In 2020 I decided to photograph everything in Black & White. It was a challenge I gave myself to learn more about Black & White Photography and discover what it means to me and my photography going forward. In this video I want to share my experience and the lessons I learned.

Color vs.black & white. I choose B&W ~ 75% of the time. I’m near 70 and that is what I grew up with. Color was always more expensive. I mostly use Fuji cameras and use a B&W jpeg film simulation with RGY filter simulations. I have a button that will change the film simulation to color for a quick change. The advantage of using the film simulations is since the camera is mirrorless, I see the image in the EVF or LCD the way the film simulation is set up. Very handy to see in B&W before I press the shutter. Can’t understand why in the 60’s onward professionals most used B&W. It wasn’t considered artistic if the image was in color. People like Saul Leiter were using color film but by and large didn’t share their work.How silly. It is all about how you see the world. You showed how the traffic cones change in nature based whether you use color or not. Sometimes the subject IS the color. When I shoot in B&W I like,to underexposed the image by about half a stop. I like strong contrast and crushing the blacks. When B&W is normally or over exposed the blacks turn into grays. I don’t like that look. The Ricoh GRs have a film sim that gives me the crushed blacks I like. Of course now we use digital cameras. We have a 2nd choice as to whether use B&W or color. Shoot both! Use a B&W jpeg simulation and also shoot raw. The raw file can be your color negative. This way you have the best of both worlds. The thing is to take and make images. We aren’t using film. We aren’t limited by the film we have in the camera. We aren’t limited to 20 or 36 images in a roll of film. We don’t have to wait or pay for the film to be developed to see what our images look like. I like and appreciate your year of shooting in black and white. The value of shooting this way was clearly expressed in your video with Sean Tucker. Please hyperlink to that video as you did mention it in this video. Ricoh. Fuji. Leica. You are a man of several flavors. Mask on Nurse Marty

This is wonderful Sam, and thought provoking. I can’t remember where I first heard it, but somewhere I picked up the notion that you should get comfortable with black and white so that when you use colour you do so with intention because it has something to add; it has purpose. I lack the skills to help with your book, but I’m buying a copy for sure.

Excellent to finally get your perspective on the matter! I definitely like black and white to "freeze" people and their expressions/interactions (loved the shots of your grandfathers!) while colour can be more descriptive in terms of mood (of course it can be critical like your example with flags).

Great video! I always love black and white and the feeling of it. We are lucky today to have choice between color and B&W. What I love is that you can tell two different stories/emotions, just by changing between color and B&W. Like a sort of alternate reality of the same image. I sometimes think I miss something if I don't have the color and the B&W of the same picture...

Nice video Samuel. I'm always going back and forth with black and white. I prefer bnw because I don't think I'm very good with color and I can pick out light and contrast. But then I go through the color phase, then bnw phase. I'm sure you know the deal and I guess that's why I only shoot raw. I considered a monochrome camera, too and I"m glad I didn't go that route. You have some banger photos btw...love the photos in the Alps and Bulgaria. Cheers, Chris
@SamuelStreetlife
@SamuelStreetlife 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for your comment Christos! I think its totally fine to have a little B&W phase or color phase from time to time. With digital cameras we have the convenience to think about color or B&W after taking an image. However it is also making us less intentional sometimes and that is where a little challenge like this can help us understand our own photography better. I for one had a lot of fun limiting myself but I am also glad it is over haha. Thanks again and all the best from germany, Samuel.

You reached out towards the end that you hadn’t settled on the sequencing in your book. I’m sure you probably know this however maybe add small versions of them to a MS Word document, maybe 6 to a page then print, cut and blu-tac to a wall and play with the sequencing over a few days. Your wife might even suggest something (if they’re on a wall, she won’t be able to avoid them lol)

Good stuff, Samuel. I truly enjoyed your documenting of the journey. In the end, despite having dedicated monochrom tools, I think there's a lot to be said for keeping colour in our portfolio. Because colour allows us to capture mood and temperature - something black and white can't articulate as well.

Great video Samuel. For me as an 'old' hobby photographer born the same year as Aleksey Myakishev it is immediately clear what Chris explains: with BW you have to compose in contrasts, not in colour. It is a different way of view. You can see Chris is from a digital era and has a hard time discovering and describing it, as we are overflooded with colour nowadays and can even pimp the images with software to be more colourful than usual.

Hélène Binet gave an explanation that physically, the eyes receive b&w with different sensors than colour, the eye rods that read b&w are responsible for analysis of form and that happens a faster than the reading colour. She wasn't so convinced entirely but wondered about it. She shoots predominately b&w but also some colour

Back in the day I would chase as fine a grain as possible for my negs. Not necessarily Pan F/Hyfin but for me any grain was detrimental to the image. Digital took a while to break through that barrier but I'm happy now. My first digital was a Sony Floppy disc camera. De noising programs were popular. Rarely a need for them now.

will you make a video about how to make color photos? I wont ever say my photos are good, but I do feel comfortable shooting black and white and struggle for the past few months trying to shoot color and what I get i end up falling back to editing the images in black and white. should I just bite the bullet that if the photo doesnt look good in color then dont try to "save" it by changing it in to black and white? never posting those images? I really love this discussion made by many channels in this topic and interesting they all been posted in a month's time span.

A nice collection and some thoughtful reflection. Personally, I think there’s a good argument to be made for both bnw and color, but if people need to use bnw to make a mundane photo seem more interesting, doesn’t that kind of mean the photo isn’t really that interesting to begin with? Personally, I prefer color almost every time.

It took time but it was worth the waiting, perhaps my favourite video from your channel. I believe that if I will ever buy another camera, it will be a Monochrome. It all comes down to your gut instinct, and I believe that the most meaningful pictures look better in B&W. I always shoot in B&W view and it makes me look at the scenes in the way I prefer, I feel that I`m not missing a thing and it`s more true to the mood of the scene. Quoting Elliot Erwitt, "Color is descriptive. Black and white is interpretive." I agree, what do you prefer?...

Dear Samuel. Thanks for the video. I am trying practice and employ the tips you give on the channel. I have a question regarding zone focussing. I am using the A6400 with the Sigma 30 f2.8. Is there a place where I can post some questions? I would really appreciate your input. And great pics!! Thoroughly enjoyed the video.

Awww this was amazing!!! Love this video and recently I have shot more b&w as I want to get better at it. Color is stronger but black and white is more precious I feel. Thank you for making this!

I actually started 2020 shooting only black and white my self, but I suffered so much I had to stop in may. It was really eating up my creativity and weighing me down. I like limits, but only shooting BW was too limiting and I started not to go out because I knew I had to shoot in black and white. One lens and one camera is a limit I can live with, but somehow the limit of not shooting colour was too much for me.

A tip to shoot special moments in black and white and everyday situations in color is something I thought about but didn't come to that conclusion. Valuable advice, thanks! My other dilemma is: photography or videography. I document the life of my family, children aged 2 and 4, so I have a lot of situations that are both special (for them) and ordinary (for me). Do you have any thoughts on this? In addition, sometimes it is so difficult to decide if you want to relive or document a moment. By the way, I can't wait for your book to be ready!

l started taking pictures in the early 60s with a Petrie S7 range finder camera, l did color but B&W was my favorite you can get a certain feeling with color, my next camera Olympus OM1 w/50mm 1.4, and an Olympus 75 - 150mm zoom lens still have the camera and lens, l did a lot of B&W with it in the 70s, l would go into old neighborhoods in Brooklyn and NY lower east side and snap away. Now I'm using FujiFilm X-T10 and having fun it's almost a spitting image of my OM1 silver body, I'm using the OM1 lens, l wish X-T10 had real spilt image focus l don't use any of the manual focus that is provided in the camera, l just focus buy what l see if that makes sense to you something you learn how to do with old cameras.

So glad you spent an entire year with this b/w experiment. I, too, fluctuate between color & b/w. Often just depends on my mood at the time. I’m working on a “feet/shoes” project now, & shooting only square & b/w. Not sure how it’ll turn out, but it’s an interesting project, nonetheless. I really appreciate your video on the subject.

Color or Black & White: At times, an image is distracting in Color. Black & White, you Must use your Imagination when looking at the image! Both are Art, Both have a time and place when to be used. Shoot both....

Grusse aus Kanada mit ein neue subscriber. This is one of the best photography video's I've seen in awhile. I really enjoyed your story and journey with B&W. I'm a fan of both B&W and colour. My trick in shooting digital is no "play back", I set my camera to B&W or colour before I leave the house, and I only use LR mobile to keep my photos simple and true. No fake news for me please. Thanks.

I just watched this video AFTER watching your video where you're selling your Q2. I started shooting with black and white film and went with color (mostly) once digital came about. I always loved b&w and am about to drop big bucks on the Q2 monochrome. Even though you thought the Q2 didn't work for you I'm even more convinced that purchasing the monochrome is a good move for my final camera stable. I'm keeping what you said in mind but I think I can overlook the 7 things you hated about the Q2. Thanks for this.

👍Great idea for do a year b/W plan! If you shoot in digital, would you shoot directly in b/w? Or edit them in b/W on computer? Many thxxxx👍
