New here, this is the first vid I’ve watched and it’s right up my alley! As a longtime hiker, I’m used to packing very light, so it’s great to see what you carry. Just wanted to share that you can wear your rain jacket on top of your base layers and fleece, and may not even need a heavier jacket! A rain jacket is a perfect top layer because it acts as a windbreak along with trapping a bit of heat, and multiple thin layers trap air better than one heavier layer. Even if you’re able to find a puffy jacket or similar, it’s great that you have that rain jacket as a topper if you need it. Nice to find another minimalist! Off to check out your other stuff… 😁

Rain jackets are used by ultra light hikers and packers who have masterd layers clothing as a cold weather shell to keep out water AND wind. So when you layer properly you can go from higher to lower temps with the same clothing. Under layers can double as sleep ware. Outer layers can stand alone in the shoulder seasons. A puffy can double as a pillow. So much you csn do with picking multipurpose items in good materials.

I would recommend trying a menstrual cup if you haven't yet. It might make travel easier for you since you can go much longer than with a tampon (great for longer travel days) and then you just rinse it out and reuse it. I had to try a few until I found one that was not intimidating or awkward for me to use but now I love it.

I honestly recomend birth control for instances like these, although it does come with side effects. And for those with disabilities and conditions that make them not want to pass it to their children, you can also get sterilised. Both options can seem harsh or risky but are important to consider especially if your periods are painful.

Taiwan is all about keeping dry. I’ve lived there off and on through the years and have family there. You can get away with layers with a good rain jacket if you tend to run warm. It’s a wet cold. Gets into your bones, not at all like the dry cold of Denver. I hope you love Taiwan as much as I do. It’s a great country. The people there are so incredibly friendly and helpful. More people speak english there than you might think. Especially in Taipei. Japan in February is really really cold. At least in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. You’ll want a heavier coat for Japan. This is coming from someone who runs hot. Have a great time! Thank you for your tips. Very helpful!

Thats really good to know, I'm glad we both kept our rain jackets then! Yeah, wet cold is the brutal kind of cold and it will be our first real cold weather test since starting this trip. We hope so too! It's been on our list for a LONG time and we are so excited that we finally get to visit. Haha yeah Japan will be freezing we have no doubt. Taiwan will be a good testing ground to see what gaps we have in our clothes! I suspect our breathable running shoes might be an issue.

Serious props for how light you're traveling! I've been abroad for 6 months and actually just bought a bigger day pack because I couldn't do the ultra light anymore. Also, I saw someone comment about not being able to find heavy jackets in Australia and just wanted to say I saw some at Kathmandu literally two days ago. Not sure when you're getting over here, but that might be a good place to check.

I live in Australia. Kathmandu and Macpac will have big jackets all year round. You’ll be lucky to find a big jacket anywhere else here in the middle of summer! Maybe an op shop.

I have the same issues with my darn tough no show socks. A really good trick that I found was to put to the socks on your shoe inserts instead on your feet. I was able to keep using these light weight merino wool socks without making new purchases.

I hope you like Taiwan! It's one of my favourite places to travel to because Taiwanese are so friendly and helpful. In Asia, if you are looking for clothing that fit a Caucasian frame, you can try out brands that are common in western countries. I believe that Taiwan has brands like Northface. If you try Asian brands, they usually have Asian (ie petite) cuts, and probably doesn't work for your shoulders and torso. I loved your last packing video, and enjoy this one too! If you have anything booked for the end of your Australia trip, even though they are in summer it is worth checking Kathmandu on their website and having it shipped. You are more likely to find the size you need than the few left over winter jackets in shop.

Really impressive! I don’t know if I’ll ever get to where you are in simplifying what I bring. My 2 cents for buying a puffer would be to opt for synthetic insulation over down. It retains heat when wet and is much easier to wash. If you can get a jacket with primaloft insulation it is pretty close to the warmth/weight ratio of down. I have the north face thermoball and Patagonia nano puff. Thermoball is a bit warmer and a tad sturdier but the nano puff packs really well and is really light. I’d say you can wear those in mid to low 40s Fahrenheit pretty comfortably with just a shirt under. I have one insulated layer with a hood and one without for layering. The hood on the thermoball is nice and warm but it’s a pain when you have a rain shell and like 2-3 hoods going on. Safe travels to you both!

The rain jacket is from Quechua. It is a brand from Decathlon, a french store, very well known in all Europe that is specialized in outdoor activities and sports. 😉

Decathlon has very low prices, too. Their website says they have stores in Taipei and other cities in Taiwan, so you may be able to find good winter gear there.

I like your no nonsense common sense way of packing. I agree that if you put things in the same place each time you’ll usually know exactly where to find them. You might look around Vietnam (if you haven’t left yet) for a stuffable down jacket (micro puff style) as many of the top brands like Patagonia, NorthFace etc are made in Vietnam and there are bound to be some from the same factories for sale. I’m able to put my Patagonia Micropuff jacket in a small packing cube and have it with me everywhere I go. You could use your rain jacket as a shell over it in case of rain or snow so you retain the insulation without getting soaked. Safe travels.

Wow this is awesome! I love hiking and this is even more effective for travel. My two suggestions are these: for the time of the month looking into a reusable cup that you can sanitize and second is a small sewing kit to repair your favorite clothes and in any cases of emergency. For a coat I might suggest a packable coat that the rain coat over can provide warmth and can use separately. Happy travels

Thank you! We actually had a small sewing kit from the hotel amenities kit on a previous trip but after 3 months we never used it so we opted to leave it at home. You might have inspired me to pick the next one we see up though :) I actually looked into a reusable cup but found it wasn't for me unfortunately. I travel as a minimalist but I’m facing a challenge on my next trip: I’m travelling around Italy for ten days then going on a week long Mediterranean cruise. My plan is to pack only a backpack (which is the similar to yours) I’m going to be walking, in transit, in museums, the beach, and dress up nights on the cruise. If it doesn’t work out I figure I can buy something when there. I hope. 😅

Have you tried a menstrual cup or a menstrual disc? I find the disc cooler than the cup. You only need that one thing that barely takes up space and it is more environmentally friendly. I find it also more hygienic since you can leave it in for up to 12 h and tampons you are supposed to remove after 4 (right? I don't even remember, so you just do it twice a day (unless you bleed a lot) in your hotel/hostel/AirBnB. Also something that I love is a metal ear cleaner. Have had mine since 2014 and don't wanna use anything else. Altho I don't think you mentioned Q-tips or anything, I thought I'd mention it :) Very, very impressive!! I love that you only take that one bag for 6 months. When I see videos of people saying that they travel light and take the same amount of stuff when going on a week trip I just have to laugh xD Thanks for sharing.

Just found you guys. Excellent video i am from Australia and plenty of sizing You could always check ebay or op shops for a jacket. I have bough most of mine from there because people mainly use them for one trip and sell so i have saved so much I mainly buy silk items as they keep you warm and cool Just a 15:24 thought Lastly i have bought the human gear Stax small for skin care and tablets. So light and convenient also i use a small scrubba weighs 108gms can use as dry bag too and (but its the washboard built in that sets this apart from the rest a light sea to summit line( weighs 28gms both for washing and drying overnight and so check them out too. I tried to attach a photo Anyway happy new year 🎉

Thank you for watching! Yes buying used is actually an awesome tip! We got our first winter jackets when we were in Colorado on Ebay for dirt cheap. I actually use Subtl Beauty's makeup stacks which come in their own awesome little containers. I do love human gear's other containers though and will check out the Stax for other items! Jeff actually carries the sea to summit line in his laundry kit and that thing is worth its weight in gold! We looked into the scrubba but opted to not go for it just because we figured we could get away with the STS dry sacks which are lighter. The downside is, as you pointed out, there are no agitators in the dry sack. That was more of an issue in Europe though as in Asia laundry is everywhere for around $1-2 USD per kg of laundry. I'm 5'8" and a US size 14/16 and shopping for clothes in Asia is a nightmare 😱 In 2017, on a 4 month overseas trip, I last minute decided to do the Annapurna Basecamp trek in Nepal and had no gear with me....finding hiking boots in a US women's 9.5 was the worst! I have not! I do try to keep certain things marked with the proper paperwork on hand (i.e. any legit meds) but allergy pills, Tylenol, vitamins, etc I havent had any issues as of yet!

Hey Jennifer! Sorry for the confusion. The uniqlo shirt/pants are both from their heattech line which are baselayers meant for cold weather, basically long underwear. We only picked these up recently since we are starting to move into cold weather.

Thanks Bob! We actually own a lot of merino gear. It was so hot in Italy (weeks of 100 fahrenheit) that really we just opting for clothes we could pour sweat into and not worry about destroying. Merino is the "holy grail" of backpacking and for good reason but I think it also comes down to the preference of the person.
