ай бұрын
Right - we wouldn’t want any of that new technology stuff! Probably better if we could go back to horse and buggy to be on the safe side 😄. The door handles on the S are definitely a weak point - or rather, they were. I think they pretty much have them under control now. There are other things that may be quirky. But isn’t that the case for all cars? And yes - think about all the money I save on gas. It does add up to quite a bit. And then add the money (and time) saved by not having to do oil changes, spark plug changes, brake jobs, annual service, and replacements of a million other parts, that fail on ICE cars. Not to mention the time I don’t spend at gas stations. The Tesla Model S has remarkably few quirks, given that it’s the first real car from a completely new manufacturer. It’s also incredibly reliable - much more so than any of all of the ICE cars I have owned. Add on top of that, that the driving experience is better in almost every way. I know new technology can be scary - and that many people love to criticize EVs. Many of them have never even tried one. I encourage you to try one out. You just might be surprised at what you find… 😊

It could be worse, much WORSE. In April of 2020 I bought a 2013 Model S85 from the original owner, the main drive unit and main display had already been replaced under warranty @90K miles. That meant that the car I bought was on it's second drive unit and display (@96K miles), so I felt like I was buying a practically new car. But in the summer of 2023 I began experiencing episodes of the drive unit cutting out during normal driving. Within a year the issue became worse, and by the Fall of 2024 it was happening almost every time I drove the car. So in mid-November 2024 I drove it to the local Austin, TX service center and on the drive there it cut out 3 times. When I got there they said I should leave it with them (without an appointment) because it was a "safety issue". The diagnosis (the same day) was that the drive unit was failing and had to be replaced. My choice: do nothing and have eventual total drive unit failure somewhere out on the road requiring a costly tow to the nearest service center OR make the replacement now. I authorized the replacement~ $6700 (out of warranty). The car has 140,000 miles now and is on it's 3rd drive unit. If I had known that this was a possible issue, I never would have bought the car back in 2020. This may not be typical for all early Model S's, but I was unlucky enough for it to happen to mine. Three (3) drive units in 140,000 miles of normal driving is not my idea of a dependable car.

I also bought it with 16,000 miles on it, and saved $8,400 off of sticker....because used manuals don't sell well. With 164,460 miles on it now, it may be my last car. Still runs perfectly.

How much longer do you have to drive that Focus for losing the bet?

@@AStanton1966 - This will likely be my last car. It still runs and drives like new. I've done the regular maintenance on it (I am previously an auto tech and I've worked on cars my whole life). It has been the most trouble free car I've had and it is fun to drive. Without the horrible DCT transmission there are none of those issues. Today's cars are not much more than over-tech packages that collect data that violates your privacy. Many cars have large screens in them that you HAVE TO LOOK AT in order to use heater controls, or to jump from one specific radio station to another. This requires you to take your eyes off the road so that you can be sure to touch the exact location of the images of buttons, instead of being able to FEEL actual buttons/knobs without looking. The notion that controls in a car are done that way, making you take your eyes off the road, is insane. Today's cars track HOW you drive, WHERE you go, HOW OFTEN you go there, how MANY people you take with you, and if they are adults or kids. This data is collected at any time by the manufacturer (you didn't believe Over-the-air Updates were for your convenience, did you?) and then sold to a data collection company. It is another source of income that the manufacturers make off of you. Then that company identifies your insurance company and sells your information to them, and THEY make money off fo you too. Then your insurance company looks at the data and see you slammed your brakes on several times, and you accelerate faster than they like. This makes you a "risky" client and they increase your insurance rate. There are already a number of videos here on KZbin of that happening. Please take 4 seconds to search for them if you don't believe me. The light that comes on when you have something kind of heavy in the front passenger seat that says "Passenger Airbag Off" is there to keep the airbag from harming children when they are in the front seat. However, that same sensor is on all the seats so that the car can collect info on how many people are riding with you, and if they are adults or kids. I am choosing to opt out of that by not owning one of these newer vehicles. Also, my car has been paid for for years. I bought it when it only had 16,000 miles in 2014. Original sticker price was $22,400. I only paid $14,000 for it. Because it has a manual transmission there wasn't as big a market for it, so it was cheaper. I believe I am the one who is laughing loudest.

I'm about to hit 100K miles. Oh, I also had them fix the sunroof, which wasn't working correctly. The only thing my car "needs" is the infotainment upgrade, but that can wait. I mainly drive my 2020 Model 3LR and my 2019 TMX100D.

I thought Elon said the best part is NO part. These cars are like Rube Goldberg designs.........overly complicated way to do simple things. He tries to reinvent the wheel when its not needed for the sake of futurism, a fantasy futurism at that.
@cadreamdrives8 ай бұрын
Sometimes things that are cool require a little extra. But in general, it’s hard to argue that Teslas are complicated. The drivetrain in an ICE car typically has 2k+ moving parts. A Tesla has around 20. Which car is complicated now? 😄 The future arrived 10 years ago. The Model Y is the most sold car in the world. It may be the stuff fantasies are made of, but it’s very much reality today 😊

Nah, in most cars issues like this are a pain in the arse, all the German makes... You think this is bad? Pshh, it's no worse than what's in a Prius. Jag, merc, BMW, VW... Way worse electrical and mechanical issues you deal with. It's a reason why those cars cost so much to work on. This issue actually wasn't that bad, similar issue in a Mercedes for instance may take a week to fix, and be way more complicated to get to the parts. Tesla really isn't bad, but charging 1500 for this fix is pretty crazy I must admit... should be around 7-800 max repair. They charge a lot to repair Teslas for no good reason.. these cars aren't Mercedes and BMW level of complicated unless we are talking about working on battery, all the other stuff isn't that complicated.

Does this FIY void all implied warranty on your Tesla?
@cadreamdrives9 ай бұрын
I’m way beyond the expiration of all of the warranties on my Tesla, so that wasn’t really a concern for me. This can get into a huge “right to repair” vs warranty discussion, but I would say this: If your bumper to bumper warranty is still active, I’d just have Tesla do the repair. If it’s not, I can’t see how fixing a door handle could possibly affect the battery / drive unit warranty.

This is the exact reason I turn off the folding mirror when the car is locked. Imagine how soon it will fail after opening and folding 4 to 5 times a day. Personally, the less tech the better, only when the feature is necessary. Tesla is basically a hibernate mode of a laptop so it is constantly using battery even if you don't drive the car - loosing about 1% a day by just parking. The old remote car key would be just fine because the car basically has to constantly figured if the phone or a key is nearby to unlock the car.

@cadreamdrives Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and commenting! I don’t remember the actual charge, but wasn’t much. I’ve also since learned that you may be able to do the calibration yourself as well. I think my total parts cost was less than $150, but please don’t use that as a price quote. The video was made quite a while back, and the pricing could be very different today. There are more and more EV shops popping up everywhere. I suggest checking in some of the big online Tesla forums (like teslaownersonline.com and similar), to see what shops might be available around you. In most cases, Teslas aren’t all that different from ICE cars to work on, so if you are a DIY person, I wouldn’t let that keep you from getting an old Tesla. I absolutely love mine, and have for years.

They actually thought of that. From the inside, it works like a normal door handle. You pull a lever, and the door opens. That being said, if you’re on your way to be submerged in your car, the way out is through the windows. It becomes impossible to open the doors almost immediately.
@egarciaz718 ай бұрын
The KISS "Keep IT Simple Stupid" method would have worked better. Why is there is servo just to extend the door handle out to for you to extend it further to open the door? High tech is nice but simple door mechanism design over 100 years ago seem to cost less and quite possible never fails.

@cadreamdrives9 ай бұрын
I think you may have to check your battery prices 😊. But here is the thing. It may cost me $15k if I ever need to replace the battery in the car. That’s a lot of money, for sure. But it’s a lot less than the cost when my Jaguar XKR and my BMW 650 had engine failures - both a much lower mileage. A Tesla Model S is not a cheap car and repair prices tend to follow the original cost of the car. But right now, old Teslas can be incredible bargains - even with the risk of battery failure. I’m also not sure you really want to be comparing service and parts costs - or general reliability - with McLarens. They are awesome cars, for sure, but they don’t exactly excel in reliability and affordability 😄
