Ditto. We absolutely love our 2014 P85+ ⚡️❤️ it’s been the most trouble-free car my wife & I have ever owned. We did the infotainment upgrade (highly recommended) and the front bumper refresh from T Sportline (also recommended), so now the car looks as new as it performs. Having unlimited supercharging is a bonus to owning an older Tesla and the performance motor makes it still feel quick as heck. Aside from tires, a front pair of brake pads, two wiper blades , a passenger door handle, and some windshield wiper fluid, this car has needed virtually no maintenance, other than the usual vacuum and a wash.

@@huiunit ask most tenured Tesla service technicians and they’ll tell you the P85 and it’s “+” variant are commonly referred to as “tire shredders”. That said, expect to go through a set of rear tires far more often than dual motor AWD models do, (especially on 21’s) and more so with aggressive driving.. and even more quickly if you have the “+” variant with the wider rear staggered set as they can’t be rotated. And as a result, this is the car’s biggest expense. I’m lucky if I get 6000 miles on a pair. Still worth it though if you ask me 😎 Thankfully, the fronts last at least twice as long as the rears. I’ve got a little over 148k miles on it as of this comment and plan on keeping it till the door falls off. Love this car.

Superchargers are often paired: One charger powers 2 plugs. If the paired plug is already connected, you'll get a lower charge rate until the other car's charge rate starts to taper off as it fills. For best performance, use a plug where its pair is not in use. Supercharger plugs are numbered usually 1A, 1B, etc, so you can see how they're paired. Some of the latest Superchargers are not paired, delivering full power to a single plug, but with an older Model S, you typically won't see higher than 150 kw of peak charging anyway. (We've owned a 2013 Model S P85 for 8 years and 90% of our driving is long distance.)

But then again, as you point out, the older cars can't really take advantage of the peak performance from some of the newer chargers, so I do have charge envy, when I watch newer cars charge :)
@ErikMeike Жыл бұрын
You were always below the 75kw you would get if this were the case. The lowest power you should ever get at a supercharger is 72kw unless if something is very wrong. I would guess that the plug was super hot causing the system to thermal throttle or else it would be too hot for you to touch to take out when you are done. One other note is that you supercharged to 100% there really is no reason to do that. Just charge enough to get to your destination since the last part to 100% takes forever as you noticed.

What a breath of fresh air to watch a calmly delivered, useful, real-world scenario of what an old EV can do and how it's a great thing to own and live with. Thank you so much. Buying an old S is something I've often wondered about as they appear to be absolute bargains, they are far more handsome than the other Teslas, and I see them as a modern classic. Also, unlike all other cars, all Teslas are continually updated with new features, plus some of the old ones come with free charging for life. What's not to like?! Some things I would have loved you to cover are the costs for servicing of an old Tesla, including what the car you used had experienced in its service history, some evidence from many old Model S's that have covered lots of miles, the potential for depreciation or indeed appreciation, and anything else we need to consider with an old S. The slow charger problem you experienced shows viewers, incorrectly I expect?, that charging is problematic. If, in yours and others experience, charging is normally quick and seamless then it would have been advantageous to have this clarity. The particular car you used here was one of the most attractive Teslas I've seen; what colour grey was that, and are those wheels a normal option - it looked fantastic?! Thanks again and I'd really love to see you make more videos about what it's like to live with an old S, or indeed any other secondhand EVs, and how that could be perfect for many people's use cases. Keep up the good work man!

Thank you so much for watching and for all of your feedback and suggestions! I'll look into making more videos about those. My car is Dolphin Gray and the wheels are aftermarket. Tesla only sells up 21 inch wheels, and mine are 22s. They came with the car, when I purchased it. I believe the previous owner put them on. I'm sorry if the video made it seem like charging issues are common. They are definitely not. Generally, it's a very smooth experience. I've owned the car for about 3 years and 30k miles now, and the only maintenance has been a new 12v battery (which I put in myself) and a door handle, that no longer presented itself. That was fixed for I think around $150 by putting an upgraded part in there. No oil changes, no brake changes (so far), no annual maintenance.

Sort of a non-event. I have a 7 year old Tesla with 129k miles. Routinely drive 360 mile round trips once a week. Have seen essentially no degradation between 70k miles and 129k miles on clock. As for charging speeds. As a 2013, you have a Gen 1 pack, known for slowest charging. Additionally, the charging station you selected appears to be a 'urban' charger, which has a max charge rate of 75kwh if I remember correctly. On a 2015 S90D, using the latest supercharger, I routinely see 110-115kwh up to about 45% soc, and then then normal taper down of the charging curve. I agree, the last '10 minutes' it takes longer time wise what the dash says to charge. However, I think a better test for your video would've been a Gen 3 Supercharger. As for pre-conditioning. On a cold day, I would say the car is doing that. Since you just completed a highway drive, at almost 100F, I doubt any preconditioning was used by the car. As the a/c cools the battery in hot weather, it was probably at the optimum temperature for charging when you got to the supercharger All in all a good video to show that EVs are not 'throw aways' and that batteries can still be useful 10 years after the purchase.

A better route planner you do the fastest trip possible, which is usually more stops but for shorter times (10 to 20 minutes usually vs 30-45 with tesla navigation naturally) makes road trips a blast. Wife and I have done san diego to humboldt, sd to tucson and many more shorter trips within that range, it does great. Be aware or crossing large mountains at lowish % but otherwise enjoy! Final tip, if you can arrive between 5%-10% state of charge you'll charge way faster when almost empty then at 20-50% etc. Higher the state of charge slower the charging will be.

8:53 I’ve only charged to 100% once in our P85+, just to see what the car’s estimated max range would show after 145k miles. 238 miles out of the original 265.. only 10% less than when factory fresh. The last 3% took a while. From 97 to 98%, it took 5:51 min, from 98-99, it took 8:34 min, and from 99-100, it took a whopping 21:38 min! I saw the 100% drop to 99% after just a little over a mile driving on the freeway, and then I was able to travel 4.1 miles from 99-98%, so it tracked as expected as far as Wh/mi goes. But aside from this, the mist I’ve ever charged it before then was 96%, and that was road tripping through the wilderness on our way up to Canada. We ended up arriving at the next station with ample charge, but we were giving ourselves the peace of mind as we were traveling through sparsely populated areas for that leg. Tesla has since added Superchargers in between those points, so charging that much for that journey again wouldn’t be necessary. In any case, the vast majority of our charges are done up to 60-80%, and we usually don’t recharge until in the 20’s or 30’s. Makes for shorter stops and more than enough to top off at home. Exceptions would be when road tripping across the desert 🏜️ we’ll charge up to 80-90% on some of those desolate legs just to have more than needed. Never know when you might encounter strong head winds, need to take a detour, unexpectedly take the scenic route, etc.

@@tiloalo the 3 & Y charge much faster than the S & X. On average, our charging stops last about 30-45 minutes. We often see 3’s & Y’s pull in after us and leave before us, usually only stopping for 15-25 minutes. I’ve rented 3’s and was quickly spoiled with how quickly it recharged at Superchargers.. also the 3 retained more energy, requiring fewer and shorter charge sessions due to its greater efficiency. In all, if free charging is important and you don’t mind the longer stops, a grandfathered older S is a great value. If however, you value shorter Supercharging stops, and plan on charging at home more often, then 3’s & Y’s offer a great experience.

@evolv.e4 ай бұрын
@@tiloalo comfortable, yes. Quiet, yes. I actually prefer the seats in the 3 compared to my S. It’s not that the seats in the S are bad, but I like the support and the way the 3 seats feel by comparison. Worth noting that the S seats have undergone several changes throughout the years, while the 3 seats have remained largely unchanged (as I think Tesla got those right from the start imo). The only version of seating I’ve not yet tried are the Plaid seats that just came out. The newest 3 is nice and even quieter than its predecessor. I also like the design updates. Personally, I think the new Performance 3 is a fantastic value all around. If had a new P3, I’d be equally happy I think. Tesla has even offered to transfer my unlimited free supercharging to any new 3, S, X, or Y a few months ago. It was incredibly temping to not take them up on the offer, but my wife prefers the S, so we decided to keep the S. We have 4 pure electric vehicles and she considers the S her car, so ultimately it’s up to her. Drive them back to back if you haven’t already and you should quickly be able to decide which one you prefer. I should mention that the newest S & X have undergone many improvements and one of them is faster charging, so the latest models are closer in Supercharging speed to the 3’s & Y’s, but still not quite as fast and of course, not as light or efficient, so the S & X still go through more energy over the same distance travelled, requiring them to be outfitted with larger batteries, adding weight. Thankfully, most of that weight quickly disappears given the vast amounts of torque, but on a twisty road, the 3 feels more nimble and flickable giving the driver even more confidence at higher speeds. Given the vehicles you mentioned, I think you might find that aspect to be more favorable with regards to driving dynamics and handling. The S is no slouch and by far the quickest full size sedan I’ve even driven, and the 3 is essentially a smaller version of course, and if sales numbers tell any tale, is incredibly popular with the buying public. Even non-performance models are still incredibly quick compared to most other gas cars, so if you don’t need the absolute quickest version, you should find that those still offer a lot of fun, while maintaining the comfort and quietness you asked about. Happy shopping!

@evolv.e thanks for the extensive answer, comforting to know that the model 3 also offers great comfort. Since it would be more recent and charge faster I guess it's the way to go. And probably the long-range dual motor, as it's not that far off the performance version.

@@erikkpritchard I think anytime you buy a 10 year old car, you’re rolling the dice to a certain extent. I don’t worry about battery failure on a daily basis, but it is certainly a concern to factor in. These days, there are non-Tesla options that are significantly cheaper (but still not cheap) in the event of battery failure. There a places that will attempt to repair your battery (or, in some cases, just “block” bad cells so you can charge again, but with less overall range), and there are places that will do a complete battery swap (with a warranty). The cost involved with a battery or drive unit failure are substantial, but the trade off is an amazing $100k car with next to no other maintenance costs and very few additional wear items. Thank you for your kind words! You are spot on with the value of these cars. I have to admit, I didn't really get it either, until I purchased mine. I charged from a regular 110v outlet for the first year or so, and while that was doable, installing the Level 2 charger was a game changer. My car has lots of blemishes and it's quirky in many ways. The first time the screens went black on me while driving was a little scary! But now I'm used to the quirks and I love the simplicity of the car. Everything is just simple - the driving experience, the (lack of) maintenance, the app, the tech - it all just works in a simple and serene way!

My car was in the shop and my loaner car was a 2017 model s and it was nice but I prefer my model 3 over the s. But if it was a newer Model s I probably would have liked it more. The supercharger network is fanatstic down here in Texas and I have 2 superchargers within 3 miles from me so I’m very fortunate. I plan on driving this car until I get a new one most likely a little later this year. But I have my fill trust in Tesla now. They really are fantastic vehicles

Teslas are magnificent vehicles in many ways (and crappy ones in other ways, but that's a different story...). The Supercharger network is such a huge asset. As long as you live and drive where SCs are available, range is a non-issue. Model 3s are a little "tighter" and Model S a little more "boaty". Really good video, thanks! One thing though, Tesla recommends you charge to a maximum of 90% usually for better battery health. It’s probably ok to charge higher very infrequently, like to 95% once on a trip. Also, charging for the newer 2021+ Model S vehicles and other Teslas is more than twice as fast and they launched their even faster V4 Superchargers. All good news, so by the time you get some refreshments, the car is ready. 2017+ Model 3s already have faster charging enabled. If you charge only at home using Level 2 240 V charging, then there can be zero wait by the time you are ready in the morning to go. All clean and better for the environment too, with zero emissions. Many people even charge for free at home with their own solar panels, or in some cases wind power! Free and clean energy!
@cadreamdrives Жыл бұрын
I completely agree! I have solar panels on order, and having the car "full" every morning is enough for me for everyday use. I only use the Super Chargers if I'm going on a road trip. Depending on my schedule, I may charge to 100% there once in a blue moon, but mostly, I do shorter, quicker stops to 70-80%. The charging times for the newer cars are amazing - and they keep getting faster. The Lucid can charge at incredible speed!
@h-j.k.8971 Жыл бұрын
I have run an old Mod.S 85 for the last three years and its fine. I no longer charge the battery up to 100% and then drive until its more or less empty like you would with a gas car, I just start my journey and stop at random chargers for 5 to 10 maybe 15 mins and then continue on. This takes the stress out of charging, gives me short breaks to stretch my legs and keeps the battery in its most effective range. One thing I would recommend is an upgrade to MUC2, the old MUC1 gets really lethargic after 10 years and spoils your experience with this otherwise fabulous car.
@cadreamdrives Жыл бұрын
I have been doing longer charging stops in the past, but I’m starting to switch to your philosophy as well. 10-15min stops seem much more efficient. My main display is finally de-laminating badly, so I may bite the bullet and do MCU-2. I haven’t been unhappy with MCU-1, but it definitely isn’t speedy 😄

1:39 I have one of the first model S. I like how you can see the delamination of the LCD here that is SO common in these older cars. The display still works, but it looks ugly. Mine has grown to the entire bottom half of my display. The biggest issue with this is that the advesive leaks out into your console and if you aren't careful you will have very sticky fingers if you touch the wrong part of your car. So far, my model S is still running great though. Being the performance model it eats tires like cookie on crack would eat cookies, but that's a bit on me. Cheers to Tesla for making a great car! I still love it even with it's blemishes!

I do know that it has been more than a year, and so far, I've been lucky that it hasn't grown much. If it ever gets huge - or starts oozing out, I'll be looking into either doing the DIY fix, or buying a new screen. You're certainly right about the tire wear! Since mine is lowered too, it just tears through them. I've seen you can purchase aftermarket control arms that will fix the issue, so I may be getting some of those in the future. The experience only got me 190-200 miles until a full charge is needed. @@cadreamdrives absolutely a good point. I have the ability to charge at my home, and my workplace (free). It’d certainly meet our needs 90% of the time. I’m sure that will improve in short order, as well. I agree, electric cars are a total drag for road trips. Even if you should take breaks on a roadtrip, you're at the mercy of your car to decide when you take a break. and an hour is way too long for most roadtrip stops. i recently took a trip from CA to TX and back, two days each way in a gas car. In an electric car that's at least 4 days each way, possibly 5. way too much time wasted to charge a stupid car.
@SmorfSmorf Жыл бұрын
@@Jortdf534 yeah I think the newer models will do fine with fast charging and so on but used teslas dont stand a chance.
@cadreamdrives Жыл бұрын
You have to factor in that the amount of time spent charging has an element of personal preference. For road trips, many people choose much shorter stops. The cars charge MUCH faster in the beginning of the charge cycle - meaning you can put a LOT of miles in the car in 10-20 minutes (and even more on the newer Teslas, what accept higher charging currents than mine does). I like to go and grab a cup of coffee and squeeze in as much as I can when I'm stopped, but that's also partially because Super Charging is free for me - and charging at home isn't. So I may as well get as much free range as I can. The other reality is that I rarely ever visit chargers away from my house. My car is "full" EVERY morning, which means I can easily go 150 miles or more. It's VERY rare that I go further than that. So if you add up the time, I would likely spend more time at gas stations overall than than I do at charging stations with my Tesla.

@cadreamdrives Жыл бұрын
For most Teslas made before 2017, charging at Tesla’s superchargers is free. (Yes, really, truly free!). The cost of Charging at home depends on the cost of electricity where you live. If you can find your cost per kWh, a simple way to estimate is calculating 70% of your battery size and multiplying that with your rate. In my case, my battery is 85kWh and my rate is $0.21 per kWh. So it costs me roughly 0.7x85x0.21=$12.50 to fill my car from 10% to 80%. Note that this is a rough estimate, but it gives you a pretty good idea.

I’m so sorry to hear that. That’s the fear for most owners of older Teslas, and it sucks when it happens. But there are other options than a full (and expensive) Tesla replacement. Some people have been able to get remanufactured batteries from Tesla for less, and there are now quite a few 3rd party options. Some companies offer full battery swaps for significantly less than Tesla, and others can now perform repairs on the old batteries. Check out EV-Recell, 057tech (suggested by a viewer in another comment), and Gruber Motors. They all offer solutions at much less $$$. There are quite a few other companies out there in addition to these.

@@cadreamdrives I’m wondering if the Tesla battery pack is similar to Ford where the battery pack is serviceable and consists of several modules that can be replaced separately if they fail. Or does the entire Tesla battery have to be replaced all at once?
@cadreamdrives Жыл бұрын
@@dmandman9 It depends on who you ask. Tesla will not repair a battery or replace any of the cells in it, but that is exactly what some of the 3rd party places do. A Tesla battery is made up of a large amount of individual cells, and they are indeed replaceable. Tesla has just chosen not to offer / support this service.
@dmandman9 Жыл бұрын
@@cadreamdrives With ford you don’t replace the individual cells. But the battery pack is made of several modules. You could compare it to a 36volt golf cart which contains 6 6 volt batteries. I’m not sure how many modules the Lightning uses, but I believe the Mach e uses either 6 or 8 depending on whether it’s extended range or not. We can view the battery condition using our scan tool. And see the condition of each module. If a module has degraded excessively because of too many bad cells, only that module needs to be replaced . And if another module is marginal, they can choose to replace it at that time as well. That potentially saves thousands of dollars. Ford only recommends replacing the entire pack if 4 or more of the 6 modules are bad. Hopefully, Tesla and the other companies will do the same eventually. Since batteries generally last several hundred thousand miles, it’s likely that if a battery has failed just outside of warranty and can charge to 40-50% then it’s probably just one individual module that’s failed and pulling the entire pack down. In a ford, replacing it would restore the vast majority of the battery capacity
@cadreamdrives Жыл бұрын
I like the modular idea. Tesla made a choice early to not service their batteries like that, but that doesn't mean old batteries just get discarded after they fail. Tesla will take your old battery and refurbish it - and offer that to their customers as a replacement battery.
