I have ran lots of flux core. 5/64 wire. It does get very hot. I have actually a time or two melted the the tip and nozzle off the welder. It was dual shield flux core so as soon as the nozzle melts you lose the C02 shielding gas and get porosity in the weld. Fun times

Overall I ditched all my pipeliners completely and I am now using my cheap $12 plastics hoods only. They are lighter, more compact, cheaper, have a better flip front, flexible, and have a better system to swap out lenses so they beat the Sellstrom on a pipeliner in every category that matters to me.

I saw those hoods on Facebook being advertised but already had a pipeliner in perfectly good shape. So since I can't leave anything alone... I decided to use an old leather welding sleeve I had and cut out a piece just for the top of the pipeliner... I was worried that the bottom leather wouldn't hold up and it looks like I thought right... Boy that really stinks. I would recommend a half chopped setup with just the top cut like I have. Super lightweight and still durable on the bottom

thanks for sharing your opinion! Not sure if you've tried this but You may be able to reset the leather by soaking it (as needed) with water. Then as it slowly air dries, hang the hood in a proper stance, re-position the leather, and apply a bit of leather protection so the hide doesn't crack when completely dry. I've had success re-shaping leather that way :)

The leather is SUPER easy to replace. Order some leather on etsy, and buy some Chicago style fasteners for leather off amazon. The fasteners screw together, and are easily replaceable. I ordered high quality ostritch leather off etsy, and made my own helmet, WAY nicer than that outlaw. Lmao but i love leather work, i made a full leather hoodie with built in gauntlet 5mm thick. I stitched it together with Kevlar thread. All the boys at work try to get me to make one for them.

There are a couple tricks to keep your bottom leather from curling up. Clean your hood. I wipe mine down daily or as needed with spray furniture polish to included the leather. Keep it conditioned with mink oil (maybe once a week). Occasionally or as needed, clean the leather with saddle soap. Another tip to keep your bottom leather from curling up is, stop setting the hood down so that it pushed the leather up. Every time you set the hood down in a way that the leather is pushed up, you are training the leather to curl up. I almost always hang my hood on a hook on my bottle topper or on a hook on the side of my fab cart. A welding hood is an investment, take care of it. I have been running cut down hoods, mostly pipeliners, for quite a while

You are thinking of the Tiger hood flip thats the wrong shield bud. This is a Shellstrom flip and they have a steel retainer not plastic and it also can only be slid out the side slot not popped out the back and to even remove it all the lenses have to be pulled out and also it can only be installed before lenses.

I had the fiber metal quick connect hard hat adapters on shield so there was no way to hang it up. Had no choice but to set it down. If they used a lower more flexible grade of leather for the bottom it wouldn’t have been a problem but since they use the higher grade stiffer leather it warps. Bottom line is back the outlaw was mostly making their shields for looks and not performance. So many people had this problem with the leather warping that outlaw had to offer a warranty program where they will replace or restore the bottom leather if you ship in your shield.

We use pieces from cheap welding jackets for the leather and just zip cut the shield and drill the holes with a pencil grinder then zip tie it all together lol its pretty crude the way we do it but it works in a pinch. Im sure if you put some time and money into it you would have something very nice like you built.

Hey JTwelder, I am a member of the Boiler Makers local 128. I Just finushed my last term of school for pressure system welder. This is a great video because i was looking at these shields for a while wanting one cause of all the same reasons you stated. But i didnt want to spend the $$ on it. So i just altered that cheap $15 flip front you have. To be similar to the outlaw leather. Leather on the top shield and neck bib protection. I had a similar thing happen. I was working up in Sault ste. marie on a tank job and it was pretty cold. needless to say the leather warped pretty good where the neck protection was and defeated the purpose of the shield. I am not a fan of those tiger hoods to big and bulky and always falling down in front of your face. 1. So what i did was i bought a similar flip front to that one in the video(cheaper flip front). But the hinges for the flip front on this one were plastic and you can take them out easily(sweetness). I removed one of the springs so you can flip the flip front down with a simple nod. (Right on!) similar to this video. 2. Then cut the top off. Plastic part on the top of the shield and riveted leather similar to what the top of the outlaw leather looks like. That part was always pretty good. So it can fit the contour of the hard hat and when your welding 7010 it stops you from wearing the sparks on the money maker lol. 3. I bought a Lincoln Viking shield a while back because well I was a newb. They are more for a shop setting. You dont use them on site cause they will get jacked or broken. But the useful thing about that is it came with a hard hat adapter. It is the best hard hat adapter i have used to date. So I attached that hard hat adapter to the flip front and Bam!!! Works good. You can buy those hard hat adapters seperetely. I recommend trying something similar Bro. Also another point you made in the video. I definetely recommend you to get the flip front pocket hood from outlaw leather. we were doing return bends in school and my buddy was using one and he said he fogged up a little bit. But it was great for the tight spots. So I got one to haha to be honest havn't used it yet but i am sure it will come in handy. Gets rid of all the back light as well, fits like a pancake hood. Anyways cheers man thanks for your content and the pros and cons of the shield. Who knows might work with you on a job some day haha.

A Man a Dog and a Van I could do that but would want the leather to still be very flexible so that the shield could fit in many tight spots that other shields wouldn’t. Now if I welded on pipe or the pipeline I would 100% do that I love that idea for that application! Leather working sounds pretty interesting I would love to get into that as a hobby.

@@JTwelder. I got into Leatherworking was a result of my two trades.. I kept ruining my pants in Sheet Metal so I fabbed up an apron. The rest was history. I am thinking of making a welding jacket and neck protector. It will give you Killer Layout and Mad Pattern Skills..

It looks like the leather dried out. Something you could try and do is use a leather treatment like obenaufs to get moisture back into the leather.

Just buy the fibre metal Futura that already has a flip front on it and it's better then a tiger hood in my opinion. I'm not a huge fan of the selstrom flip front. Or a jackson wh10 with the flip front but the jackson hard hat adapters suck but they have awesome soft band. I'm also a boilermaker. Local 13💪

@@JTwelder. Ok good to know, thanks man. I've applied to a few unions, like 67 and 48, do you have to have a pressure ticket or do they train as well? I know some tests to get in is a 6010 r / 7018 all position plate test. Does 128 have a 6g tig or what is it?

You have to take care of of the leather. You running flux core the arc flash is drying the leather out. I wash the leather with soap and water. Then drape it on a round surface so it will dry with shape. Once it’s dry, condition the leather with mink oil.
