Thank you so much for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed! It was a lot easier to get up and running than I had imagined. The best thing I've ever done for both my peace of mind and for the health of the plants is pushing to be as automated as possible. The less you have to tinker and play with settings, the more time you will have to enjoy your plants and be able to address the more pressing issues that come up when growing. I took about a year and slowly bought things bit by bit until I could get it up and running. I am planning on doing another larger build sometime this next year and when I do, I plan on filming the entire process start to finish. Hoping I can make it educational enough to be able to really help and inspire others! Stay safe and happy growing! :)

Hi Cloudforest: First, your setup, knowledge and plants are amazing. Second: Thank you for putting this together and for showing the things you use to make it successful. I have an exo that I have been running a year. I was almost at the point of giving up but like the "mini greenhouse" so much -- and ran into your video -- that I am going to tweak it and keep going. Ironically I just purchased a mister today to help me with automation. I am so far from being techy that when my power clicked off I didn't reprogram my Inkbird and have been doing everything manually, ugh -- not good for me or the plants. What I really struggle with is understanding fans and the moving parts, plugs, "birds" lol. Bless you for being knowledgeable and sharing. It is difficult when winging it. And also a big thanks for answering questions. That is so helpful for those of us, me, that may need a little assurance that we are going in the right direction. I saw the grow light on Amazon and am going to add that to my setup. I have some Jungle Dawns and will add the canagrow as well. Thanks for the pics of your components. Every little bit of info helps. So I am revvvvving up. Wish me luck.

Thank you so much for your kind words and input! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE feedback like this and it means more than you know to be able to help others with their setups and hear of their successes. Automation is key for me and I urge everyone to invest in any technology they’re comfortable with that will make their life easier when growing. Environment is key…. Plants react FAST when their conditions are favorable and you get much more out of them in each season! The grow light is great but beware of its power! I just released an update video for it where I discuss the topic in better detail, check it out while setting it up so you don’t make the same mistake I did! I think you’ll be happy with it but it is powerful! Best of luck with your setup! I am planning on expanding next year and I will be filming my next build from start to finish to try to help show everyone how to build one from “scratch”. Should be a fun project! @CloudforestVibesOrchidsMore4 жыл бұрын
LMFAO I think that may end up being a patreon thing... instead of football, would youtube videos work? The tank was a long term project that took me over a year to complete. I originally bought it to make a dart frog enclosure and somehow ended up on the orchid path in my journey and research for creating a natural vivarium. Still a dream of mine one day but the orchids kind of enchanted me and I ended up an orchid grower instead of a frog father. Funny how these little plants creep into our lives! I was only patient when fishing before and the orchids have helled make me a more patient person in general. The awesome thing about the tank full of mini's is that they are virtually always in bloom. So when the impatience kicks in with the tent.... there is always the tank to stare at! Wow it's amazing that your orchids are so happy in this setup. I created one VERY similar to this (with sophronitis and angraecum inside) but they're not very happy (I have humidity maintained at 80% and i water every morning with a mister). Do you think I may be watering them too much? May I ask what humidity level you keep your tank? and how frequently you mist your orchids? Thank you so much! I'm in the process of building another smaller one!
@CloudforestVibesOrchidsMore3 жыл бұрын
Hard to advise on your plants without knowing more specifics but I keep my tank humidity between 89-91%, mostly for the Pleurothallids. My tent is between 80-86% with a slight decrease in the winter time. My watering schedule depends greatly on temps and time of year. In the tank it’s usually about every 3 days, give or take. Tent is similar but greatly depends on time of year, due to the amount of resting types. I know a lot of Angraecum types need a drier rest in the winter and Sophronitis should always dry out a little between waterings. They shouldn’t mind around 80-85% humidity, provided there is lots of air flow and they get their proper drying cycles when required. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching and happy growing! 😊

Hi Bobby... great video 😊. You have such a lovely setup with some really interesting and unusual plants 😊. Do you have a Masdevallia nidifica in your collection please? I've recently purchased a yellow one as I thought I'd try a miniature as I'm running out of space for larger orchids now but oh my, is it teeny tiny and smaller than I was expecting lol. Its in bloom and also has several buds yet to come but it looks so fragile it scares me lol. The blooms are the size of a match head.. Possibly a bit smaller! If you have any tips for growing this one I would be very grateful. Its in a 2 inch pot and looks to be potted in fine bark at the moment. I'm wondering if these spread out alot or stay very compact. Would be great to hear if you've experience of growing this but even if not, I'm sure you can give me some tips on how not to kill it lol. Many thanks and happy growing 😊.
@CloudforestVibesOrchidsMore4 жыл бұрын
Hey Maxine! Thank you so much for your kind words! I am happy you like my little tank full of weirdos... :) I do not have nidifica in my collection but it is one that is on my list. I don't know much about it other than what I've read on orchid species and travaldo's blog. I have heard it is a rather warmth tolerant Masdevallia and it's elevation range in the wild hints towards that as well. Typically when I have a plant like this, I lean towards intermediate temps and see which extreme season (summer or winter) they end up leaning towards. The biggest thing I have learned about masdies is that their roots LOVE lots of air. It is a difficult balance depending on your growing conditions but if you can give them a little extra humidity, they will greatly appreciate it. I grow most of mine mounted at the moment but I have a few in baskets with large bark/charcoal/sphagnum moss and they really seem to appreciate it. I do carry around 80-90% humidity in both setups but I still think that mix is the best based on Lynn's recommendation and my experience with it so far. As far as their growth habit, I am truly unsure. I am sure over time they will spread a bit but I do believe it stays rather small. The pictures I have see online tend to show a pretty tightly clustered plant, even in situ, but you never know with some orchids! I hope this helps, sorry I don't have more info! Please let me know how this one does, I look forward to a success story! Many thanks for watching! Stay safe and happy growing!!

@@CloudforestVibesOrchidsMore Awwww thank you so much Bobby. You've given me loads of info there and it's really appreciated 😊. The nidifica is really quite cute and the blooms are pretty but a magnifying glass is definitely required lol. It would look fantastic on a mount I think so maybe I'll be brave and give it a go if it shows signs it's not liking its feet in a pot lol. I also have a Masdevallia barlaeana that hasn't done great for me but I have repotted recently in a more airy mix so I think you're right about that being very important. It was previously in a fine bark mix and nothing else and the roots have just not grown... Now I know why lol. Hopefully I'll be able to keep both of them alive and give you a success story 😊. Keep up the great work with your fantastic "tank of weirdos" 🤣 lol and thank you so much for your help 😊. Stay safe and happy growing 😊.

Hi Bobby, I had a few questions I am setting up a 40gallon breeder tank. (Slightly smaller than your tank. Do I need to purchase 2 fan speed controllers? Did you need to purchase extra extension cables for all your fans? How thick are the polycarbonate sheets you are using? I hope I’m not asking too much lol Your setup is great, I just couldn’t go the extra 12” tall for space reasons. Thanks again for the videos, info, and entertainment. 🙂
@CloudforestVibesOrchidsMore3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Happy to hear you’re taking the dive!! So, with this setup I did opt for the fan speed controllers for the muffin fans. I was disappointed at how short the stock leads from the fan were and the controllers helped me extend them an extra few feet and make my setup functional. It would be possible to extend them further but I did not have to for my tank because I’m right next to my power source. I believe the lexan poly I am using is 3/16” thick. It was the thicker of the 2 options they had at Home Depot. I will warn you. It is a pain in the ass to cut with the little scoring tool and it’s a pain in the ass to drill. Whatever you do, take your time or it gets costly damaging it and replacing it. I bought an oscillating tool to cut it with eventually because scoring it and snapping it was difficult without damaging it or yourself. And any hole you drill, start small and gage it up from there. For large holes, you’ll want to use a diamond hole saw or a dremmel and a lot of patience! Working with and on the poly sheeting was the most difficult part of the build but once you get it down, you’ll be happy with the results! Good luck and please feel free to reach out if you have any more questions! Thanks again for watching and happy growing!

@@CloudforestVibesOrchidsMore Thank you for the info. I was thinking I would try and see if I can pay someone for cutting the lexan. I’m in a big city and there are tons of places that offer cutting and or drilling etc. I don’t want to waste a sheet it isn’t cheap.

Neat setup. Question: how much colling do you get with your fooger combined with fan and inkbird controllers? Thanks
@CloudforestVibesOrchidsMore3 жыл бұрын
So, the humidifier definitely has a cooling effect but I also grow in the home, so not sure what it would do under full sun. However it definitely cools down the tank several degrees when it kicks on a d cycles. If my tank is around 78F when it kicks on, it will take it down to around 76F in about 2 minutes, with the fans circulating the mist. The inkbird controllers don’t provide a “cooling function” for my tank as much as they draw in fresh air from the house, (which is usually cooler by default, therefore they cool). The most dramatic cooling for the tank comes from the AC in the house running, usually, or when I open the window on cool evenings and mornings. Thankfully I don’t live in Florida-like heat or my little system may not work the way it does. Thank you so much for watching! Happy growing!
@aliceswonderland75033 жыл бұрын
@@CloudforestVibesOrchidsMore Nice. That's what I thought, the system you have may cool a bit but depends on the temperature you have in the house. I have a terrarium a bit smaller than yours, I also use inkbird controllers. I just ordered a peltier module that I'm going to use to try cool the terrarium during the night cycle a few degrees. Check it, may worth a few trials.

One question (maybe you get it earlyer too): Is it a good idea if I superglue an orcid (a simple specie) on it's roots for a larger woodlog???
@CloudforestVibesOrchidsMore3 жыл бұрын
So, I have seen people do this before but it is not something I would do personally. I think it’s risky and depending on the type of orchid. It may really reject it. My worry is coating the roots and preventing the plant from being able to take in water to hydrate the plant. I believe Brad’s greenhouse did that before with an epiphyte branch he was making but I have no idea how his plants did long term. Good luck and thank you so much for watching!

I’ve had a Brassavolla nodosa 18 months and it’s thrown out a few leaves and shoots but nothing more 😏. I seem to have improved its conditions by moving it to a different setup so hoping 🤞🏼. Any personal knowledge of this orchid would be welcomed?! 😊
@CloudforestVibesOrchidsMore3 жыл бұрын
So, I have never grown nodosa but I grow 2 other species and I have struggled with them. I do know they like to be dry far more than moist for me and they like the brightest light I can give them. I feed mind around 150 ppm MSU every 2nd or 3rd watering and kelp/calmag at about the same interval at around 40-60 ppm. I wouldn’t dare try growing mine in a tank in my environment, as it stays far too moist for their roots to stay happy long term. I wish you the best of luck, I wish I knew more about nodosa but that’s about everything I know about general Brassavola care. I hope you have good success! Thank you so much for watching! Happy growing!

This is amazing ! Im recreating something similar in a curio display, and I was wondering if you ever have to mist your orchids or they live out only of the fog/humidity from the fogger ? im trying to add lots of different orchid by getting a pack from Etsy , and just mounting them on branches and driftwood inside, but i started getting worried that the fogger wont be enough to get them going , Ive actually got already the circulating fans for temperature and the ones for the fogger, the lights, and a water box for autorefill for the fogger but i was wondering about if the fogger will be enough.Really nice setup, really looking forward for a update of this video

Thanks for your kind words and for watching!! I do still water the orchids just like you would in a greenhouse. The humidity helps but it’s not enough to sustain most plants long term. I water about 1-3 times a week depending on season and temps. Good luck with your setup! I hope it goes well. The tank life is such a great way to grow the minis. Happy growing!

What temperature and humidity levels do you keep your orchidarium set up at?
@CloudforestVibesOrchidsMore3 жыл бұрын
I keep true intermediate temps but they vary a bit with the seasons. I grow between 60F and 72F in the cooler months and between 67-78F in the warmer months. Humidity levels are maintained year round between 89-91%. I have lots of air circulation to prevent the high moisture levels from causing issues and the plants (most of them) seem to appreciate it as well. Thanks for watching, happy growing!!

@@CloudforestVibesOrchidsMore I really appreciate your response. I hope to build an Orchidarium setup like yours for my next project. I was wondering what are specifically your favourite miniature orchids? Asking for when its time for me to choose what I want to add in my Orchidarium. Happy holidays my friend.
